Chapter 823: Chapter 823: Intertwined and Entwined Fate
"Is Gao Cheng really this strong?"
After organizing the information in the office, Han Fei discovered that among the eight class teachers, Gao Cheng’s strength ranked in the top three. His ability was extremely eerie, he possessed numerous Curse Items, and had often ventured into Forbidden Buildings that ordinary people avoided.
"But why has he ended up in his current predicament? If all abilities originate from the personality, then how do I awaken the power of personality?"
The information in the office was limited. Han Fei put away his apartment key, preparing to go home.
Just as he stood up, he suddenly heard the sound of the door being pushed open. Two female teachers walked side by side into the teachers’ office.
"It’s so strange, I wasn’t visited by a ghost last night!" The head of Class Eight was a petite girl named Zhang Menglan. She was lively and cute, had permed hair, and manicured nails. She looked very young, seemingly just reaching adulthood.
"Isn’t this a good thing?" The woman following Zhang Menglan was called Yan Lan, the head of Class One. Her skin was exposed with terrifying tattoos, exuding a fierce and brutal aura like a beast.
"But I’ve been pinned down by a ghost for a whole week. Why didn’t it come last night? Did it go to some other girl? No way, tonight I must get an explanation from it." Zhang Menglan crossed her arms. Feeling uncomfortable under Han Fei’s gaze, she changed her posture.
The two female teachers did not greet Han Fei; he was like a plague god, and speaking to him would bring misfortune.
Han Fei had already accepted his unwelcoming persona. He tidied up the desktop, grabbed his backpack, and weakly walked out of the office.
"Made up your mind so quickly?" Yan Lan’s voice suddenly rang out behind Han Fei. He hadn’t noticed when she approached. "Staying at the school gives you a chance to survive, but if you leave, you’re likely to become a mentally deranged monster, eventually exiled to some Forbidden Building."
Metal chains clashed. Han Fei looked back at Yan Lan, who was taller than him, dressed in pure black, embodying both wildness and death.
"What else can I do?" Han Fei couldn’t comprehend. Yan Lan was alive, yet her aura was absurdly strong. It seemed like the power of personality.
"After you leave, Class Seven will be divided, and your students might end up with no one left." Yan Lan’s gaze was terrifying, like a sea monster ready to open its bloody maw. That was a rude way to describe a woman, but that was the impression she left on Han Fei.
"Do you have any good advice?" Han Fei felt she could crush his skull with one punch; his instinct was always accurate.
"I just think it would be a pity if you died like this. If you agree to my previous condition, perhaps I can help you." Yan Lan stopped paying attention to Han Fei, turning back to her place.
Throughout the process, Han Fei kept observing Yan Lan. On her spine was the imprint of silver-gray metal, her hands wrapped with curse-laden bandages, and every muscle in her body seemed to contain endless power.
"Did Gao Cheng have some kind of deal with Yan Lan? Is it the Pretty Man profession at work?" Han Fei glanced at Yan Lan’s fists, frowned, and left the office. "First, let me level with those children, then go back to the apartment to uncover Gao Cheng’s secret."
The "sickly" Han Fei returned to Class Seven. He intended to warn the children and let them prepare in advance, but as he approached the class, he heard a conversation inside the classroom.
"We know nothing about the outside city. Escaping school would be a dead end, so we might as well stay here and figure out how to kill all the teachers and the principal."
"I agree with Number Eleven’s proposal. Consider the worst-case scenario: if this city isn’t two-thirds occupied by ghosts but entirely occupied, we’ll face endless pursuit even if we escape."
"Then let’s start with our teacher: kill him, replace him, or recruit him?"
In the corridor, Han Fei’s heart pounded. He had just left for a moment, and the students were already planning to take down their teacher and the principal? This made his intention to return and relay information feel slightly inappropriate.
"Don’t be impulsive." Han Fei moved forward, looked into the classroom, and suddenly noticed a few empty seats. "Where are the people?"
"Teacher Gao, it seems your illness has improved," Number One’s calm voice appeared at the corner. Han Fei wanted to retreat, but Number Four, a thin student, silently emerged from the shadows, blocking his path.
They appeared to be just ordinary students, yet they gave Han Fei a very dangerous feeling.
"Did they intentionally let me hear those words in the classroom?" Back against the wall, Han Fei didn’t expect to face a life-and-death crisis right after waking up. Number One aside, Number Four genuinely had the intent to kill, which was very terrifying.
"We wanted to determine what kind of person you are." Number One stopped in front of Han Fei: "We didn’t sense any malice in you, which is strange because in such a cruel place, pure goodwill does not exist."
Han Fei felt a chill down his spine as the eyes of Number Four turned completely black; it seemed he already knew how to use the power of personality.
"I come from the same place as you. I promised someone that I would protect all the students in the class, not letting any die." Han Fei didn’t use his acting skills; he felt his Master-level Acting might not deceive these children.
"Enter the classroom." Number Four’s hand rested on Han Fei’s shoulder, and those jet-black eyes gave Han Fei the creeps.
The door closed, and Han Fei stood on the podium again, looking at the thirty students in the class. Beneath those innocent faces lurked hideous monsters.
He felt it wasn’t him teaching the students; instead, the students were deciding his fate.
"Teacher Gao truly seems to care for us." As the atmosphere in the class grew heavier, a little girl raised her hand. She was very young, with the number thirty written in her workbook: "I find him approachable, like a brother or a father."
Child Number Thirty had no combat abilities, but she seemed to see the essence of a person. She felt Han Fei gave her a familiar feeling like family, which was one of the highest evaluations.
"In a completely unfamiliar environment, it’s hard to believe someone." Number Two closed the book on the desk: "But someone has to try. His behavior and words match; he isn’t lying."
"I still feel very insecure and completely clueless about this world. With human nature being the most complex thing, how can you be sure he’ll always stick to his beliefs?" Number Four’s hand lingered on Han Fei’s shoulder like a wary venomous snake.
"Then let’s decide by voting." Number Five, Zhou Qi, raised his hand: "If you trust him, raise your hands; if not, remain silent."
The majority of the class didn’t raise their hands, and Zhou Qi understood everyone’s opinion: "I’m sorry, Teacher Gao, but I’d like you to leave here first. If you truly want to help us, then don’t meddle in our affairs. If you want us to trust you, then please trust us too."
The last thing Zhou Qi said vaguely reminded Han Fei that Kuangxiao had also said similar words before—these children didn’t want outsiders interfering.
"Alright, I’m leaving." There were no misunderstandings or misinterpretations; both sides were just trying to survive in this cruel world.
After taking a few steps, Han Fei stopped again, and as the entire class looked towards him, he hesitantly spoke to Number Four: "Have you already mastered the power of personality? How do you trigger such a power?"
"It varies from person to person." Number Four’s eyes returned to normal as he simply told Han Fei four words before showing him out of the classroom.
The sound of the door closing echoed, and Han Fei heard the last thing Number Five, Zhou Qi, said.
"The assessment is in three days. The moment we leave the classroom after school, I hope you will all strictly start carrying out your respective tasks. Let’s survive together!"
Han Fei also wanted to be with everyone, but the children wouldn’t include him in their activities.
"I did underestimate them before. Instead of worrying about their safety, I should first take care of my own body."
Leaning against the wall, Han Fei, who was disliked by most people at the school, left the teaching building and, following the map’s guidance, entered the teacher’s apartment.
Using the key to open the door, Han Fei was greeted by a mess of garbage and smashed furniture, with the room’s wallpaper slashed and crazed writings scribbled everywhere.
Han Fei also noticed a warning sign and torn-off caution tape hanging outside his door, indicating that his apartment was already deemed a danger zone by the school.
Standing silently inside, Han Fei saw several different footprints, indicating someone had been in his room.
"All the cursed items collected by Gao Cheng have been completely cleaned out by intruders, who didn’t even leave me any food or clean water."
The dilapidated sofa threatened to eject rusty springs at any moment, so Han Fei could only sit on an overturned wardrobe. Looking out at the slowly darkening sky, an unease and fear began to spread within him.
This emotion eroded his personality, constantly seeking to destroy it.
"It will surely be more dangerous after dark. I need to find a way to change this dire situation." Han Fei took out the Deceit Mirror: "This is the only item Gao Cheng brought back from the Deceit Building. That Eye Hospital was strange too; before Xinhu turned into the Ghost City, Gao Cheng had a severe illness, but after the disaster struck, his eyes actually recovered..."
Lowering his head to touch the mirror’s surface, Han Fei looked at his reflection: "Should I go to the Third Eye Hospital again?"
As Han Fei focused on thinking, he suddenly noticed that the reflection smiled and opened its mouth as if wanting to tell Han Fei something.
"Judging from the mouth shape, it seems to be saying ’bathroom’?"
Rushing to the bathroom, Han Fei knocked and tapped, then smashed open a floor tile, retrieving a notebook and a black key from underneath.
"Player number 0000, please note! You have discovered a Grade E Special Item: Gao Cheng’s Diary, and a Grade F Special Item: White Building Rental Apartment Key."
"Diary? How could the me in the mirror be so familiar with Gao Cheng’s house?" Han Fei stared at his reflection, with a face identical to his own but incredibly unfamiliar: "Could the real Gao Cheng be trapped inside the Deceit Mirror?"
Han Fei recalled his experience in Fu Sheng’s Memory Shrine, where he had become Fu Sheng’s father, Fu Yi, while the real Fu Yi was inside his body. Their fates overlapped, and their souls intertwined.
"What is the real relationship between Gao Cheng and the Master of Shrine, Gao Xing? Why did I become him after entering the shrine?"
Opening the diary, Han Fei was captivated after reading just a few lines.
Gao Cheng suffered from an eye disease, and his biological parents also had eye problems.
The night he was born, in order to get him treatment, his selfish parents secretly swapped him with another healthy child, changing both their destinies.
For every bloom, there is a wilting.
While he received various treatments and enjoyed endless parental love, the other originally healthy child suffered the world’s direst hardships.
Later, when the disaster struck, Gao Cheng’s adoptive parents revealed the truth to him. They had realized he wasn’t their biological child, but since their own child and that blind couple had both disappeared, they continued to treat Gao Cheng as their own.
In the midst of the great disaster, the adoptive parents continued to care for Gao Cheng until they were killed by ghosts and monsters. Gao Cheng lost all his family and turned into a monster himself.
Reading Gao Cheng’s diary, Han Fei learned many things. To survive, Gao Cheng stopped at nothing.
To restore his vision, he made deals with ghosts and monsters. To avoid being tormented and bullied by refugees, he sacrificed those people to the Red Mansion.
In Gao Cheng, everything human had vanished, leaving only a ghost wearing human skin.
The diary not only contained descriptions of his inner changes but also hand-drawn maps and exploration records.
Gao Cheng had entered the Deceit Building five times and returned safely each time. His diary contained information about the Third Eye Hospital, Elderly Care Home for Healthy Aging, and Deep Sea Aquarium—three "Deceit Buildings". This invaluable information was what the school most desired.
Besides the information on the three "Deceit Buildings", Gao Cheng had a secret storeroom outside the school, where the most precious cursed items and some supplies were stored. The key to open the storeroom was placed together with the diary.
