Chapter 866: Hospitalization

Chapter 866: Chapter 866: Hospitalization

The faint light penetrates the darkness, struggling to squeeze through the dark clouds, and falls exhausted to the ground.

It’s almost noon now, yet the sky remains gloomy and sinister, with the entire city exuding unease everywhere.

"Teacher Gao, I still don’t quite agree with your decision. If you regret it now, there’s still time." Yan Lan and Wang Chuqing followed behind the children of Class 7. They thought Han Fei’s idea of taking Class 7 out for trials was too crazy, knowing this involved a face-to-face battle with Hatred. The adults simply didn’t have the energy to protect those children.

"Why don’t you come along too?" After obtaining consent from Number Two, Han Fei decided to bring the school teachers along.

The gates at several checkpoints of the Investigation Bureau slowly opened, and modified vehicles sped out, with three black heavy-duty trucks at the end of the convoy.

Two of them were driven by logistics personnel, loaded with various supplies. The students of Class 7 and two patients that Han Fei had rescued from the Mental Hospital were sitting in the third vehicle.

Han Fei was the person in charge of Class 7. He had taught a class with a 100% Personality Awakening rate. The Investigation Bureau wanted to find out how he achieved this, so even though some felt Han Fei’s actions were irrational, ultimately no one stopped him.

Come to think of it, in this great disaster, no Special Personality Awakened individual was cultivated in a comfort zone. Even the best Talent requires life-and-death struggles to be triggered.

The convoy sped along the highway, and by the time the Investigation Bureau’s people reached the third Mental Hospital, it was also the brightest time of the day.

"The Ghost Creature seems to have spread again."

Compared to the last time Han Fei was here, two more buildings had been added to the Mental Hospital, looking seamlessly integrated, as if they had always been there.

"The third Mental Hospital is one of the most famous Black Buildings. We’ve been investigating it for several years and have paid a great price to explore it clearly. We’ve been preparing for this day since then." The Top Student began having group members transport equipment. Temporarily without tasks himself, he found Han Fei and prepared to mount some protective facilities near the Class 7 students: "Once we launch the attack, we might not be able to take care of these kids, so you’d better let them watch from a further distance."

"Alright." All the combat teams were making final preparations. Han Fei drove the heavy-duty truck to take the students to a location near a certain building designated by Number Two.

It was a children’s clothing store located a few hundred meters away from the Mental Hospital, facing the back door of the Mental Hospital.

"Leave the task of killing Hatred to others. Once you enter, your primary objective is to find that jar." Number Two looked at the Mental Hospital with a somewhat terrifying expression: "The contents of that jar are extremely important to me. Once we have it, it can change our current passive situation."

"Rest assured." Han Fei, possessing the talent for Hide-and-Seek and an incredibly high Luck Value, found locating things not difficult.

Still not quite at ease, Number Two cut his own hand, smeared a drop of blood on white paper, and then drew numerous strange symbols on it before folding it into a paper airplane: "When you lose your way, this thing will help you walk out of fate’s maze."

As Han Fei touched the paper airplane, a system prompt appeared in his mind.

"Player numbered 0000, please note! You have obtained a task item - Guide of Destiny. Carrying this item will give you a probability of obtaining a D-level Curse Item."

"Player numbered 0000, please note! You have obtained the Shrine Hidden Quest - Brain-in-jar."

"Brain-in-jar (Hidden Quest): Perhaps the world we see is just a dream reconstructed from countless memories. Each of us lives in a jar. This is your closest chance to the truth. I hope you seize this opportunity."

"Task Requirement: Find Number Two’s Brain Fragment in the Shrine Memory World."

In the worst future, it seemed Number Two hadn’t completely died, but his brain fell into the hands of Gao Xing.

The explosive roar interrupted Han Fei’s thoughts. He looked towards the Mental Hospital, where the other buildings around the Black Building had been razed to the ground, with only the buildings covered by the Ghost Creature remaining intact.

"All combat teams take their designated positions!"

"Investigation Group Two in position!"

"Patrol Group One in position!"

"Logistics Group in position!"

Responses from various groups echoed from the Black Ring, and Han Fei hurried to meet up with the Top Student.

He was critically wounded in previous missions, so this time the Investigation Bureau didn’t assign him overly difficult tasks, merely instructing him to act with ten Top Students to secure the safety of the equipment.

Once all the groups were in position, the command vehicle in the center of the battlefield slowly turned around.

The door opened, and a kind middle-aged woman and a frail young man exited the vehicle.

The middle-aged woman was the Deputy Captain of the Logistics Squadron, with a Gratitude Personality that had awoken eight times. She had done countless good deeds in her life, was thankful for everything around her, and after the great disaster, her soul was filled with gratitude, attracting countless dead souls to repay her kindness.

The more people she saved, the more gratitude she received, and the stronger her personality became.

Over the ten years of the great disaster, she had performed countless good deeds until her eighth personality awakening not long ago.

The other young man, with arms full of needle marks and faint wrinkles visible on his face, appeared in his twenties on the surface, but his actual age was a mystery. Some said he had lived for a century, while others said he wasn’t truly old, just that biological experiments had ruined his body.

This young man was named Fu Lie. He had worked at Eternal Life Pharmaceutical, but was framed and forced to participate in multiple human trials. The long string of numbers engraved on his chest was his identification number.

Before the great disaster, he had been confined deep within the laboratory, but when disaster struck, he luckily escaped.

Possessing the Revenge Personality, his heart was filled with infinite anger and hatred. He was the Deputy Captain of the Investigation Squadron and one of the most formidable individuals within the Investigation Bureau. The Investigation Bureau did not record detailed information about him. Members of the investigation team only knew that Fu Lie was undefeated in every battle since his escape.

"Prepare to enter the Ghost Creature!"

The chief commander gave the order, and the kind middle-aged woman walked alone towards the main gate of the Mental Hospital. She appeared quite ordinary, but her internal strength exceeded that of most people.

Her rough, scarred hands slowly clasped together as she slightly bowed her head, chanting a song completely incomprehensible to ordinary people.

One by one, the scales surrounded her like elves, while the ocean-like power from deep within her heart poured out.

In stark contrast to the haunted realm filled with dark energy and death intent, that force was pure and clean, filled with benevolence.

"After opening this door, we shall form a bond here."

The sound of shattering reached the ears of every member of the Investigation Bureau, and a crack appeared in the once-complete haunted realm, as if a beam of light had pierced a perpetually dark room, causing the ugly souls within to feel pain and fear.

The ghosts and monsters near the main door scattered and fled. The middle-aged woman did not chase after them; she stood at the main door, opening the entrance to the haunted realm for everyone, constantly burning herself to provide light and guide others forward.

"Action!"

Fu Lie nodded at the middle-aged woman, walked past her, and the combat team from the Investigation Bureau, who had entered predetermined positions earlier, followed closely behind.

The darkness engulfed one Investigation Bureau member after another, yet not one of them retreated.

"Our turn." The top student hoisted a box containing equipment onto his shoulder and waved to Han Fei. They, along with the logistics team, approached the middle-aged woman.

At close range, Han Fei felt a warmth emanating from the middle-aged woman, as if some negative emotions in his brain sea had been dispelled.

"Stay safe, you still have so many children to look after." As Han Fei passed by, the middle-aged woman suddenly spoke, giving him a kind smile.

"Attention, Player No. 0000! You have received a blessing—Ping’an (Safe Passage)."

"Ping’an (Blessing): Physical strength increased by one point, fortune improves."

Han Fei hadn’t expected a system prompt; he thanked the woman, then followed the top student into the haunted realm.

With one step forward, it felt like crossing from late autumn into the depths of winter, even his breath carried a slight chill.

The previous few groups had just entered less than half a minute ago, yet Han Fei could no longer see their figures. This was one of the capabilities of the mental hospital’s haunted realm; it would randomly scramble and send people into different areas.

However, the Investigation Bureau was prepared; the logistics team deputy captain’s ability could counter the haunted realm, and everyone also wore the same curse item, so unless their luck was very bad, they wouldn’t get separated.

"Is it just me being targeted? Or has something unexpected happened to everyone?"

Han Fei was alone with no one around, he could see the middle-aged woman’s presence when he turned back, but the more he walked toward her, the farther away he felt.

"No matter which direction one walks, it will lead closer to the main building, this haunted realm is quite high-level."

The middle-aged woman’s singing gradually faded, leaving only deathly silence in his ears.

The sprawling complex seemed like a monster standing in the deep night; the sense of oppression was indescribable. Just staring at it for too long felt maddening.

"I haven’t heard the sound of combat, it seems completely isolated in a separate area. This hatred truly understands human nature, using various hints to directly evoke inner fears."

No retreat, no rescue, alone against unknown ghosts and monsters, every step forward was a massive torment and test.

"Ah!"

A scream suddenly echoed not far from Han Fei, seemingly from a member of the tenth group, who had spoken with Han Fei just minutes before.

Opening the main building’s door, Han Fei sprinted toward the direction of the scream. At the hallway’s corner, a young man was nailed to a cross, blood flowing continuously from his body.

"Hold on!"

Han Fei freed the young man, opened the emergency kit issued by the Investigation Bureau to each member, and skillfully helped bandage his wounds: "I remember your name is Zheng Li, right? Who attacked you? Is that thing still nearby?"

"It’s the priest, he’s the shadow of my life, he’s back! He’s in this building too..."

"Priest?"

"When I was very young, there was a cultured priest living in the apartment building. The adults were too busy with work and would sometimes ask the priest for help in looking after us, but I discovered the priest’s secret. He liked to collect children’s blood and skin fragments, and he would use those to paint." Zheng Li’s voice trembled. "He threatened me, saying if I told the adults, he’d find ways to kill me, and said I was just a kid, and no one would believe what a child says..."

"Did you report it to the police?"

"The priest detained me until late, destroyed all evidence, and disappeared. I thought I could escape this nightmare, but every time I was home alone, the phone would ring, and the priest’s voice would come through, saying he was watching me from the window, and that he was just outside the door..." Before Zheng Li finished speaking, that old-fashioned telephone ring-tone suddenly sounded: "It’s here! It’s here again!"

Zheng Li’s face turned pale as she curled into a corner.

These Investigation Bureau members were battle-hardened, ordinary fear wouldn’t bring such an effect; only the deepest nightmares in one’s heart could break down their psychological defenses.

Carrying Zheng Li, Han Fei ignored her vehement protests, ran towards the direction from where the phone ring-tone originated.

Kicking open the ward door, the inside was not a simple ward but a girl’s bedroom.

It was evident her parents loved her; the room was arranged very warmly, but in Zheng Li’s eyes, this room seemed like a nightmare she could not escape.

Answering the phone, Han Fei heard a strange man’s voice, "I’ve been watching you, watching you!"

"Want to come out and meet?" Han Fei infused greed black fog into the receiver, the voice turned hoarse and blurry, gradually disappearing. Then he summoned Impermanence, intending to have it crawl into the phone and follow the line to kill the ghost, but it seemed Impermanence couldn’t do it.

Frowning slightly, Han Fei then summoned Executioner, two large-scaled grudges stood on either side, but to Han Fei’s surprise, even this couldn’t dispel the illusion realm, and the room before him still appeared as Zheng Li’s most loathed scene.

"The Director seems to be using our individual fears, this hatred indeed is somewhat unusual."
