Chapter 573: Chapter 573: Two Hidden Achievements
Carrying his filthy backpack, Fu Sheng stood where he was, waiting until Han Fei’s figure disappeared into the hospital.
"He doesn’t want me near the hospital, does he not want me to see his pathetic state?"
After his biological mother died, Fu Sheng completely shut himself off, refusing to communicate with the outside world, living in his own realm.
In fact, he was right to do so, for if he stepped out of his world, he would see the beastly acts of Fu Yi. He always felt surrounded by filth, so he might as well lock himself away.
Not listening, not watching, not thinking.
But recently, when the quarrels at home turned into Fu Tian’s laughter, Fu Sheng tried to look outside his room. He saw a different side of his father.
No more angry scolding, no more demands, no more reveling outside, no more coming home to argue and smash things.
His father had changed, gentle, steady, reliable as if he could bear the weight of the sky and hold up their home.
Fu Sheng began to hesitate. He only peeked through the crack of the door, but little did he know that a beam of light from outside had shone into his sealed room.
As the door slowly opened, Fu Sheng seemed to see his father extending his hand towards him, wanting to pull him out of all the misfortune and pain.
Countless disappointments made Fu Sheng wary of trusting his father, but slowly, when he came to his senses, he found that he had already stepped out of the room and was standing by his father’s side.
"Being a nurse is very exhausting, dealing with patients’ excreta, and getting scolded if not careful. Your dad looks over thirty, right? It’s not easy for someone his age to start working as a nurse. I saw him just now, he could hardly stand steady, probably his health isn’t great too," the food vendor, who approached Fu Sheng, handed him a boxed meal, "Take this and eat, don’t make your dad worry. It’s getting cloudy, might rain later, you better hurry back to school."
"I’ll pay you."
"What for? It’s not expensive," the vendor waved dismissively.
Holding the boxed meal, Fu Sheng reached the roadside, forgetting how he had boarded the bus.
Hearing the announcement inside the bus, he suddenly woke up and hurriedly grabbed his backpack to get off.
Unwittingly, he found himself back at the bus stop in front of his home. He had never considered the room where his stepmother, half-brother, and father lived as his home, but when he was feeling conflicted, he still unconsciously returned there.
"It seems he hasn’t yelled at me since some day."
Looking at the distant school, Fu Sheng felt truly conflicted. There were many reasons he didn’t want to enter that place, bullying being just one of them.
The sky gradually darkened, clouds gathered, covering the sun.
Carrying his backpack, Fu Sheng slowly walked towards the school, with many bad memories flashing through his mind.
The desk was scribbled over, homework stolen, classmates pointing at him and calling him a freak.
The teachers, who should have maintained order, ignored him. Each time they called his parents, instead, he ended up being smeared.
From the principal to the teachers, it seemed everyone wanted him gone.
The places where classmates had beaten him no longer hurt, but the brain retained the memory of being hit.
The only person at school who had spoken up for him was Liu Lina, but Fu Sheng was painfully aware of Teacher Liu’s relationship with his father, which made the kindness even more tormenting.
He was just a high school student, at an age where he should be focusing on studies, yet he faced one awful thing after another.
All those unrelated to him stood against him. The only teacher willing to help had that special relationship with his father, and whenever he thought of this, he felt it might be better if everyone was hostile towards him, completely stripping him of any last positive feeling toward the world.
Bearing unrealistic hopes despite clearly seeing no hope was truly the most torturous.
As he neared the school gate, Fu Sheng stopped, unable to go any further.
"Isn’t school just a place for learning? I can study on my own, I don’t actually need anyone, I can do my best all by myself. Even if I were in a lonely world filled only with ghosts and myself, I could live better than now."
A raindrop fell on Fu Sheng’s hair. He could rush into the school classrooms to avoid the rain, run back home nearby to keep dry, or he could leave by himself to find a corner to take shelter.
Three different choices, corresponding to following his father’s advice, trusting his family, and maintaining the status quo, respectively.
The rain slowly soaked the ground as nearby students and pedestrians started running. Fu Sheng’s grip on his backpack tightened, then slowly relaxed.
He didn’t move forward, nor did he want to just leave.
The rain grew heavier, and Fu Sheng’s hair was completely drenched. As he watched the raindrops fall from the sky and shatter on the ground, he decided to flee.
But just as he turned around, it seemed as if the raindrops were blocked. They slid down a black umbrella and no longer soaked his clothes.
A black umbrella was held above Fu Sheng, and Teacher Liu, whose hair and shoulders were drenched, stood next to him.
"Teacher Liu?"
"The rain’s too heavy, let’s seek shelter inside for now," Teacher Liu said as he held the umbrella, "You finally came back, many of us here at the school, including me, have been waiting for your return."
"Teacher..."
"You used to run to the playground on rainy days to hold an umbrella over a young sapling; I could never understand what you were doing at that time. But now I understand." Teacher Liu softly said a word of thanks.
Fu Sheng looked at Teacher Liu, who was holding the umbrella for him but ended up getting his own body and hair wet. He was about to say something when it seemed like someone was waving at him from afar.
Looking towards the end of the rain curtain, the modestly dressed old principal stood next to the sapling at the corner of the playground, smiling and waving, motioning for Fu Sheng to come forward.
Unconsciously moving forward, Fu Sheng had never thought about these things when he initially held the umbrella over the sapling.
He only did it because he had endured lots of rain himself and wanted to shield them, nothing more than that.
Walking through the rain curtain, Fu Sheng and Teacher Liu entered the school.
From afar, a female student ran down the stairs in front of the teaching building, happier to see Fu Sheng than anyone else.
Fu Sheng, who had never smiled before, slightly relaxed his tight lips into a faint smile upon seeing the twisted-limbed girl.
Walking through the corridor, Fu Sheng reached the classroom door; he hadn’t even passed through when he saw a fat boy being pushed out of the classroom door.
The fat boy fell to the ground, his uniform zipper broken, with various patterns drawn on his back with a marker, including words that read "son of a murderer."
After he fell, several boys from the class laughed and chased after him; however, as soon as they saw Teacher Liu and Fu Sheng, they immediately became docile and hurried back to their seats.
The fat boy, who once led the bullying against Fu Sheng, lost his usual arrogance. Covering his swollen face, it took him a while to get up.
"When you used to bully others, did you ever think you would be bullied like this one day?"
Fu Sheng ignored the fat boy; he neither wanted to be bullied nor enjoyed bullying others.
Returning to the classroom, Fu Sheng took his seat, which used to be next to a pile of trash but now the trash pile had moved to the fat boy’s side.
He looked at the brand-new desk and chair. The surrounding classmates all watched him.
Their gazes were devoid of mocking and malice, only curiosity, remorse, and a hint of fear.
Fu Sheng knew about his father hitting the principal, but he had not expected his classmates to become so well-behaved now.
"What exactly had Fu Yi done at the school?"
Opening his textbook, Fu Sheng suddenly turned his head to look at the windowsill beside him, then moved his chair away from the windowsill.
The twisted-limbed girl sat on the windowsill, almost pressing herself against Fu Sheng with her hand waving constantly in front of him, as if to say—Pay attention to me, pay attention to me.
Possibly due to the excessive movement, the girl’s wrist shook several times before it suddenly detached, and her whole hand fell onto Fu Sheng’s textbook.
Taking a deep breath, Fu Sheng took out a pen and wrote on the book, "Don’t move around during class, listen attentively. I will study physics and chemistry, you focus on the other subjects; during the entrance exam, I’ll take you with me."
As the bell for the beginning of classes rang, Fu Sheng’s first session since returning to school began.

"Player number 0000, please note! Congratulations on completing the hidden achievement—Helping Fu Sheng Smile! Fu Sheng’s Hatred reduces by one! Mom’s Hatred reduces by two!"
While cleaning, Han Fei suddenly heard the system’s notification; he paused for a moment, then nodded his head.
"He himself is a kind and sensible child, but I really didn’t expect that such a person would ultimately choose to destroy the entire Deep World."
