Chapter 793: D-Class Mission Ghost Card Case

Chapter 793: Chapter 793: D-Class Mission Ghost Card Case

The fifteenth floor had been cleaned by the Blood Shadow, making it relatively safe now. Han Fei released the Cat Ghost and the Black Python, and moved cautiously.

As he walked through the corridor, he felt the terrifying destructive power of the Ghost Gate Blood Shadow anew. Everywhere the Blood Shadow had passed was covered with thick layers of blood, as if the walls were covered with scars.

"I guess the Blood Shadow will be considered a new taboo by the residents of the building."

Han Fei took out the damaged elevator card and headed back the way he came.

Following the system’s prompt, Han Fei arrived at the place where he had encountered the Mutant Ghost, the monster that had occupied several Grave Houses was already killed, and its body was shattered all over the ground.

However, Han Fei was surprised to find that the monster was not dead, or more precisely, its soul had not completely dissipated yet.

"No wonder Sister Hong said Mutant Ghosts are hard to kill. The Blood Shadow tore it apart completely, and yet it’s still clinging to life."

Han Fei’s lips curled upwards in joy as he took out the Rebirth Slaughter Saber: "Once, I could not reach you, but now I will make you regret everything."

The brilliant light of the saber pierced through pieces of broken skin, the remnants of humanity and obsession of the Mutant Ghost were absorbed into the blade, and Han Fei could feel the Rebirth Slaughter Saber becoming even sharper.

"Ping!"

A strange noise in the corridor caught Han Fei’s attention, and he immediately stopped what he was doing and turned to look.

The Grave House was filled with garbage and rotting corpses, and at a glance, there seemed to be nothing unusual.

"No." Han Fei stood up and walked toward the door, suddenly stabbing his saber into the pile of garbage next to him: "Come out, I see you!"

A severed hand slowly rolled off the garbage pile, and a smelly little boy crawled out from underneath. He struggled hard to control his emotions, but upon seeing Han Fei, he burst into tears.

The dirty little hands wiped at his tears, and due to fear, his whole body twitched, as if he might faint at any moment.

"Don’t wipe your eyes with the hand you touched corpses with; you could go blind." Han Fei brushed the boy’s hand with the Rebirth Slaughter Saber. The boy was not seriously hurt, and he hadn’t killed or harmed anyone.

"Stop crying." Han Fei let out a slight breath of relief. He was down to one drop of blood himself, and the child could potentially kill him: "Keep crying and I’ll feed you to the Mutant Ghost."

Possibly the effect of the Child King’s Talent had kicked in, the boy sobbed for a while but eventually controlled his emotions.

"Why are you in such a dangerous place? Where are your parents?"

Han Fei turned on his Master-level Acting skills and spoke calmly to the child, but as he got closer, the kid broke down again, tears streaming down his face.

"Why are you crying again? Am I that scary?" Han Fei always thought of himself as a decent comedian and quite popular with the audience.

"Please, let us go." A weak voice from outside the corridor said. A young man dragging a worn-out backpack crawled out from behind the garbage pile. He had multiple festering wounds and his arms were covered with molds, probably soon turning him into a Mutant Ghost.

"There’s another one?" Han Fei was puzzled because he hadn’t sensed the man’s presence, but after he finished speaking, another very weak woman crawled out of the man’s hiding spot.

The young couple did not dare to look directly at Han Fei. They crawled to the door of the Grave House, and the young man, sensing he had committed a taboo, didn’t wait for Han Fei to speak but started kowtowing to him.

"Both of us are about to turn into Mutant Ghosts. Please spare that child. He knows nothing. He has just begun to see this world."

In this skyscraper, the dignity of the lower levels had long been torn apart.

The couple kept pleading, and the boy cried again.

"Enough!" Han Fei stepped back: "What’s so good to see in such a filthy and ugly world?"

With this, the couple thought Han Fei was going to kill them, and they became even more nervous.

"Spare the child, I’ll do anything you ask, I’ll give everything for his life." The young man’s forehead was covered in blood and mold mixed together as he tightly grabbed the mud on the ground.

"Why would I kill you? Go on, disappear from my sight." Han Fei grabbed the little boy’s clothes, lifting him up to face the couple: "Do I look like a cruel person?"

"The child can sense evil, he’s so scared of you, it means you are a..." The young man began to speak but quickly covered his mouth; however, it was already too late.

Han Fei patted the little boy’s head, receiving a system prompt.

"Player 0000, please note! You have discovered a special resident—Zangzang."

"Zangzang (Special Resident): Born in the skyscraper, his parents have never done anything wrong, they are innocents; he possesses a pure heart. Divine Spirits favor such Sacrificial Offerings, his kind is sought daily by the followers."

"To meet someone with a pure heart in such chaos?" Han Fei found it unbelievable: "You guys get up, good people shouldn’t kneel; good people should take up a Slaughter Saber and kill all the bad ones."

Coarse words, yet the logic was sound; equality was never something to be begged for, Han Fei hoped the parents would understand this as well.

With Han Fei’s insistent request, the young couple finally stood up, and Zangzang’s father, to show his gratitude, hurriedly pulled a piece of human skin, the size of a palm, from his pocket: "I tore this from the body of the Grave House Mutant Ghost; it should be your trophy."

"How can the skin of a Mutant Ghost be so smooth?" Han Fei took the human skin, incredulous, the skin felt pleasant and carried a strange scent.

"Mutant Ghosts with a disfigurement level above seventy percent sometimes grow new skin, which is an exceedingly rare piece of new skin. In other floors, it can be traded for a week’s food," the young man explained.

"A week’s food?" Han Fei nodded. Opening his Item Bar, he took out some food that Huang Ying had given him: "This should be enough for your family for a long time."

Seeing those foods that only existed in their memories, the young couple felt as though they were under some thaumaturgy. Zangzang’s father touched a bit with his fingertip, pressed it to his lips, and his eyes immediately moistened.

He called Zangzang over to him and proudly told Zangzang the names and flavors of various foods, but he himself didn’t eat any more.

"Help yourselves, I have plenty of food here." Han Fei took out the Fierce Ghost’s new clothes and on a whim, stitched the Mutant Ghost’s skin onto them as well.

"Attention Player 0000! Your friendliness levels with Zhang Xiaowei have increased by three! Your friendliness levels with Jin Wei have increased by three!"

A hearty meal had bettered the couple’s friendliness toward him, and to Han Fei’s surprise, he had just seen their names earlier that day in the police archives.

Both had disappeared in the Ghost Card Case. To this day, their bodies had not been found.

"Eat slowly, take your time," Han Fei said calmly. "Most of this floor consists of Grave Houses. Why haven’t you thought about moving to another floor?"

"Those believers always want to take away my child. We had no choice but to hide on this floor," Zhang Xiaowei looked at Han Fei with immense gratitude in his eyes. "Most of the people living on our floor are here to seek refuge. Although our bodies are ugly and deformed, not knowing when we might turn into Mutant Ghosts, I feel this floor is much cleaner than others. I feel more at ease with Zangzang here."

"Zangzang is our child’s nickname," Jin Wei put down the food in her hands and explained to Han Fei. "Because there are many curses in this building, we haven’t given the child his real name; we just call him Zangzang. But although he is called Zangzang, his heart is very pure and kind."

"Are there other people on this floor?" Han Fei mused. "Let’s meet everyone. I have a way to cure the wounds on your bodies."

Seeing the couple hesitate, Han Fei took out the Rebirth Slaughter Saber and cut off the disfigured parts of Zhao Xiaowei’s body.

The couple was astounded; Han Fei’s knife seemed to have lethal power only against Ghosts and Monsters, maximizing their protection.

"Alright! I’ll take you there right now!"

The family of three, carrying the food, entered the fifteenth floor’s secret passage. They walked a long way, and the air’s foul smell grew increasingly unbearable.

"We’ve arrived. Normally, everyone gathers here in this corridor, and whoever gets extra food will bring it out to share."

Zhang Xiaowei rang a bell on the wall. The dark hallway lit up with a faint glow, and several ragged residents came out from their hiding places.

"Xiaowei, why have you brought an outsider here?" The leading old man stopped in his tracks upon seeing Han Fei, his expression growing solemn.

"Uncle Li, he is a good man, and he even gave me food."

"You are so foolish beyond saving! There’s no such thing as a free lunch in this building!" The old man’s beard trembled with anger, and he coughed violently, his eyes filled with hostility along with those of his fellow residents from the fifteenth floor.

"Li Shisong, a doctor from the Xinhu Old City District Ninth Hospital, the oldest disappearer in the Ghost Card Case, had seen other victims before his disappearance and was once suspected by the police as the murderer of the Ghost Card Case." Han Fei recognized the old man’s face immediately; the man had suffered endlessly within the skyscraper, looking half-human, half-ghost, and utterly pitiful.

"I know words can’t persuade you, so I will prove it through actions. Some of you have mutated so severely that if not treated, you’ll turn into Mutant Ghosts, and the houses you lived in will become new Grave Houses." Han Fei took out the Rebirth Slaughter Saber: "I can save you."

"Uncle Li, everything he said is true!" Zhang Xiaowei raised his arm: "I was saved by him."

At the persuasion of Zhang Xiaowei and his wife, several residents with severe bodily mutations were carried out.

Han Fei used the Rebirth Slaughter Saber to cut off the mutated parts of their bodies and treated them with Shallow World medicine sent by Huang Ying. The effect wasn’t great, but it indeed prolonged their lives.

"This only treats the symptoms, not the root cause; nearly all the units on the fifteenth floor are Grave Houses. It would be best if you moved to a different floor," Han Fei said after treating their wounds. The hostility of the victims towards him had vanished, and many started to warm up to him.

"If we could leave, who would want to stay here?" Li Shisong’s attitude changed a lot, his gaze towards Han Fei filled with slight apology: "The fifteenth floor is a garbage dump, where unwanted trash from other floors is stored. Maybe it wasn’t filled with many Grave Houses initially, but as more and more people mutate here, more Grave Houses emerge."

The old man spoke uncomfortably, shaking his hand off, "Let’s not talk about this anymore. Thanks for rescuing us, but I’m still curious, why do you want to help us?"

"Helping you is helping myself," Han Fei employed master-level acting, showing the gentlest smile: "I am a Crime Chaser, and maybe one day I might get lost, but for now, I still believe in hope, fairness, and justice."

Upon learning that Han Fei was a Crime Chaser, several residents on the fifteenth floor increased their friendliness towards him again.

"A new taboo has arisen in the building, the fifteenth floor has been cleared, but it’s possible that others might come to check the situation later. I suggest you hide on other floors for now," Han Fei said after having a deep conversation with these innocent residents, most of whom were victims of the Ghost Card Case. When the friendliness level of all victims increased to three or above, a system notification sounded in his head.

"Attention player number 0000! You have triggered a Level D high-difficulty task—The Ghost Card Case."

"Ghost Card Case: One of Xinhu’s top ten unsolved mysteries. The Big Ghost carved the faces of fifty-three serial killers on poker cards, with hearts representing heart removal, clubs for dismemberment, diamonds signify being boxed and buried alive, and spades symbolizing disappearance and mystery. Everyone who receives a Ghost Card will die within three days, and the Joker distributing the cards along with the Big Ghost behind the scenes have not yet been found."

"Task Requirement: Level D tasks consist of multiple steps, completing one will unlock the next!"

"Task One: Proceed to the twenty-fifth floor and obtain the first Ghost Card!"

"Attention! All Level D tasks are related to the Unspeakable. They may not appear in the tasks, but you will definitely encounter something related to them during the tasks."

Upon hearing the task notification, a hint of surprise flashed in Han Fei’s eyes; he hadn’t expected the Ghost Card Case to be a Level D task: "Could one of the top ten mysteries of Xinhu back in the day have been done by the Unspeakable within this building? Is he that hidden Big Ghost?"
