Chapter 857: Chapter 857 The First Step of God Stealing
After Li Xue left, only Han Fei remained in the meeting room, sitting alone by the table.
"Kuangxiao paid such a huge price to bring us into the Shrine just to steal the divine position! Taking advantage of Gao Xing’s havoc in the real world, he occupies his Shrine, cutting off his retreat!"
Li Xue’s suggestion greatly inspired Han Fei; he wanted to usurp the divine position together with Gao Cheng.
"Gao Cheng’s wish is the core task of the Shrine. Three choices represent three different fates: devour, coexist, and destroy. After I make a choice, the Shrine Memory World may undergo some changes, and the alienation should deepen continuously."
Han Fei didn’t know when Gao Xing’s true form would return, so he had to seize the time.
Propping himself up on the table to stand, as Han Fei stepped out of the meeting room, he saw Number Seven holding a form waiting for him: "Is there something you need?"
"This time you discovered a loophole in Hope New City alone, killed eleven followers of the Evil God, and saved two members of the New City Law Enforcement Team, accumulating a total of thirty-five thousand contribution points." Number Seven handed the form to Han Fei, "The evidence department just received a Heart of Grudge. The director especially asked me to reserve it for you. It only costs ten thousand contribution points. Do you want me to buy it for you?"
The ordinary Ghost Blood removes mental pollution rather slowly. Han Fei also knew his situation, hesitating slightly: "Alright, bring it."
With a Greed Personality, he disliked rejecting others’ goodwill.
"Spending ten thousand, you now owe seventeen thousand five hundred contribution points." Number Seven couldn’t help but sigh, "At your current rate, I estimate that the investigation bureau’s warehouse will soon be emptied by you."
"We’re all colleagues; why care so much?"
"Even though we are colleagues, I feel like I’m working for you." Number Seven touched the Black Ring, "I came here for another matter. Acting Principal Yan Lan wants to reorganize the school. Will you choose to continue with Investigation Team Thirteen, or return to teaching and educating?"
"This place is obviously more suitable for me."
"Since you plan to stay with the investigation team long-term, I suggest you select some promising juniors to train, as there are many things that will be inconvenient for just you in Team Thirteen."
"Understood." Han Fei always felt that Number Seven particularly took care of him. Team Three’s leader was quite unsociable because of his unique personality, but he mistakenly thought Han Fei was the same kind of person, so he always liked to chat and counsel Han Fei.
"I’ll deliver the Heart of Grudge to your ward. Looking forward to our next mission together." Number Seven smiled and left. The investigation team gained a particularly powerful new leader, which was good news for everyone.
After bidding farewell to Number Seven, Han Fei returned directly to the ward. He was really exhausted and fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. He slept very soundly that night.
Healing Starlight shone upon the Greed Abyss, and Han Fei seemed to have a dream. In the dream, he turned into the likeness of Gao Cheng, staying in a flower-filled room with a stranger woman.
The woman pointed at various flowers, sunlight sliding down her long hair, suffusing the room with fragrance.
In the dream, Han Fei seemed to truly smile.
"Hey, are you having a nightmare? Your face looks kind of sinister, pretty scary." A child’s innocent voice rang in his ears, and Han Fei sat up sharply from the bed. Looking to the side, Numbers Four, Five, and Two were sitting on the sofa in the ward, all staring at Han Fei.
"When did you come in?"
"Your vigilance is too poor. If I wanted to kill you, you might never open your eyes again." Number Four spoke sharply, but Han Fei knew he had a fierce tongue but a soft heart.
"Teacher Gao, we have finished resting and want to go out for a bit." Number Five took out a hand-drawn map. The marked location was very familiar to Han Fei; it was Ankang Pharmacy.
"What are you going there for?"
"Previously, under the pretext of treating you, we viewed some internal documents of the Disaster Investigation Bureau. We saw an altar deep within the evidence department." Number Five silently wrote a number on the map—"0".
"The aura emanating from that altar reminded me of someone, someone very special to us."
Han Fei knew who Number Five was talking about; the students must have sensed Kuangxiao’s aura on the altar preserved at the investigation bureau, and they wanted to find information related to Kuangxiao.
"You don’t want to stop us, do you?" Number Five looked very polite, always smiling, but with his Leader Personality, he was the hardest to read. Any born Manager first had to learn to manage their emotions, not letting people easily see their hand.
"Not only will I not stop you, but I will also fully support you." Han Fei stared at Number Five with great seriousness, "In this Shrine World, I will unconditionally protect you, trust you, because this is what he entrusted me, and I will deliver."
"I thought it would take a long time to persuade you, but... was guessed right by Number Two again." Number Five shrugged, "Sleep well, we’ll set out again after dark."
Number Five opened a black box on the nightstand in the ward, and the room’s temperature instantly dropped. Inside the box was a still-beating Heart of Grudge, "As thanks, we’ll help eradicate your mental pollution so you can recover quickly."
The ward door was pushed open, and several other children came in. Everyone gathered around the bed to help Han Fei ingest the Heart of Grudge.
What happened next would be enough to scare the investigation bureau’s doctors to death. A living person swallowing a Heart of Grudge; despite such calamity, never before had anyone seen someone so fierce.
"Don’t worry, if you’re scared, we can knock you out and give you full anesthesia." Number Four kindly raised his fist.
"Then I’ll just swallow it directly."
The students’ Personality Abilities were all activated, and Han Fei enjoyed the same treatment as Number One; his Luck Attribute was temporarily enhanced, his mental world became incredibly slow. The Heart of Grudge, like a bomb, was completely swallowed by him, all negative emotions suppressed firmly, and the purest obsession of Grudge absorbed the stains from his Brain Sea, transforming them into continuous Soul Power.
Only a very few grudges can give birth to a Heart of Grudge, and these grudges have the potential to transform into Hatred. However, now they have become Han Fei’s food.
Clearly feeling his body recovering, Han Fei let out a long breath: "It seems like both my personalities have been enhanced."
"For every ten Ghosts with a Heart of Grudge, one will break through to become Hatred. By that rate, you have almost consumed half of a Hatred."
The treatment completed, the students left at ease. They pretended not to care about Han Fei, but when something happened to him, all these children stood up to save him.
"Could it be that the children from the underground laboratory all have a tough personality?"
Han Fei lay on the bed, his consciousness sinking into the sea of his mind.
The boy representing Gao Cheng’s real memories sat at the edge of the abyss, bathed in starlight. The girl who ignited the hatred black fire stood in the midst of the abyss, curiously watching the boy. She too had stayed in the Deep Sea Aquarium for
a long time, and she was aware of how Gao Xing tortured the boy relentlessly.
"The abyss is much more lively than before, but it’s still not enough." Han Fei’s plan had already seen preliminary success; the Greed Personality and Healing Personality complemented each other’s flaws, allowing Han Fei to devour without limit. As long as he didn’t die, he would become increasingly terrifying.
Walking past the ghosts and monsters, Han Fei grabbed Brother Chou’s soul, pressing this perverse killer at the rim of the abyss: "Tell me how to use your personality, or I’ll make you regret being born into this world."
"Do you think I’m afraid of death?" Brother Chou laughed disdainfully: "Pain and despair only make me feel more comfortable."
"I just like your rebellious attitude, so make sure you hold onto it well." Han Fei kicked him into the Greed Abyss, having him bear the despair harbored in the black water instead of the boy: "Those torture methods were used by the divine spirits, and now I’m using them on you. You could say you’re a successful star chaser now, right?"
Ignoring Brother Chou, Han Fei sat down beside the boy, still recalling the dream he just had.
"Having a family... what kind of feeling is that?"
The two grown-up children sat under the starlight; they were each a blossom in the Twin Flowers.
A new day began. Han Fei came to the Investigation Bureau canteen, spending his contribution recklessly to have a hearty meal of meat: "Choosing to become the Midnight Butcher was indeed a wise decision. When mentally polluted and feeling bad, just eat some meat."
The piles of empty plates were taken away, and the Investigation Bureau members who wanted to greet Han Fei all stepped aside. Beasts are most likely to get angry while feeding, and Han Fei was a super "evil beast" who single-handedly took down eleven evil god followers.
"The people at the Disaster Investigation Bureau are so polite, even maintaining a safe distance while eating. I’m starting to like this place a bit."
Han Fei’s condition had improved significantly. He approached the top student, and together they entered the Investigation Bureau’s archive room to discuss the possibility of using the Possessive Personality to control the hatred of the eyes.
As evening fell, Han Fei, who gained considerable insights, left the archive room and entered the support area of the Investigation Bureau.
Though called support, it was actually where ordinary people lived. There were no idle members in the Investigation Bureau; everyone contributed to maintain this war machine’s operation.
Walking down the clean and tidy roads, Han Fei noticed the passersby looking at him with eyes full of respect. Members of the investigation squad seemed to have a high status within the Investigation Bureau.
Entering the newly built school, students were learning combat skills. To survive the great disaster, one needed to deal not only with ghosts and monsters but also be wary of living humans.
"You came too early; it’s not dark yet." Number Five saw Han Fei from afar, ran over, and whispered: "This time, let’s not alarm others. What we’re doing can’t see the light of day."
"Large numbers are easy to expose."
"Only number One, Two, Four, Thirty, and me. You should be able to take five people out, right?" Number Five glanced at Han Fei’s black ring: "You’ve made such great contributions recently, didn’t the director give you a promotion?"
"I’ll give it a try." Han Fei agreed on a location with them, then found the logistics staff, intending to retrieve that evil god follower’s car, as it was his trophy after all.
The logistics staff was a bit troubled. The black heavy truck was also considered evidence and couldn’t be casually driven out of the Investigation Bureau. In the end, after mutual negotiation, the logistics department equipped the thirteenth investigation team with a vehicle.
As night deepened, Han Fei accepted a task near Ankang Pharmacy, driving and taking five students away.
Along the way, they encountered inspection, but Number Two seemed to use his ability and smoothly passed through.
Midnight belonged to the ghosts and monsters. Han Fei had previously fought them during the day, so the fierce ghosts hadn’t fully exerted their strength.
"Are we being too conspicuous, driving in the city at night?" Han Fei himself wasn’t afraid, but he worried about the five students in the car.
The other four were fine, but Thirty was a very innocent little girl. She was the first to acknowledge Han Fei back then, but she seemed to lack any combat ability.
"Apart from those black buildings and a few structures, nothing in Zone C can threaten us." Number One spoke calmly: "As long as we don’t provoke the hatred, no ghost or monster can stop us."
"It seems you haven’t been idle these days. Your strength has increased significantly?" Han Fei put the pedal to the metal, speeding up.
"We’re just slowly reclaiming what was originally ours, but you’re the one who’s surprising." Number Two seemed to be in a good mood: "Number One has a Miracle Personality, and you’re a miracle yourself."
Being praised for the first time, Han Fei suddenly didn’t know how to respond and changed the topic: "There’s a Dark Merchant under Ankang Pharmacy, consistently offering sacrifices to the altar. Perhaps we could make it an ally."
"Even after the Unspeakable’s soul scattering, the Dark Merchant persistently sacrifices to the Faceless God Statue. Such a devout believer, the god should grant it eternal life." Number Two seemed to have it all planned out: "When we reach the underground, consume him, allowing him to be undying and unquenchable in the Greed Abyss."
"That’s... not very nice." Han Fei found the Dark Merchant quite endearing.
"Being devoured by you and becoming part of you is the only way to truly escape the Shrine World’s shackles. You’re saving him." Number Two smiled: "When the Old God falls, being devoured by the New God is an honor."
At midnight, Han Fei drove to Ankang Pharmacy, and with five children, pushed open the pharmacy door.
The Dark Merchant, sensing the scent of living humans from afar, quietly emerged, retrieving a rotten human head from under its black robe, tilted its head with a hand to assess the five students: "Gao Cheng, are these children the new sacrificial offerings?"
