Chapter 845: Chapter 845: It Turns Out He Sacrificed Himself
The piercing spotlight shone in front of Han Fei; if the night were a stage, then he was now the protagonist at the center of everyone’s gaze.
Many members who had been part of the investigation for a long time had never seen Li Xue, but this teacher was immediately summoned into the city by the director and the outpost even dispatched two full teams to cleanse Ghosts and Monsters for escort.
The survivors and outpost members around all looked at Han Fei; various signs indicated that this seemingly ordinary teacher might be hiding special secrets.
"Since you want to follow, then come along." The leading member of the Investigation Bureau raised his left arm, received a signal, and the spotlight illuminated the road leading into the outpost: "This way, please."
The Disaster Investigation Bureau team, armed and ready, stood on both sides, exuding an aura completely different from ordinary survivors. The strong smell of blood continually stimulated the senses, and each person’s gaze was as sharp as a dagger.
"Gate One, clear!"
Passing between two buildings, Han Fei, Yan Lan, and Wang Chuqing entered the Disaster Investigation Bureau together.
The gigantic outpost of over thirty thousand people was expanded and divided into twenty-four squads based on pre-disaster police categories to handle logistics support, internal security, criminal justice, city investigation, resident management, scientific research, emergency rescue, and more.
All the buildings within the outpost were pre-designed, with everyone performing their duties. The entire Investigation Bureau functioned like a high-speed war machine. Merely walking through it allowed one to feel the intangible pressure.
"Gate Two, clear!"
The black gate, made of special material, slowly opened. Two Investigation Bureau members who made Han Fei feel threatened stood beside him, one on each side.
Moving forward, the Investigation Bureau building stood at the center of the outpost, the tallest structure there.
As he climbed the stairs step by step, the Ghosts and Monsters hiding in the Greed Abyss began to stir restlessly, roaring incessantly.
Perhaps because the building’s inhabitants had killed too many Ghosts, this building actually instilled fear in them.
The pitch-black Ghost Blood seeped into the structure, the bone-chilling cold was trampled underfoot, and the names on the walls of the stairway included Zhao Ming’s friend - Zhang Xiaotian.
The sound of chains clashing with the sturdy ground echoed, with some rooms imprisoning members severely polluted mentally. They voluntarily allowed themselves to be trapped, becoming samples for the Investigation Bureau’s Ghosts and Monsters research. These people didn’t hope to be healed but hoped to transform into Ghosts and Monsters that could aid the Investigation Bureau after death.
Humans, driven to destruction by various negative emotions, are reborn from the ruins through uniquely human convictions.
Passing room after room, through oppressive corridors, the three teachers reached the top floor of the Investigation Bureau building.
"The director is waiting for you inside."
Pushing open the room’s door, an unextinguishable lamp illuminated the dark-toned office.
A middle-aged woman stood by the window facing the city’s depths, looking at Xinhu, which was now occupied by Ghosts and Monsters.
"Director, the people have been brought." After the two Investigation Bureau members spoke, they quietly retreated to the corner of the room.
The woman turned around, the left half of her body branded with hideous scars, the spot where her shoulder and neck connected seemingly pierced by a Hook Lock.
The disaster left indelible marks on her, bringing pain, despair, and endless torment, but instead of breaking her, it made her who she was today.
It was a face Han Fei was very familiar with, but her gaze felt strangely unfamiliar to him. The woman seemed to stand in the dark Shenhai, enduring unimaginable pressures, sinking in suffocating darkness, yet she not only refused to stop struggling but desired to become a flame burning in the deep ocean, countering the night and ocean with her sheer will.
"Li Xue?"
Han Fei couldn’t associate the woman before him with the female officer in his memories; the difference between them was simply too vast.
"You three young ones were able to kill the principal, indeed a bit beyond my expectations." The woman walked to the side of the office desk: "We’ve already cleared the school outpost; it was a human breeding ground built by three Black Buildings. The Ghosts and Monsters seem to explore new expansion methods, gathering abandoned infants and children everywhere to cultivate the Sacrificial Offerings they need. If you hadn’t killed the principal, the children in your class would’ve likely become the Ghosts in the Black Buildings."
"The Investigation Bureau knew about the school’s situation? Wouldn’t it be easy for you to kill the principal?" Wang Chuqing, having witnessed the Investigation Bureau’s strength, felt a little puzzled internally.
"We rarely make moves against the living." The woman pointed to a map of Xinhu on the wall: "Killing the principal and destroying the school would only result in the Hatred constructing a new breeding center, so our plan is to destroy the Black Buildings and let the three Hatreds Soul Scatter."
Wang Chuqing said nothing further; dealing with Hatreds of that level was beyond his ability. Besides the principal, probably only Yan Lan could withstand Hatred for a bit at the school.
Sitting on the room’s only chair, the woman’s gaze swept over the three teachers, finally stopping on Han Fei: "You know Zhao Ming and Zhang Xiaotian, and your gaze toward me is a bit strange. What’s your name exactly? Where do you come from?"
"I..." Han Fei glanced around: "You guys go out first. I can handle it myself."
After hesitating for a moment, Yan Lan and Wang Chuqing left, and Li Xue also gestured to the Investigation Bureau members, having them all leave and close the door, leaving only Han Fei and Li Xue in the room now.
"Can I speak now?" Li Xue silently looked at Han Fei, the terrifying pressure making Han Fei feel somewhat uneasy.
"You should know that ghosts are categorized as regret, grudge, and hatred. But do you know that above hatred, there is another kind of ghost, called the unspeakable entities?" Han Fei tried to clarify for Li Xue.
"Such ghosts indeed exist, but no one has ever seen them." Li Xue nodded slightly.
"I don’t know the exact cause of the great disaster, but an unspeakable entity is likely key among them. Its name is Gao Xing, and the name of this body I’m in is Gao Cheng. They are two children whose fates were swapped." Han Fei told Li Xue everything about Gao Cheng and Gao Xing, not concealing the existence of the Mother Ghost: "The Third Eye Hospital, the Deep Sea Aquarium, and the Elderly Care Home for Healthy Aging—these three deceit buildings are related to the two brothers, places where their fates are intertwined. If possible, I hope you can investigate these three deceit buildings as soon as possible."
"Very valuable information. Alright, I now understand who Gao Cheng is." Li Xue’s gaze became even more terrifying: "Next, you should tell me who Han Fei is?"
The air inside the room seemed to solidify; it was the first time Han Fei hesitated so much in the Shrine Memory World.
"Han Fei is me, your once best friend. We solved many cases together. I am a somewhat well-known... horror film actor." Han Fei recounted many small events, but Li Xue’s eyes still seemed unfamiliar. She completely didn’t remember these things happening, as if in the future dominated by Gao Xing, there was no person named Han Fei, and all his traces were erased.
"Do you not remember me?" For the first time, Han Fei felt the taste of being forgotten; all the things they experienced only he knew.
Faced with Han Fei’s questioning, Li Xue gave no response. She seemed to be determining whether Han Fei’s words were true or false.
"Do you think I’m deceiving you?" Han Fei walked to the desk and spoke of many things only Li Xue and he knew. He didn’t use any acting skills; it was all sincere emotions.
"No, I’m just considering a possibility." Li Xue stood up and left: "Come with me."
The two walked out of the office one after the other, and Li Xue led Han Fei to the evidence department.
The so-called evidence department is a place where items related to ghosts and monsters are stored. They are various curse items and the evidence of fierce ghosts committing crimes.
Descending from the top floor, passing through layers of guards, Li Xue opened the door of a separate compartment in the evidence department. Inside was a dilapidated altar with a faceless god statue lying flat on it.
"Why are you showing me this?" Han Fei had once seen similar altars and god statues at the Dark Merchant’s place, and it seemed there were other unspeakable entities in this Shrine Memory World.
"Ghosts above hatred are extremely difficult to kill. Each of them has their own shrine and god statue. But in the depths of that city, we discovered some faceless god statues. There is no information in the city related to these god statues, as if everything about the owners of these statues has been deliberately erased." Li Xue stood beside the broken altar and looked back at Han Fei.
"When an unspeakable ghost is killed, all traces of their existence are erased..." Han Fei suddenly connected the dots, his speech speeding up: "When an unspeakable entity is killed, they are erased! Kuangxiao used the god-stealing ability to enter the shrine, and the cost of activating that ability was to sacrifice everything, including memory, ability, and past existence! The reason why I and other children retain part of our memories is because he sacrificed himself alone!"
Han Fei stared hard at the faceless god statue: "Could it be that in the future dominated by Gao Xing, Kuangxiao became an unspeakable entity, ultimately killed, and all traces of him in the mortal world were erased?"
Everything matched up; goosebumps rose on Han Fei’s neck. This future without him was frighteningly real.
"Based on the information you’ve expressed, the most likely situation is that you became an unspeakable ghost during the great disaster, but due to various reasons, your soul scattered, and we forgot everything about you." Li Xue closed the door to the compartment: "Of course, this is just a hypothesis. The truth doesn’t really matter. I’m interested in what you plan to do next. Will you choose to stand with the ghosts or stand with the humans?"
"If you investigate Gao Cheng, you’ll find that although he’s made many mistakes, he has always hated ghosts and monsters, entering deceit buildings multiple times to investigate, using every ability to make changes. I’m now inhabiting his body, and my will is completely unified with his. This might be one reason why I am reborn in his body." Han Fei’s strength alone is very limited. He wants to join the Investigation Bureau, using their resources to accomplish some things. The thirty students of Class Seven likely have the same idea, which is why they didn’t hide anything and proved their value openly.
After Han Fei finished speaking, he noticed Li Xue was still observing him, though her gaze was not as sharp as before.
"Go find Zhao Ming to fill out the paperwork. He will arrange accommodations for you and all school survivors before dawn." Li Xue had nothing more to say to Han Fei and escorted him out of the evidence department.
After Han Fei reunited with the other teachers, several figures walked out of the evidence department. Each of them had their own unique personality.
"Director, you’re really letting him go like this? That guy seems very dangerous; his personality has awakened at least three times!"
"Is he really your friend? It doesn’t seem like he’s lying."
A series of subordinates followed behind Li Xue. If Han Fei had made any sudden moves earlier, he would likely have been taken down immediately.
"I indeed don’t remember him, but for some reason, when I think of the name Han Fei, I feel a deep pain, as if every cell in my body is desperately calling out for me to remember him." Li Xue’s gaze shifted to the distance: "Everyone should rest early. Tomorrow the deceit building we’re going to is the Deep Sea Aquarium. We can take him with us."
...
Upon returning to the school survivor camp, Han Fei entered the isolation area alone to rest. He wanted some peace and quiet.
The joy of seeing Li Xue was overshadowed by another emotion. Han Fei hadn’t expected Kuangxiao to sacrifice himself, providing others with the opportunity for god-stealing.
"Could this also be part of Number Two’s plan?"
The event had already transpired, and all Han Fei could do was not squander the opportunity Kuangxiao earned with his sacrifice: "I will protect all the children. This time, I will save everyone!"
