Qin Zhiyou quickly turned his face away; he didn’t want Lu Weixi to see him in such an embarrassing state. Since the day he was born, the only time he had ever shed tears was when his father died. He had never cried otherwise, no matter the circumstances. Growing up in a household with discordant parents, an early loss of his father, and surrounded by a pack of wolves ready to pounce, he had long mastered the art of smiling—a sneer, a fake smile, a smug grin, a sinister smirk, a reckless laugh. The one thing he hadn’t learned was how to cry.

Even when Lu Weixi was in danger, teetering on the edge of life and death, he didn’t cry. But for some reason, the moment her eyes opened and she looked at him, tears suddenly fell from his eyes.

Lu Weixi’s throat was hoarse—not only from going three days without drinking water but also because she was physically weak after giving birth. She couldn’t speak, but her eyes stayed fixed on him, gazing at the back of his head, just like that.

Qin Zhiyou turned his head for a long time, forcing the tears to retreat, letting the ones on his face dry in the wind. Only then did he lightly sniff his nose and turn back to her.

When he turned back, his gaze happened to meet Lu Weixi’s eyes.

She simply stared at him, silently holding his gaze. Her eyes lingered on his for a while before they began moving slowly—taking in his dust-covered appearance, the injury at the corner of his lips, and the bluish stubble on his chin.

As her gaze wandered, Qin Zhiyou naturally felt it too. He followed her line of sight and looked down at himself, only then realizing he was covered in dirt, absolutely filthy. His clothes were torn, and there were bloodstains on him as well. He was more disheveled than he had ever been in his life. Even though Lu Weixi hadn’t seen him crying earlier, he still felt ridiculous.

He withdrew his dirty hand and wiped it on his own clothes before speaking, "Are you thirsty? I’ll go buy you some water."

Lu Weixi lightly nodded her head.

He immediately got up, ready to leave, but then turned back to her. "Our son was born. He’s in the nursery right now. When you’re better, I’ll bring him to you."

Lu Weixi’s eyes gleamed a little brighter. Her lips moved, hinting that she wanted to see him. However, she also understood Qin Zhiyou’s reasoning. If it were possible, he would have definitely brought the baby to her already. The fact that he hadn’t meant there was a reason—a premature birth, or perhaps some injury she had sustained that had affected the baby’s health.

Her gaze flickered, and in the end, she nodded again. Then, with a touch of frailty, she managed to utter one word: "Hungry."

"Okay. I’ll get you something. Let’s eat together."

Every time Qin Zhiyou spoke, she nodded in response. He picked up his phone, originally intending to order delivery, only to find his phone battery drained. Without a charger on hand, he placed the phone aside, pulled a few hundred-yuan bills from his wallet, left the wallet by the table, and pushed the door open to leave. Outside, the plainclothes officers were still standing guard. The moment Qin Zhiyou stepped out, the two men approached him. "Is Miss Lu in a suitable state to provide a statement now?"

Qin Zhiyou hesitated for a moment. He turned back and pushed the door open again. Inside, Lu Weixi had already overheard the conversation and softly replied, "I can do it."

Qin Zhiyou didn’t ask further questions. He turned back toward the two officers and nodded at them. During the time he went out to buy water and food, having those two keep an eye on things made him feel more reassured.

"She just woke up. If there are any things she doesn’t remember clearly... please don’t press for details."
