Chapter 521: Chapter 521: A Pitch-Black White Orphanage (4000 Votes for Monthly Ticket)

"Close your eyes when it gets dark?" the children at the orphanage had obviously never played this type of game before, curiosity gleaming in their eyes.

"The rules are simple," Han Fei explained. "I’ll write down three roles on these pieces of paper: ordinary person, ghost, and spirit communicator. We all shout ’close your eyes when it gets dark.’ After closing our eyes, the ghost begins its move, killing one person each night. After the ghost kills someone, the spirit communicator can check one person’s identity to see if they are really a ghost. When it becomes light again, everyone opens their eyes, and we vote. The minority will follow the majority. If we successfully catch the ghost, the humans win; if the ghost kills everyone, then the ghost wins."

Han Fei recited the rules again, and that slightly twisted boy instantly became interested, finding this much more intriguing than anything involving cardboard houses.

"The more people, the better for this game. Go call the other children in the orphanage who want to play," Han Fei scanned the room again. "Where’s that little girl from before?"

"She... sneaked back to the dormitory to sleep," the boy said as he slipped his hands into his pockets, his fingers still had a few strands of hair. "She’s very tired, let’s not disturb her. I’ll go and find the other children for you."

Watching the boy turn and walk toward the door, Han Fei’s gaze slowly shifted to the bleeding paper houses. "A place this awful might as well be destroyed."

He opened the attribute panel and scrolled up just as the boy emerged from the hiding place made of paper houses, receiving a system notification.

"Attention, Player Number 0000! You have successfully completed the third game with the children! Reward acquired—Clue Three."

"Clue Three: The child you are looking for wears white shoes and is hiding in a room in the orphanage."

The problematic child in everyone’s mind, wearing white shoes, hiding alone in a room.

These details were now quite specific, and Han Fei had eliminated most of the children, so there was no need to hold back any longer.

The door opened, and the boy clearly wasn’t doing this for the first time as he skillfully ran toward a particular room.

Crossing the corridor, the boy’s steps were light. He even paused to listen at two doors in the middle of the hallway, making sure there was no noise inside before daring to continue forward.

"The two rooms we just passed are the director’s office and the nanny’s resting room. We can do whatever we want inside, but if we wake them up, our fate will be very miserable."

Upon reaching the corner of the hallway, the boy led Han Fei into another room.

With a creaking sound, the dark door was pushed open, and the dim light shone upon the boy.

"Stop pretending to sleep, everyone get up and play the game."

This room was a dormitory for the orphanage’s children, housing about a dozen people in one large room without windows, and various odors wafted through the air. The entire room was like a sealed black can.

"Everyone, get up!" Once Han Fei entered, the boy closed the dormitory door and then turned on the only light in the room.

The dim light illuminated the faces of the children, causing a slight change in Han Fei’s expression.

Most of the children in this room had some form of disability, some even unable to get out of bed on their own.

The light dispelled the darkness and jolted the children from their sweet dreams.

Confused faces turned toward the door, and when they saw the oldest boy, they immediately became alert, their eyes revealing fear.

These physically disadvantaged children seemed to have often been bullied by that boy.

Seeing a few children still huddled under their blankets, the boy ran over, threw aside their blankets, and even shoved one child under the bed.

The other children seemed accustomed to such behavior. The bullied children, upon seeing the boy, behaved oddly, clenching their teeth and covering their mouths, enduring the pain in silence, too afraid to make a sound.

It seemed if they made noise and attracted the nanny, they would face something even more terrifying.

The psychologically twisted boy gloated over the children, about to teach another child a lesson when Han Fei stopped him.

"Does bullying those weaker than you make you happy?"

"I know you feel pity for them, but every child in this room is beyond sympathy," the boy said, smiling with mad cruelty. He grabbed a deformed child by the leg, "Do you think I’m despicable? But do you know this child killed his own parents? They didn’t despise him for his deformity, yet he poured deadly poison into their drinking cups. And that child..."

He kicked a nearby short, chubby boy, "He cut the safety rope of a window cleaner outside the high-rise, paralyzing an adult in bed. Remember the little girl who almost killed us before? She pushed a girl, much cuter than her, into a furnace."

The boy laughed manically, "Do you think they deserve sympathy? Everyone here wishes you dead. This place holds the most incurable poison insects, the smaller the body, the deeper the venom."

He pointed at each orphan, narrating the horrors associated with them.

The evil in adults is often premeditated, but the evil in some children is simply pure malice.

Education could guide these children on the right path, but those lacking education and guidance could become increasingly terrifying.

Having previously sensed something off about the orphanage, Han Fei finally understood after hearing the oldest boy’s words. These children seemed to be incarnations of some sort of malevolence.

The boy woke all the children, forcing them to come over.

There were about thirty beds in the dorm, with children occupying fourteen of them.

"Is this everyone?" There were no children isolated in the dorm; none were the ones Han Fei was searching for. He also examined everyone’s shoes; they were all light red.

"Counting the three of us, there are seventeen people here, one of whom will act as the host while the rest can participate in the game," Han Fei said, pushing forward a boy holding a doll, "You’ll be the host for the first game."

Han Fei stood amidst a group of oddly shaped children, patiently explaining the rules of the ’Close Your Eyes When It’s Dark’ game. The boy with the doll acted as host, not participating in the game. Afterwards, Han Fei took sixteen identical pieces of white paper from the item bar.

"I will write the identities of human, ghost, and spirit communicator on these sixteen white papers. You absolutely must not reveal your identity to others, or the ghost might kill you," Han Fei ensured all the children understood the rules, then wrote ’human’ on all sixteen papers, shuffled the order in front of everyone, and distributed the folded papers to each ghost child.

"I reiterate, the ghost’s goal is to kill all humans, the humans’ goal is to expose all ghosts, and the spirit communicator can verify a child’s identity with the host’s hints after the ghost kills someone, though a ghost can also pretend to be a spirit communicator. The rules are simple, but breaking them can also lead to death."

For the children in the Underworld Orphanage, this indeed seemed more appealing than the usual games.

"After a player is killed, the white paper with his identity is also destroyed. When only people or only ghosts are remaining, the announcer declares the winner of the game."

"Alright, alright, we already know the rules, let’s get started already." The oldest boy was getting impatient. He stood in the corner, secretly opened his white paper, and looked somewhat dissatisfied with the text written on it.

The children took their places according to their bed numbers, and the game officially began.

"It’s dark now, please close your eyes." The little boy holding a stuffed toy was the announcer. After he said the phrase, he turned off the lights in the dormitory.

"Fierce Ghost, please open your eyes."

Han Fei took out the Rebirth Saber. He silently walked to the back of the boy, who had played three games with him, meeting the minimum game requirement.

With a swift motion of the saber, the Rebirth Saber became incredibly sharp as it touched the boy, shredding his soul instantly. This also indicated that he had harmed many people.

"Player number 0000, please note! You have killed a child from the orphanage. Each child you personally kill increases the probability that the Nanny and the Director will awaken by one point and decreases the chance of finding your target child by one point."

Hearing the system’s prompt, Han Fei frowned slightly. He had originally planned to use this game to eliminate some of the Little Ghosts, but now he needed to change his plan.

"If I can’t kill them personally, then let them do it themselves."

He sheathed the Rebirth Saber. As the light from the blade faded, Han Fei noticed a child covering his mouth and staring at him; that child hadn’t followed the game rules.

He returned to his spot, and the child with the stuffed toy continued, "Spirit Communicator, please open your eyes."

The boy waited a long time without anyone opening their eyes, so he continued, "It’s daylight now, the person who died last night is number twenty-four."

The orphans looked at the seat where the boy used to sit. There was no concern in their eyes; instead, they breathed a sigh of relief because number twenty-four was dead.

Previously, number twenty-four was the Child King of the orphanage. Everyone had to listen to him; otherwise, they would be isolated and bullied continuously. Now that guy was finally dead.

"I...I saw him kill someone last night!" The child who did not close his eyes when the lights went off pointed at Han Fei, "He’s the ghost, he killed him!"

After the child said this, all the children looked at Han Fei. Facing their twisted faces, Han Fei shook his head lightly, "I’m human, you’re the ghost."

He was indeed human, and the child was indeed a ghost. Han Fei was not lying.

"It was you who killed him! I saw it!"

"According to the game rules, only ghosts and Spirit Communicators can open their eyes at night. If you’re human and you opened your eyes, that’s cheating and you should die; if you’re a ghost, you’re probably framing me to mislead others to kill me during the day; if you’re the Spirit Communicator, indeed, seeing me kill isn’t a problem, but the key is, I’m the Spirit Communicator," Han Fei looked at the accusing boy, "Out of these three possibilities, which one do you fall under?"

Cheating leads to death, and this type of death meant Soul Scattering. The Underworld typically plays for keeps with no chances for a restart.

The boy stuttered, unable to reply, while Han Fei pointed at another child and said, "The person I checked last night was you, and you are human."

The boy was playing this type of game for the first time and instinctively nodded.

"Only a Spirit Communicator can check another’s identity, and there’s only one Spirit Communicator. The ghost will do everything possible to kill the Spirit Communicator," Han Fei pointed to himself, "If I don’t survive the next night, then you can focus your suspicions around him."

With Han Fei’s constant guidance, most children thought the accuser was the ghost. After the vote ended, the other orphans all turned to look at the boy who was voted out; their gazes slowly changed.

It’s unclear who made the first move, but at the moment the night lights went off, a group of children rushed over.

The boy who was voted out didn’t even scream before his soul was torn apart, leaving only his torn red clothes and a pair of pale red shoes on the ground.

Staring at those clothes, Han Fei suddenly realized something; the number on the back of the clothes was also 024.

"The oldest boy’s number was 024, and this child’s number is also 024?" Han Fei looked at the surrounding children, "Are all your numbers 024?"

"Yes, because we are all children from Orphanage 024. But we all have our names; only the Director’s favorite child is called 024." The child explained to Han Fei, "The Director’s previous favorite was the boy who was just killed by the ghost. He had always been helping the Director."

"024 is the number for the white shoes, but here, all the children are 024, filled with malice—are all these children the evil essence of the white shoes?"

Han Fei always found it strange that such a dark, evil-filled orphanage full of malice was called White Orphanage by the system. White must be a special color here; since his arrival, he had not seen any white decorations around.

"A pitch-black White Orphanage?"

When a person’s evil begins to rampage, his goodness must be locked deep within his heart.

"Let’s start the next round," he said.

Han Fei’s passive Child King ability was triggered, and with his Master-level Acting skills, he played those who had never played "It’s dark, please close your eyes" right into the palm of his hand.

Until there were only a few people left, Han Fei quietly stood up.

When the boy once again shouted "It’s dark, please close your eyes," Han Fei took the little boy and quietly left.

During the game, Han Fei had gathered from the children the location of the most secretive room in the orphanage. He did not plan to stay any longer.

Walking along the corridor, Han Fei arrived in front of the Director’s office door. The most secretive room was inside the Director’s office.

Gently pushing open the door, there was a white door on the floor of the Director’s office, standing out strikingly against the dark, dilapidated office.
