Chapter 38: Chapter 15: Congratulations, Original Toast_2
This night, Du Xixi went to sleep very early, while Ke Lian had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night to take a cold shower. When he didn’t know for the umpteenth time the chill of the cold water as he walked out of the bathroom, Du Xixi turned over in her sleep, and most of the thin quilt smoothly fell to the ground.
Ke Lian chuckled and helped her cover up the quilt that had fallen on the ground, then squatted by her bed, reaching out to gently touch her peaceful and innocent sleeping face.
Du Xixi seemed to be having a pleasant dream, for a sweet smile lingered on her lips in reality, making Ke Lian involuntarily smile as well.
Ke Lian watched her for a long time, until the sky gradually began to brighten. He kissed Du Xixi’s forehead, got up to draw the curtains together, then carefully lay beside Du Xixi, holding her in his arms.
Despite going to bed very late, Ke Lian fell asleep quickly because what he embraced was his wife and their future child yet to be born. This was everything he treasured.

Du Xixi rarely woke up earlier than Ke Lian, and judging from Ke Lian’s state, he seemed to be deeply asleep; even when Du Xixi got dressed and went out, Ke Lian didn’t wake up.
Ke Xing would return tomorrow, and Mo Ying had also returned to the Mo Family. After saying good morning to 2569, who slid over, Du Xixi habitually entered the kitchen.
Mo Ying and Ke Xing felt that having Du Xixi be responsible for three meals a day was too taxing for her; in fact, Du Xixi thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of immersing herself in the kitchen.
As a cook, it made her feel grounded, and those feelings of anxiety and rootlessness would disappear completely in the kitchen.
Ke Lian had returned, and even Chen Yin had Rob deliver a lot of ingredients. Du Xixi planned to make some delicious meals for Ke Lian. The first would start with today’s breakfast.
In Western breakfasts, toast is undoubtedly a frequent guest. Du Xixi also liked this convenient and tasty breakfast bread. Seeing several bags of yeast among the ingredients, she decided to make toast for Ke Lian.
Du Xixi took out a suitable bowl and poured in an appropriate amount of flour, salt, sugar that had been made into granulated sugar, eggs, and plenty of clean water. After washing her hands, she began to knead the dough.
Although kneading dough is physically demanding, it also requires some skill; Du Xixi didn’t want 2569 to waste energy and not succeed in kneading the dough.
In about a quarter of an hour, the dough was already formed under Du Xixi’s hands. Du Xixi then scooped in a spoonful of butter softened to room temperature and continued mixing.
This was much more laborious; after exerting herself, Du Xixi considered her body and stepped back, letting 2569 knead the dough slowly under her supervision. When the dough could be stretched to form a membrane without breaking, it was considered successful.
Du Xixi divided the dough into three parts, covering them to let them relax for twenty minutes, when she saw the originally fast-asleep Ke Lian walk into the kitchen, his eyes dazed and still somewhat sleepy.
Ke Lian had changed into casual home clothes, looking a little more relaxed, and appeared very gentle. When he saw Du Xixi, he smiled and walked over, pulling her into his arms: "Why are you busy in the kitchen again? Don’t tire yourself out."
Ke Lian knew Du Xixi loved to cook delicious food, so his first reaction wasn’t to stop her from going into the kitchen but to express real concern that she shouldn’t overexert herself.
After last night, the affection between Du Xixi and Ke Lian progressed rapidly. It was like turning from ordinary friends into a couple in the throes of young love, eager to be glued to each other at all times.
Du Xixi rubbed against his shoulder, a bit coquettishly said, "Don’t worry, 2569 is with me!"
"Oh?" Ke Lian squinted slightly, looking her in the eye, "With 2569 around, you don’t need me?"
"How could that be! You’re the most important!" Du Xixi quickly soothed Ke Lian. Seeing Ke Lian smile again, she breathed a sigh of relief while snuggling closer to Ke Lian, oblivious to everything else.
2569: ...It’s one thing to be so openly affectionate, but why continue after brushing me aside...
The toast still needed to be made, so Du Xixi asked Ke Lian to go out and rest a bit longer. Once he obediently left, she rolled out the three small dough pieces into long oval shapes, then rolled them into three small rolls and placed them side by side in a special toast mold.
Next was fermentation. When they were fermented to fill eight or nine-tenths of the toast mold, Du Xixi had 2569 put the rather heavy toast mold into the oven, setting it to the appropriate temperature and time to bake the toast.
