Chapter 517: Chapter 517: Hiding Mom (4000 Votes for Monthly Ticket)
"Yes, I’m back," Han Fei said as he sat at the table, discussing his recent circumstances with Wei Youfu, while Little Eight hugged a small flower pot and quietly listened, the family gathered around the table.
"Youfu, I have a way now that could let you see Old Master Wei one last time, but..." Han Fei wanted to try soul-summoning to see if he could get Old Master Wei to come.
However, Wei Youfu shook his head immediately after hearing this, "I know what you mean, but let’s forget about it. It took him so long to get used to my departure; I don’t want to make him suffer again."
As he helped Little Eight gather her loose hair, Wei Youfu spoke while braiding it for her, "Our eight bodies merged together; I don’t want Old Master Wei to see what I look like now."
"If you ever change your mind, you can find me anytime," Han Fei said, checking Wei Youfu’s injuries. The injuries sustained in the Death Building had healed well: "Are you still unable to leave the Happiness Residental Community as you please?"
Wei Youfu nodded, "Whenever I step out of the Happiness Residental Community, a voice deep in my soul starts to warn me. Staying outside the community for a long time might attract something terrifying. It’s not just me; other victims of the Human-body Puzzle experience the same thing."
"Why is that?"
"Fu Sheng said that Little Eight is a key, which might be related," Wei Youfu said as he looked at the innocent Little Eight, "Fu Sheng and his three kids are Unspeakable. They once penetrated deep into the city, and even though Fu Sheng’s memories were shattered and he met a dreadful fate in the end, he gained something. It seems he uncovered a secret of the Deep World, and that secret is hidden in Little Eight."
The girl continued humming to the flower pot; if one listened carefully, it seemed to be a soul-summoning chant, a song also sung by the Unspeakable.
"After our merger, we became top-tier resentments, but none of us have the power to control the wild aura post-merger. If we ever get the chance to become Hate and spark our own Black Fire, we might not lose control so easily," Wei Youfu, frail as he was, was the only one among the victims of the Human-body Puzzle who kept his sanity.
"So, after becoming Hate, you can gain freedom?" Han Fei also felt that Little Eight was very crucial. In fact, every resident in the Happiness Residental Community was carefully selected by Fu Sheng to stay, each more potential-filled and terrifying than the last.
Cry possessed a Talent similar to the singing, capable of wide-range attacks, domain possession, and even despair manipulation.
Meng Shi was the only successfully transformed resident of the Deep World, devoid of any murderous intent or resentment.
Xu Qin was a Curse Aggregation, extremely unique, and liked cooking, beautifully startling.
Mirror God was a streak of kindness from the Unspeakable, Ying Yue was not only powerful herself but could also create Ghost Patterns.
On reflection, the remaining residents in Building One seemed to be the greatest support Fu Sheng left for his successors.
This Guide didn’t provide Han Fei with any treasures, but he had prepared a group of reliable neighbors for him.
Whether Han Fei would be killed by his neighbors or if he could gain their trust were issues Fu Sheng seemed to never have considered.
While Han Fei and Wei Youfu conversed, Bai Xian slowly awoke. His eyelids fluttered, then suddenly sprang open.
With his mouth wide open, he seemed to want to shout something, but his throat felt burning hot, his vocal cords were hoarse.
"Brother Bai, you’re awake?"
Han Fei walked over slowly with a cup of water, but as he approached, Bai Xian fainted again, this time more severely than before.
"What’s going on?" Touching the beast-faced mask on his face, Han Fei felt it was better to send Bai Xian back first. He had other matters to attend to tonight and couldn’t stay here for too long.
"Today, I’ll use Brother Bai to gain some hidden virtue, and after exiting the game, I’ll go check on his condition," said Han Fei.
Using the Soul-returning Talent, Han Fei sent the unconscious Bai Xian back to the Shallow World.
It was very difficult to persuade Bai Xian to join the game, but sending him away turned out to be very easy.
It seemed as if a force was guiding Bai Xian back, a phenomenon Han Fei had never encountered when using the Soul-returning Talent on others.
"Having a high Luck Value is indeed beneficial."
With this encounter in the Underworld, Han Fei felt that his relationship with Bai Xian had deepened, the only regret being that Bai Xian was too timid, and many of the trials Han Fei had prepared were left unused.
There was no choice but to wait for next time.
With the hidden virtue acquired, Han Fei said goodbye to Wei Youfu and Meng Shi, then began heading towards the edges of the Fog with other neighbors.
"The Plastic Surgery Hospital always thought it was the people in the Death Building causing trouble, and they definitely keep watch over the areas shrouded in the heavy fog; they would never expect us to come out from the Department Store’s side," Han Fei brought Zhuang Wen along this time; he wanted to mobilize all his force to uncover the secrets held within that Orphanage.
Before logging into the game, the words of the Liuli Cat had deeply moved him. Every child sees a different Orphanage; each child is trapped within an Orphanage of their own.
The Orphanage in the Plastic Surgery Hospital Area, with its windows painted over, must be the one that belongs to the little white shoes; inside, perhaps, lies the past of the little white shoes.
The group left the Fog and went through alleyways between different areas to reach the Department Store.
Han Fei shared his plans with the Mirror God; he had intended to rely on the Mirror God’s power, but unfortunately, the Mirror God was only capable of showing strength comparable to Hatred when it was within the Department Store.
He could coordinate with Han Fei, assisting him in controlling the Shrine to attack and influence the ghosts and monsters near the Department Store, but if the distance exceeded a hundred meters, then they were helpless.
"The best strategy is for you to drive the ’prey’ near the Department Store, only then can I exert my full strength."
"Okay, I’ll try my best to lure the enemies over," Han Fei stood near the Shrine, harboring a doubt in his mind, "Normally, once Hatred steps into a certain area, it should immediately be detected by another Hatred ignited by Black Fire, but why didn’t the Hatred in the Plastic Surgery Hospital Area react violently when the Ten Fingers fled into it?"
"That cunning fellow escaped with several important goods from the White Goods Store, among which was one item left by my actual body, called the Desire Coat," the Mirror God pushed aside a shelf behind the Shrine, revealing an empty room, "People always like to embellish their inner desires beautifully; that coat, formed by countless people’s greed, is a very rare item."
"Could this Desire Coat prevent outsiders from spying? If I were to give it to Little Eight, could she also leave the Happiness Residential Community?" Han Fei pondered in his mind, "Besides the Desire Coat, what else did the Ten Fingers steal?"
"Another piece of flesh."
Hearing the Mirror God’s words, Xu Qin also came over.
"Flesh?"
"Unspeakable heart-flesh, brought back by my actual body from deep within the city, that piece of flesh will not decay and will continuously ooze fresh blood and murderous intent," the Mirror God took a ledger from the shelf and wrote a few entries, then handed the ledger to Han Fei, "The list here includes everything the Ten Fingers stole, with the most important being the Desire Coat and that piece of flesh, you must retrieve them."
"Understood," Han Fei stored the ledger carefully and finalized the details with the Mirror God.
After everything was ready, Han Fei had Zhuang Wen stay at the department store entrance for backup, while he himself, relying on the concealment effects of the Shrine Mist and the beast-faced mask, carried the Spiritual Altar and scouted the Plastic Surgery Hospital Area first.
He used Yinghuo’s cellphone to keep in touch with Haha and Zhuang Wen continuously, and as soon as they confirmed the whereabouts of their prey here, he would immediately notify Zhuang Wen to strike, catching the three hatreds at the Plastic Surgery Hospital by surprise.
"The Hatreds at the Plastic Surgery Hospital know nothing about the Death Building, but with the help of Doctor Yan, I’ve almost figured out all the details about the three hatreds. How could they win this fight?"
Moving swiftly through the city’s shadows, Han Fei completely immersed himself in the role of a ghost, running at a high speed without making a sound.
The abandoned orphanage was not far from the department store, and along the way, Han Fei encountered some ghosts and monsters. Different from those near the mist, these exhibited more normal behavior.
Han Fei didn’t go out of his way to trouble them. He avoided them whenever possible until he saw the orphanage located at the end of the street.
The architectural style of that building was different from all the others within the Plastic Surgery Hospital Area; it had gray high walls and a black roof, altogether giving off a deathly vibe.
"Every other building is twisted and askew, the only one that resembles the real orphanage in reality is this one."
Han Fei didn’t approach immediately; clutching the Spiritual Altar and wearing the landlord’s ring, he first circled around the orphanage.
The building seemed small, but it took Han Fei a full twenty minutes to complete the circle. Additionally, he discovered that none of the buildings in the orphanage had windows installed.
Solid walls sealed the orphanage completely. The rooms inside were like coffins, with only one oppressive iron door. Once the door was shut, it was completely isolated from the outside world.
"Didn’t Doctor Yan say that the Painter painted full of windows here?"
Once sure it was safe, Han Fei slowly approached with the Spiritual Altar.
Walking down the skewed road, Han Fei reached the orphanage’s back door where a dark iron gate stood before him, through which he could see the desolate and dilapidated courtyard inside.
Moving closer, Han Fei discovered a rusty doorplate next to the iron gate, with a corrosion-filled number on it—024.
"None of the other buildings on the street have door numbers, only this one does. This doorplate number is likely to represent Little White Shoes’ own number," whispered Han Fei as he gently raised his arm, ready to open the door, "Number 24, so far back?"
His fingertips touched the iron gate, and at that moment, hysterical laughter suddenly rang in Han Fei’s mind!
The piercing sound nearly tore his eardrums and shattered his memory.
Pressing his temples, Han Fei bent over, his face contorted in pain.
"Are you here to find someone?"
A child’s immature voice came from the other side of the iron gate. Han Fei’s gaze slowly returned to normal. It took him more than ten seconds to fully calm himself down, despite his control over his facial muscles.
When he looked up again, a kind and warm smile had appeared on Han Fei’s face.
"Little friend, is your director here? I have some things I’d like to discuss with him."
Inside the iron gate stood a little boy, dressed in light red clothes, pants, and shoes.
"The director is in his office, he hasn’t come out for a long time." The child appeared to be only five or six years old. He struggled to open the small gate next to him for Han Fei, "Come inside. Mom said it’s very dangerous outside, you shouldn’t stay out too long."
"Mom?" Han Fei noted this peculiar term for an orphan.
Upon entering the orphanage, the surroundings instantly quieted down, seeming like a different world from the outside.
"I’ll take you to the director." The boy wobbled forward like a little penguin. He hadn’t gone far when a stone flew towards him, hitting his arm.
The child covered his arm, his face full of grievance, tears swirling in his eyes, but he didn’t dare stop and instead sped up.
The faster he ran, the more stones were thrown at him, but none of them hit him again.
The boy looked up at the person beside him who shielded him from the stones with his body.
"Daring to throw such big stones? You guys come here!" Han Fei held up the Spiritual Altar, looking ready to hurl it at any moment.
Seeing how fierce Han Fei was, three children hiding in the bushes dropped their stones and ran toward the back of the building.
"Really need a lesson, I’ll put all of you in urns and cremate you when I get back."
Hearing Han Fei’s words, the bullied child was also a bit scared and, holding his arm, didn’t dare to speak.
"Are you alright?"
"It’s okay, no worries." The boy moved his arm and continued wobbling forward. Just as they were about to enter the first building, he suddenly stopped and whispered, "Mom? How was mom discovered?"
Han Fei also followed the boy’s gaze. There was a tall, burly woman wearing an apron, dragging a large bag of trash towards the orphanage’s main gate.
The landlord’s ring issued a warning. The woman, over two meters tall, was a Medium-type Resentment, her body emitting a chilly aura.
"Don’t go over there yet," Han Fei stopped the little boy.
The burly woman piled several bags of trash near the space next to the main gate and then turned to enter a room.
"Mom! Mom is over there!" The little boy anxiously repeated several times. After Han Fei released his grip, he ran straight toward the pile of trash.
He rummaged through the bags and soon dragged out a tattered and stinking woman’s doll from one of the trash bags.
"Is this what you called mom?" At first, Han Fei thought the boy referred to the Medium-type Resentment as his mother, but now he realized that was not the case.
The boy nodded, "They always want to kill mom, we must hide her!"
