Chapter 601: Chapter 601: Let’s Go, Move Forward, to a Farther Place
Rain started to fall within the plastic surgery hospital, where specks of light and Blood Pearl mixed together, washing over the mutated architecture.
The wife, always gentle and forbearing, stood in the rain, her body covered with scars from chains.
"I saw his face, when Fu Yi was about to drag me into the Abyss, he was the one who stopped Fu Yi."
"Haven’t you all noticed? Starting from a certain day, Fu Yi seemed like a completely different person."
The wife looked towards Li Guo’er, still working hard to piece together a corpse, her gaze filled with sorrow and pain.
"It was Fu Yi who abused his power to get close to you, hurt you without restraint, and then left after you had feelings for him. That afternoon, when he saw the car spiraling out of control, he didn’t care about his own safety, and rushed to save you."
Her voice slowly grew louder, and the wife pointed her finger at the youngest female netizen.
"It was Fu Yi who deceived you with flattery, destroyed all his promises after getting everything he wanted, and abandoned you. On that rainy midnight, he was the one who carried you, feverish and unconscious, all the way to the hospital, sitting by your bedside until your condition improved."
The wife seemed to want to express everything in her heart, she then looked towards Fu Yi’s mother.
"I know it’s been very hard for you. Fu Yi abandoned his wife and child, leaving you to face these undeserved hardships alone. But the one who shirked his responsibilities and scurried away like a rat was Fu Yi. It was he who, despite being surrounded by hundreds, still dared to rush forward and snatch your daughter’s photo. Losing his job and his reputation, he cared not, for at that time, what he was most worried about was still your daughter’s illness!"
With every word dripping with tears, the wife’s gaze swept over Teacher Liu.
"I know about the affair between you and Fu Yi, I’ve also seen your chat records. Every time Fu Yi sought you out, he’d claim I was the worst wife, that he couldn’t find Love at home, and then he’d do everything in his power to denigrate me and the kids, all to gain your sympathy and soften your heart."
"Your father was once slandered, and Fu Yi never cared for the truth. He just promised you that he would never become like your father. But this man lying here never believed the gossip, investigated personally, and unearthed the truth buried for over a decade, restoring your father’s innocence!"
Her voice became louder and louder, she seemed determined to say all she kept inside.
"Fu Sheng’s mom, you must be the person who understands Fu Yi second only to me."
"Fu Yi was the one philandering behind your back, hitting Fu Sheng hard in order to maintain so-called paternal dignity, it was also Fu Yi who cut off all contact with the outside world for Fu Sheng, choosing to enclose himself in solitude."
"He never fulfilled his duties as a father and husband, tearing this family apart!"
"When I gave up everything, when I couldn’t bear it anymore, someone appeared. He was completely different from Fu Yi, putting in every effort to bond the fragmented family together."
"He never brought his bad moods home, treated the children with gentleness and respect without spoiling them. He’d tie on an apron and make delicious meals for the kids, willing to stoop down to play all kinds of childish games with Fu Tian. But when Fu Sheng was bullied by hooligans, he rushed over without a second thought. To get Fu Sheng back to school, to stop the bullying, he argued with teachers and even fought with the favoring Building Chief. Teacher Liu also knows about these incidents."
"He was the one who guided your child out of despair, saved you a second before the car accident, carried you to the hospital, overturned the case against your father, and even if it meant losing his job and being scorned by thousands, he still went on to save your daughter."
Enveloped by Hatred, her gaze moved from one scornful face to another, finally resting on Han Fei’s corpse.
"The one who gave me that little bit of hope was still him," she declared solemnly.
Having said all she wanted to say, the wife stood still, the Hatred around her unable to shield her from the rain falling from the sky.
The prayerful specks of light and the mutated Blood Pearl fell upon her outer garment, but she seemed completely unaffected.
Sighing softly, Zhao Qian wanted to comfort the wife with a word, but found she was unable to do so.
Placing a hand on Han Fei’s shoulder, she too left behind all her Hatred and Love, then turned and walked away.
Love and Zhao Qian left the mutated hospital, and they might never come back.
One by one, seething with Hatred, all left their hate and love in Han Fei’s body, only Zhuang Wen’s lips tightened.
The Building Chief was dead, his body shattered to pieces...
Seeing others imbue Han Fei’s body with their Hatred, Zhuang Wen also grabbed the nearby soul-scattered, faceless woman, leaving behind their Hatred in the body and then trying to use Hatred to repair Han Fei’s corpse.
There was no way to bring back the person, the best outcome was to bring back a complete corpse.
After much hesitation, Zhuang Wen finally decided to speak to the wife, when suddenly Li Guo’er next to her blurted out, "Can I take him away?"
Zhuang Wen’s blood-colored pupils suddenly contracted. Was there competition for this, too?
Seeing the wife despondent, as if indifferent to everything around her, Li Guo’er seemed to already know the answer.
She took off the broken glasses and without a smile on her face, bowed deeply to the wife, "I’m sorry."
Hate and Love all poured into the corpse, and the women surrounding the God Statue’s base began to leave one after another.
Some left everything behind, some pretended to forget, some maintained a facade of strength, some left all their Hate and Love but couldn’t forget those brief moments of memory.
As each person filled with Hatred left the mutated hospital, the building drenched by the prayerful rain seemed to start returning to normal.
Mutation could not be reversed, yet in the people’s prayers, the mutated architecture was gradually covered by the mundane.
Sorrow and despair were veiled, and slowly, the fissures in the earth and night sky began to mend.
At the base of the God Statue, Han Fei’s shattered form, entangled by Hatred and Love, gradually pieced back together.
His wife stood by Han Fei’s side the entire time, until the rain in the night sky ceased.
The Hatred within her had dissipated, transforming into a unique emotion; she wanted to help Han Fei restore his fragmented heart.
Caressing the broken heart, the wife’s tears fell down her cheeks, and the once frigid heart felt a trace of warmth.
"I should have brought you home, but I know others are waiting for you," she said.
Letting go of all Hatred and Love, the wife placed Han Fei’s heart back within his chest.
She withdrew her hands, filled with reluctance, and looking up at Zhuang Wen, said, "Take him home."
Zhuang Wen hadn’t expected the wife to say such a thing. The Black Fire in her eyes flickered gently, but she quickly realized something; in the Shrine Memory World, there was no Black Fire in their Hatred. Their Hate and Love didn’t need to be scorched by Black Fire; they were already the purest form.
"Do you trust me?" Zhuang Wen asked.
"You do not belong here. As hatred twisted everything, I remembered many things and many people," the wife said, turning away slowly. "This is the best ending we could have."
She dissipated all her Love and Hatred and began to walk out of the hospital, pausing after a few steps.
Taking one last deep look at Han Fei’s body, she softly said to Zhuang Wen, "Take him home, don’t worry those who love him."
The marks of Hatred’s Hate and Love branded Han Fei’s body, gradually making it whole again.
Walking towards the outside of the hospital, the wife did not look back again, her empty heart clutched as she walked down the darkened streets.
Step by step, she headed home, suddenly feeling how vast the city was, and how far home seemed.
The thick night slowly receded, and the morning sun’s light shone upon her.
Using her key, the wife opened the door as she always had, changed her shoes, tied on an apron, and entered the kitchen.
She wanted to prepare breakfast for her family as before, but upon touching the kitchen utensils, she realized she couldn’t pretend that everything was normal.
Leaning against the cupboard, the wife slowly sat in the kitchen corner, hugging her knees, trying not to cry too loudly, afraid of waking the kids.
The partially closed kitchen door was gently pushed open, and Fu Sheng, who hadn’t slept all night, stood in the doorway. The father often did not return home for the night, but this time, Fu Sheng inexplicably felt panic and fear.
Handing a tissue to his mother, Fu Sheng squatted beside her, not daring to ask that question.
After a very long time, the wife finally looked up again, her eyes swollen red, and said to Fu Sheng, "Daddy has gone to a very far place, and he might not be able to come home again."
Upon hearing his mother’s words, Fu Sheng’s mind seemed to pause for a second, slightly disoriented, as if his body couldn’t yet process the information and was still living in the inertia of daily life.
"Where was he last night?"
"At that hospital. His last call was to strictly forbid you from going there..." Before the wife could finish, Fu Sheng had run out the door.
He didn’t know why he was desperately running there, as if by running harder and harder, he could hold onto his father.
His mind was blank, he should do something, it seemed he was chasing after something.
The altered hospital looked ordinary under the sunlight, and for the hospital, this day seemed just like any other ordinary day, so mundane that nobody remembered it.
Running into the hospital, Fu Sheng asked anyone he met about his father, knowing he worked there as a Nurse.
Wandering aimlessly in the hospital, asking questions, nobody had an answer.
The sprinting Fu Sheng was eventually stopped by the Security Guard, and just as he was about to be driven out, a Doctor and her brother, who was a Nurse, hurried over.
"Do you know which room Fu Yi is in? He works here as a Nurse, I want to see him!" Fu Sheng grasped the male Nurse’s arm, whose gaze was complex, "You know where he is, don’t you! Tell me!"
"He has already left," the Doctor revealed, taking out a crumpled diagnostic report. "He suffered from this illness for a long time, and he kept dragging it on."
"Doctor, I just want to see him now! Please let me see him!" Fu Sheng clutched the diagnostic report, becoming increasingly agitated, as the Security Guards crowded around him again.
"Sorry."
The Security Guard pulled Fu Sheng away, and the male nurse kept trying to console him, leading him to the places where Fu Yi used to work. Everything was still there, except the person was gone.
As the sun rose higher and more people filled the hospital, Fu Sheng followed the Nurse like a zombie until he was finally swept away in the crowd.
Clinging to the diagnostic report kept secret until the end, Fu Sheng sat on the hospital steps, unsure what he was thinking, just sitting there for a long time.
The sunlight cast a shadow on the window, and as the day rose and fell, the shadow of the window changed slowly too.
Fu Sheng, holding the diagnosis report, walked down the stairs, not knowing what later motivated him to get up.
He left the hospital and walked onto the bustling city street.
Passersby went to and fro, vehicles constantly zoomed past, and as Fu Sheng looked at the busy city, he felt like a letter that had been tossed into a mailbox without an address, with no origin and no future.
"Fu Sheng!"
It seemed someone was calling his name from the crowd, but after looking around for a long time, he couldn’t find the person.
Heading towards the direction of the voice, Fu Sheng saw Fu Tian’s mother, anxiously walking towards him.
"Don’t run off on your own in the future, I’m afraid I won’t be able to find you..." His wife’s expression had returned to normal, except her eyes were still a bit red and swollen; she pulled Fu Sheng to her side.
"From now on, no matter where I go, I’ll let you know." Fu Sheng looked at Fu Tian’s mother—He had never called the woman before him "Mom," but she never minded.
"Mm, I’ve made the meal, let’s eat together." His wife and Fu Sheng made their way through the bustling crowd and returned to their old neighborhood.
Opening the old security door, his wife brought out the food from the kitchen. Fu Sheng quietly folded the diagnosis report and hid it in his trouser pocket.
The same dining table as before, but one chair was now empty.
Fu Sheng and his wife bowed their heads to eat, while Fu Tian on the chair looked at his mom and then at his brother, suddenly speaking up with a spoon in his hand, "Where’s Dad? Hasn’t he come back yet?"
"Dad has gone away for work, and it might take a year or two before he can come back. He’s working very hard for our family," his wife said with a tone slightly different from usual.
"Then, can I call Dad? I want him to come back as soon as possible; I still want to play hide-and-seek with him, and this time I’m sure I’ll find him!" Fu Tian said cheerfully, eating his food heartily.
"Dad has a job with secrets, so he can’t just make phone calls." Fu Sheng took his bowl and chopsticks to the kitchen: "I’ve finished eating."
After washing the dishes, he returned to his own room.
He closed the door, drew the curtains, and sat on the edge of the bed.
Seeing Fu Sheng lock his door, his wife wanted to say something, but in the end, she stayed silent.
Looking down at Fu Tian, who usually despised carrots, didn’t pick his food this time. It seemed he was trying to make his mom happy by specifically choosing carrots to eat.
"Don’t you usually hate carrots?"
"I’m not a little kid anymore; only little kids are picky eaters." Fu Tian wasted nothing, finishing his meal: "Dad once said before he left, if he ever went away, I must protect Mom and never make you angry."
"Did he tell you that?"
"Yeah, Dad told me lots of things! He said you are the best wife in the world and if you ever argue, it would definitely be his fault! He also said my brother and I are destined to become big shots who will change the world! Mom, what’s a big shot?"
"It’s someone as impressive as your dad." The wife turned her head away and only spoke after a long while: "After you finish eating, go and do your homework."
"Okay!"
When Fu Tian went back to his small room, his wife started cleaning. She always kept herself busy, constantly finding things to do.
Time flowed slowly, from the rising to the setting of the sun, then disappearing beyond the horizon.
The wife, exhausted from the day’s work, entered the bedroom, lying on her side, facing the empty space beside the bed, staring at the floor as if she was thinking of someone.
"Knock, knock, knock!"
Suddenly, there was a knocking at the bedroom door. The wife sat up from the bed and ran to open it.
Wearing his pajamas, Fu Tian stood at the bedroom door, his eyes moist as though he’d had a bad dream.
"What’s the matter?"
"I miss Dad, and I can’t sleep."
Biting her lip, the wife didn’t say another word, but instead gently embraced Fu Tian.
Adults tend to tacitly avoid talking or thinking about certain things, but children don’t understand and will pierce through that silence, wearing all the sorrow on their faces.
"How about I tell you a story?"
She tucked Fu Tian into bed and took out a storybook, beginning to tell him those beautiful fairy tales.
Time ticked on, unaffected by anyone’s departure.
After the night had passed, a new day dawned.
The wife rose early to prepare meals, as she had before, only now she had to prepare one less set of utensils and breakfast.
The room door opened, and after the meal was prepared, Fu Sheng also walked out from inside the house.
He was dressed in a brand new school uniform, carrying his backpack, just as he did the first time he walked out of his room.
"I’ve placed your lunchbox, be careful when you eat."
"Okay," Fu Sheng picked up the lunchbox, "I’m off to school."
As he left the old neighborhood, Fu Sheng opened his backpack, ready to put the lunchbox inside, but suddenly he saw the cat food he bought for the stray cats was still there.
He clearly remembered the scene from that day, his father got fired from the gaming company and went to look for a new job, and he unexpectedly ran into his father at the school gate, only to find out that his father had taken a job as a nurse at the plastic surgery hospital.
"I used to not want to remember anything about him, but now I’m realizing that, in fact, I remember all these little details so clearly."
Holding the just-about-to-expire cat food can, Fu Sheng didn’t go to school; instead, he headed to the bus stop.
When that familiar bus arrived at the station, he subconsciously boarded it.
The early morning bus was filled with people: office workers, seniors returning from their morning exercise, and students heading to school.
Everyone was crowded together, swaying with the movement of the bus, and occasionally, acquaintances would exchange a few words.
"Check this out guys, this game was officially released at five this morning, I’ve been squatted all night until I finally got it! It’s super explosive!"
"Isn’t it just a love simulation game?"
"Love simulation? Put on the headphones first, you definitely can’t play this game out loud."
The bus passed by one stop after another, and Fu Sheng, holding his backpack, looked at the scenery outside the window.
About half an hour later, he got off the bus and arrived at a nearly abandoned little park.
Walking on the weed-covered path, Fu Sheng opened the cat food can, but strangely, there wasn’t a single stray cat in the little park that came over.
Carrying his backpack, he walked forward and suddenly noticed that there seemed to be someone sitting on a bench in the distance.
The untrimmed bushes obscured most of the person’s body, and Fu Sheng began to quicken his pace unintentionally; he leaped over the bushes, racing towards that bench in the park.
His heart was racing faster and faster, and he almost dashed over.
For some reason, his heart filled with anticipation, Fu Sheng pushed through the bushes, and then he looked closely at the bench.
A young man was sitting on one side of the bench, holding a big bag full of beer, and around him congregated quite a number of stray cats.
Fu Sheng watched the bench where the young man sat, remembering that morning.
Skipping class, he had encountered his jobless and homeless father here.
Holding the opened can of cat food, Fu Sheng sat on the other side of the bench, placing the cat food on the ground, and watched as each stray cat ate.
"Hey, why are you skipping class again?" The young man looked at Fu Sheng with a smile on his face.
Fu Sheng wasn’t in the mood to talk to strangers, his gaze fixed on the cat food can on the ground.
"Drink some? After you get drunk, you’ll feel a bit better." The young man opened a can of beer and placed it in front of Fu Sheng.
Listening to that somewhat familiar tone, Fu Sheng turned to look at the young man, then his eyes moved to the beer can; he frowned and shook his head.
"How can a kid in the prime of youth look so worried all the time? You need to perk up!"
The young man stretched his hand melting in the sunlight into his pocket, then pulled out a black box from the bag filled with beer with his other hand.
"I’ve been conflicted for several days whether I should give you this thing."
The young man seemed to be talking to himself, and in the end, he didn’t give the black box to Fu Sheng but put it away himself.
"Forget it, a future that was so hard to change, how can I go back?"
Standing up, the young man looked at Fu Sheng one last time, "There are still a lot of people in this world who love you, I know it’s because of them that you kept making that choice. Go on, stop skipping classes, haven’t you promised someone that you would not?"
Under Fu Sheng’s surprised gaze, the young man walked unsteadily towards the park exit, and before leaving the park, he took out his phone with his back to Fu Sheng and lightly pressed it.
The ringtone from the phone went off, and it took Fu Sheng a few seconds to seem to suddenly realize something; he rummaged through his backpack and found the phone his father had bought for him.
That phone, with only his father’s number saved on it, rang once; he turned it on, and there was a new message from his father.
"Go on, move forward, to farther places, to see more landscapes, to be a better version of yourself."
