My ‘Healing’ Game -
Chapter 789: The Face in the Blood
Chapter 789: Chapter 789: The Face in the Blood
The journalist picked up the cup of Blood Wine that Han Fei had left and downed it in one go, as if only alcohol could numb his pain and temporarily make him forget about the bug in his brain.
"Have you looked into the Welfare Home set up by Eternal Life Pharmaceutical?"
Han Fei’s expression changed, and he pointed at his own face, "Have you ever seen a child with a Healing-type Personality?"
"I’ve forgotten everything related to those children. If you really want to know, you can go find those who stuffed the bug into my brain," the journalist said casually as he tossed aside Han Fei’s wine cup, "Alright, let me see the passage you were talking about."
"No problem."
Han Fei took two steps back, his fingers moving over the Attribute Panel.
"Soul-summoning!"
The splashing blood water instantly tore through the Attribute Panel, the thick scent of blood like a long-brewing storm, swallowing up the tiny room in the blink of an eye.
The journalist, who had been lying on the bed, had an incredulous look on his face. Bracing himself up with his arms, he stared fixedly at the space in front of Han Fei.
He couldn’t see the Ghost Gate that had ripped open on the Attribute Panel, but he could distinctly feel an endless stream of terror originating from somewhere in the room; the smell of blood did not belong to the Skyscraper.
"Huang Ying!"
Those two simple Chinese characters made the storm above the Blood Sea even more intense; another Monster that Han Fei had summoned seemed to sense something too, as the Blood Shadow moved frantically inside the building.
The Ghost Faces that floated on the sea began to scream, one after another, they were forced into the Blood Sea under Han Fei’s will.
Ringing the Soul-guiding Bell, the name Huang Ying was bitten by a Ghost Face and dragged out of the sea.
Five fingers grasped the edge of the Ghost Gate, droplets of Blood Pearl fell along the white garment, and behind Huang Ying, Nightmares twisted and changed incessantly as they stepped out from the Ghost Gate.
The pitch-black pupils that were fully immersed in nightmares gradually returned to normal. Seeing Han Fei, Huang Ying’s expression slowly eased, "What do you need me to do?"
Huang Ying never asked what kind of trouble Han Fei had encountered; if he could help, everything was fine.
"Are you making a rush for Level 40?" Han Fei didn’t expect Huang Ying to level up so quickly; he was beginning to exude the aura of a top player.
"I’ve selected the three Hidden Professions that suit me best from over a dozen and completed my third class change. I should be able to help you out," said Huang Ying, who used to have nothing but levels, with the same mindset as an ordinary player. But ever since Butterfly pulled him into the Dream, allowing the mother, transformed by Butterfly, to kill him countless times, Huang Ying truly had changed.
Without waiting for Han Fei to speak, Huang Ying opened his Item Bar, showing off the various rare items and tools he had collected, "These are all prepared for you; I just never had the chance to give them to you."
"Brother Huang Ying, you’ve really helped me out a lot." If it had been anywhere else, the things Huang Ying brought wouldn’t have been of much use, but inside the Skyscraper, even a piece of flesh not contaminated by mold could be traded for a lot.
"Glad I could help," Huang Ying said as he took things out of the Item Bar, his eyes also turning to the journalist at his side, "Who is he?"
"A fallen hero." Han Fei could feel the Blood Shadow closing in fast; the Evil Ghost that had crawled out of the Blood Sea seemed quite interested in Huang Ying as well, "Brother Huang, I will send you away right now; this place is too dangerous."
Han Fei quickly packed the supplies Huang Ying brought into his Item Bar and immediately used Soul-returning to send Huang Ying back.
After Huang Ying left, it seemed like the Blood Shadow lost its clear target. The speed at which it moved towards Han Fei’s side obviously slowed down.
"You must have seen it too." Han Fei placed a bottle of Shallow World liquor in front of the journalist, "I can take you home."
"Home..." The journalist didn’t know how long it had been since he’d last heard the word. He looked towards the place where the Ghost Gate had appeared, his pupils throbbing violently, with blood-red symbols of sin emerging from his neck like red-hot branding irons.
But now the journalist couldn’t feel any pain at all. He grabbed the bottle and took a fierce gulp.
It burned his throat, and his eyes were still filled with Blood Silks, but a spark of light was reignited from the ashes deep within his gaze.
"As long as you can get me out of this Skyscraper, let me see my child one more time, to see with my own eyes that he is still alive! Then everything I own is yours! Including my soul, dignity, and freedom!"
Staggering to his feet, the journalist’s messy and dirty hair hung over his face. Within his seemingly weak frame, he hid a terrifying Power. Those blood-red symbols of sin empowered him like Poison Insects, granting him powers and special Talents while also tormenting his Will at all times.
"Deal," Han Fei said, shaking the journalist’s outstretched hand.
"Player Number 0000, please note! You have discovered the Night Watchman—Ji Zheng!"
"Ji Zheng (Forbidden-level Night Watchman): Night Watchmen are graded according to their level of danger into Warning, Forbidden, Disaster, and Night levels."
"Caution! Those who once clung to justice have now become the most terrifying people in the building! Be very careful around them! Even the weakest Night Watchman is extremely dangerous!"
The system’s notification did not include information about Ji Zheng’s Abilities, possibly because Ji Zheng did not fully trust Han Fei yet.
"I came to you for another reason. Deep in the corridor on the sixth floor, there is a Disaster Ghost hiding; a surviving worker from the Rustic Ladder asked me to find you," Han Fei was preparing to tackle the high-difficulty E-level task.
"Has he become a Disaster Ghost?" Ji Zheng showed a cruel smile, "The Rustic Ladder cleaner had once asked me to kill that child, but what they didn’t know was that the child was one of the kids who had been killed in the Eternal Life Pharmaceutical Welfare Home. I’m not sure why he appeared on the sixth floor and became a Resentment-filled Curse."
"You know the Disaster Ghost?"
"It’s more than just acquaintance," Ji Zheng said, touching his camera. "After I received the payment for being the Rustic Ladder janitor, I not only spared the kid’s life, but also taught him how to become stronger. The kid was nurtured by me with sin and hatred; by now, he must be unable to control himself, and that hatred is about to become a disaster!"
Ji Zheng now looked completely different from before. The scales of good and evil in his heart had been destroyed, leaving only a self full of holes and scars.
"Does the kid know he will eventually turn into a monster?"
"I once gave him a choice, to leave this world without pain or to live in it forever in pain, spreading his suffering to those criminals who like to create pain." Ji Zheng stood up and pushed open the door of the tavern’s cubicle, the dim light outside casting shadows on his somewhat fierce face. "In the end, he made the same choice as me."
Seeing Ji Zheng walking out of the room, the hotel lobby fell silent all at once. They stared at Ji Zheng in horror, astonishedly looking at Han Fei.
"An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, that’s how this building treated us, and that’s how we’ll repay it," Han Fei nodded, touching the Ghost Pattern. "Fair, isn’t it?"
"How come you Crime Chasers sound like Night Watchmen?" The smile at the corner of Ji Zheng’s mouth became more pronounced as he and Han Fei walked side by side out of the tavern, followed by the other special residents.
The group headed for the elevator, but before they reached it, an extremely piercing scream came from somewhere downstairs.
Han Fei’s soul felt as if it had been pricked by a needle, and pain shot through him. He paid close attention and discovered that the connection between him and the Ghost Gate Blood Shadow had suddenly intensified!
The Blood Shadow seemed to have erupted into conflict with something in the corridor, going all out, using some unknown special ability.
"How bold to walk in the corridor after midnight."
Sister Hong’s softly murmured voice reached Han Fei. "Is it dangerous to be in the corridor after midnight?"
"There are taboos in the corridor." Ji Zheng lifted his camera and took a picture in the direction of the sound. "But normal people wouldn’t cause such a commotion when encountering a taboo, unless a taboo met another taboo."
He looked into his camera for a few moments and urged Han Fei, "Let’s go, we’ll head to the sixth floor first; I will lead the Disaster Ghost away."
"The few of you take the elevator card to the sixth floor; I need to go somewhere else now," Han Fei grabbed the collector. "You are the boss of the Rustic Ladder janitors on the tenth floor; you must have other elevator cards, right?"
"I do, but I can’t just bring someone else to use them..."
"Cut the crap." Han Fei looked at Ji Zheng. "If the Disaster Ghost can control itself, I’m willing to accept him. The sixth floor is my territory; you can try anything there."
"Is your hurry to leave because of the taboo in the corridor?" Ji Zheng fiddled with his camera. "I did see you and that taboo connected by the line of fate."
"We must leave immediately!" Han Fei had underestimated Ji Zheng’s ability, but that was fine with him.
After binding the collector, Han Fei forced him to use the elevator card, and they entered elevator number nine together.
"Hurry up!" Han Fei was restless; he could already feel the Blood Shadow rapidly approaching, and it seemed that the taboo in the corridor had injured it.
"Which floor are we going to?"
"The higher, the better!" Han Fei closed the elevator and saw the collector pressed the button for the 25th floor. "Can’t we go higher?"
"Taking the elevator is also quite dangerous. The higher it is, the more likely it is to encounter accidents; the 25th floor is my limit," Ji Zheng felt like crying, having not felt this helpless in a long time.
"I’ll trust you this time." Han Fei glanced at the slowly changing numbers on the elevator screen, his face somber. The distance between him and the Blood Shadow was closing fast!
That creature seemed to have also entered the elevator shaft, grabbing the compensation chain under the elevator and climbing up furiously!
"I triggered it during my third Soul-summoning, then it fought and got injured by the taboo in the corridor, and now it must be in its most frenzied state. I can’t be caught by it now."
He opened the Attribute Panel, and while the exit button was not yet lit, he figured it would be soon, given the time.
People’s joys and sorrows do not communicate; Han Fei was sweating with urgency, while the collector breathed a cold sigh on seeing the constantly changing numbers. There were many forbidden areas upstairs, not places one should carelessly wander into.
11th floor, 13th floor...
When the elevator stopped on the 15th floor, a spot of bloodstain appeared at the bottom of the elevator car.
In a very short time, the bloodstain spread widely, as if springing from a fountain, the blood oozing from underneath the elevator!
"What’s going on?" The collector’s face showed panic, having never experienced such a situation in his many rides on the elevator.
"Is there any danger on the 15th floor?" Han Fei frantically pressed the elevator’s door open button.
"I rarely come to the 15th floor." In the moment the collector was in a daze, the elevator doors slid open to both sides, and Han Fei already dashed out. "Where are you going?"
"Run!"
Han Fei answered cleanly, and a few seconds later, the collector, still standing inside the elevator, felt the whole world turn blood red.
He looked up, and the crimson Blood Shadow enveloped the elevator car. Within the torrent of blood, there was a face vaguely resembling Han Fei’s.
