Chapter 445: The title of Chapter 445: The Hand that Pushed Him into the Abyss
Brother Snake had already teamed up with Han Fei, and they would not send Han Fei away, but Han Fei had still not received the notification that the task was complete.
"I didn’t leave with Wang Quan, yet the mission is still not successful? Could there be something else that will happen?"
The real issues related to the mission seemed yet to appear, Han Fei had to remain cautious at all times, but he had been up all night without closing his eyes. Without sleep, his physical condition was beginning to deteriorate, making him increasingly weak.
Returning home to rest now was definitely impossible, so Han Fei decided to make do right here in the teahouse.
"Stay calm, the person you’re looking for will be brought here soon." Brother Snake, after all, was street-smart. He moved the Book of Changes from the table to prevent Wang Quan’s blood from splattering on it, "I won’t leave until your father is found, consider that my sincerity."
Brother Snake was willing to be a hostage himself. He had the male waiter drag away the two thugs Han Fei had disabled, and then he continued to drink tea and read.
Han Fei tore Wang Quan’s outer clothes to stuff in his mouth and tied him up next to him, then lay down in the corner to rest his eyes.
The private room in the teahouse became quiet, leaving only the sound of Wang Quan’s painful breathing.
Li Long and Li Hu thought Han Fei was incredibly bold. In such a situation, he still dared to sleep, and the brothers could only smile bitterly.
Brother Snake looked at Han Fei meaningfully, thinking that Han Fei was testing him in this manner.
"So young, yet so gutsy."
Han Fei was really too tired, he only meant to rest for a while, but as soon as he closed his eyes, sleepiness overwhelmed him, and he fell asleep instantly.
"Even if your heart stops beating, you can still live here forever..."
A vague voice suddenly sounded; it stood before Han Fei but was untouchable.
Han Fei tried to communicate with the figure, but found that he could not speak.
He looked around in panic, as if he were locked in a black box.
"If you become me, then you will stay here forever..."
A suffocating sensation came, and Han Fei felt the black box around him slowly shrinking, compressing his memories and soul.
The feeling was incredibly uncomfortable. Han Fei began to struggle desperately, but the more he struggled, the faster the box shrank, until finally, Han Fei’s body was squeezed out of shape, and his soul slowly transformed into something else.
After his body had completely changed, Han Fei realized that he had become a God Statue in the Shrine, his whole body wrapped in sin, with Blood Debt under his feet.
"A little change, a step-by-step slide into Hell, to ultimately become the Master of Shrine?"
The moment the suffocating feeling vanished, Han Fei also woke up. He suddenly opened his eyes, startling the nearby Wang Quan.
"I, I didn’t do anything!"
"Your breathing is too loud." Han Fei resisted the urge to kick him. He glanced at the clock on the wall, feeling it hadn’t been long, but in reality, he had been asleep for nearly four hours.
Hearing the noise, Li Long and Li Hu also woke up. The only one in the room who had been observing Han Fei the whole time was Brother Snake. In his life, he had seen many people, but someone like Han Fei was a first for him.
Noisy footsteps came from downstairs; moments later, two burly men dragged a foul-smelling middle-aged man upstairs.
"Brother Snake, we found him."
The door to the private room was pushed open, and the two burly men threw the middle-aged man onto the floor.
Upon seeing the man’s face, a nameless rage surged in Han Fei’s heart, as if a segment of memory in his brain was constantly urging him to kill this man.
Hatred could not simply describe that feeling; it was a pain that had drilled deep into the marrow.
"Did the original Master of Shrine hate his father this much? What exactly happened between them?"
The dream from earlier seemed like a hint, Han Fei felt the turning point was about to arrive.
The middle-aged man used to be timid, but his expression slowly changed upon seeing Han Fei, "Was it you who had them find me? You little beast, are you trying to kill your dad!"
Hearing the man’s voice, that bad memory in Han Fei’s brain was again triggered, his voice seemed drunk and laced with blood, and he seemed accustomed to swinging his fists whenever he spoke.
Han Fei’s body began to tremble slightly, surprised to find he was somewhat unable to suppress the memory in his mind.
"How intense is this hatred?"
The middle-aged man, not realizing the danger, moved his bluish wrists grabbed by Brother Snake’s men, wanting to curse Han Fei with something, but dared not, and in the end could only mutter quietly.
Seeing the man like this, Han Fei walked step by step to the man, trying hard to suppress his anger, squeezing the words through his teeth, "The money?"
"What money?"
"The money for my mom’s treatment."
"I’ve already told you I haven’t seen it! Why do you insist it was me who took it? The apartment building is so chaotic; it must have been those poor neighbors who stole it!" The man did not care about Han Fei’s opinion; he racked his brains for this excuse, seemingly just to fool Brother Snake and the burly men beside him.
Han Fei’s fingers uncontrollably began to clench, the nearby male waiter having seen Han Fei in action out of goodwill reminded the middle-aged man, "Just confess, to avoid suffering later."
"Gentlemen, you must be mistaken." The middle-aged man’s eyes darted, "Is it this kid who owes you a high-interest loan? He’s not paying back the debt, so he’s dragging me into this?"
The male waiter did not confirm, nor did he deny.
The middle-aged man panicked at this, "You little beast, who gave you the guts to borrow high-interest loans? It’s always son paying for father’s debt you unfilial thing, have you racked up the debt and now want your old man to pay it back?"
Han Fei’s hand clenched and then relaxed, he suppressed the anger brought by that memory, only repeating those two words, "The money?"
"You still dare to ask me for money? I’ve slaved away raising you all these years, you ingrate!" The middle-aged man dared not lash out at Brother Snake, so he vented all his grudge on Han Fei.
With hatred and anger intermingling in his mind, causing Han Fei’s mental state to drop, he took a deep breath, "I’m asking you one last time, where did you hide the donation money everyone gathered?"
"I didn’t take it! You little beast! How you’re just as troublesome as your mother..."
"Snap!"
The rage in his heart had already boiled over, and at the moment Han Fei stopped holding himself back, his leg swept directly toward the middle-aged man’s head.
With all his strength in that kick, the consequences would have been unthinkable if it had connected.
Han Fei had not anticipated how deeply the memories not his own would affect him.
To avoid creating an irreparable tragedy, Han Fei reacted at the last moment and swept his leg toward a wooden table next to the man.
Wood shavings flew past the man’s eyes as Han Fei broke the table leg, and his own shin began to bleed.
The private room fell silent instantly.
"That money was for her life-saving treatment, has your heart completely rotten?" Han Fei didn’t think before he spoke, words similar to those the Master of Shrine had once said.
The middle-aged man was startled, sitting on the ground, instinctively covering his face wounded by the wood, mumbling lowly, "Her illness is terminal; no amount of money would help. Rather than wasting it, it’s better to..."
Feeling Han Fei’s piercing gaze like a sharp knife, the middle-aged man dared not continue.
After a long time, knowing he couldn’t wrap things up, he finally relented, "A large portion of that money hasn’t been spent, I’ve hidden it away, I can take you to get it."
Looking at the middle-aged man crouched on the floor, observing his pitiful weakness, the foreign rage in Han Fei’s heart slowly settled, and even in such a moment, the Master of Shrine still regarded the other as a father. If possible, he wished his own father would correct his mistakes, he was also willing to give his father that chance.
Feeling the stretch of memory in his mind, Han Fei decided to respect the other’s choice, his gaze cold as he stared at the biological father of the Master of Shrine.
The man rose from the ground, covering his face, and dared not speak again; he silently walked out of the room.
The memory of the Master of Shrine influenced Han Fei, each time he woke up, the influence grew stronger, and Han Fei didn’t know if it was good or bad.
After the middle-aged man left the room, Han Fei didn’t move immediately; he sighed deeply, then walked over to Brother Snake.
"Why didn’t you leave with your father?"
"I didn’t see a trace of guilt or sorrow on his face." Han Fei turned to Wang Quan, "We held those madmen’s people, but four hours have passed and they haven’t come to reclaim them, which means they definitely have another plan. A plan that can lure me out of your territory, lower all my defenses, separate me from you."
"I thought just now that you had been overcome by anger."
"It’s precisely because I thought of that possibility that I am in even more pain," Han Fei’s eyes showed a trace of weariness.
"What are you guys talking about?" Li Hu was somewhat confused.
Li Long, however, started to catch on, "Those madmen have grown powerful, they might have kidnapped that man earlier to lead his own son out of the tea house!"
"That can’t be, right? Even a tiger won’t eat its cubs..." Li Hu’s face was full of surprise.
"This friend you’ve brought in is really something," Brother Snake picked up the teapot and poured a few times into the cup, but the pot was already empty.
"Since the tea is finished, let’s go together," Brother Snake knew in his heart, just like a clear mirror, that Master of Shrine’s father would not repay the debt. In this world, only a bigger scoundrel can truly understand another scoundrel.
Knocking on the table, Brother Snake, although very old, had not a hint of cloudiness in his eyes. His gaze was razor-sharp, "Gather all the able-bodied men, and follow them from a distance."
"Brother Snake? Are we sure we want to gather everyone?"
"Of course, I have been waiting for an opportunity, and now the timing is just right."
In the teahouse, the waiter quickly bandaged Han Fei’s leg, and then he took Li Long and Li Hu downstairs first.
After leaving the teahouse, the middle-aged man’s attitude improved a lot. He even took the initiative to ask about the condition of Master of Shrine’s mother, starting to sift through his extensive, painful, and desperate memories to share the few positive ones with Han Fei.
Everything seemed to be progressing in a good direction. The man said he was momentarily possessed, which was why he had made that decision. Once he returned, he would share the pressures of life with Han Fei.
The man painted a very rosy picture, which, for the current Master of Shrine, was already the best possible outcome.
Having taken out high-interest loans and accidentally committed murder, all the pressure was almost driving him mad, yet he could only bear it alone.
Although his father had a terrible personality and had made mistakes, in this situation, he desperately longed for someone to help him.
There were no excessive demands, only the slight hope to support himself.
With the simplest and most beautiful thoughts, Han Fei was led by the middle-aged man into an alley. They walked past a district about to be demolished, circled around for a long time until a small two-story building with white walls appeared in their sight.
This place seemed to have been a shop before, now abandoned.
"Are we there?"
"The West District is too chaotic. I don’t dare to keep most of the money on me. I can only hide it in a secluded place." The middle-aged man quickened his pace, leading Han Fei into the building. They eventually stopped at the entrance to the basement.
Although it was daytime, the basement was still pitch black, devoid of any light.
"I’ve hidden the money in the basement. Take out your phone to help light the way, and let’s go get the money together." The middle-aged man took the lead towards the basement, but after a few steps, he realized that Han Fei was still standing at the same spot, immovable.
"Hurry up!" The man became impatient, urging Han Fei, who was just staring at his face, examining every expression.
After a dozen seconds, Han Fei felt disappointed. He didn’t see a trace of remorse on the middle-aged man’s face.
"He just wanted you to help him get through tough times together. You made so many mistakes, yet he still wanted to forgive you, but you wouldn’t even give him this last chance." Han Fei looked into the dark basement passageway, "I can’t believe that the person who pushed him into the abyss was you."
"What are you talking about? The money is down there. I still have a lot left, enough to pay for your mother’s treatment." Seeing that Han Fei hadn’t moved for a long time, the middle-aged man became anxious. His speech sped up, and the sweat on his forehead dripped down to the tip of his nose.
"A person confined in a cage eventually turns into a beast, losing all kindness and obliterating all humanity. But if there’s a chance to remain human, who would want to become a beast?"
Han Fei clearly remembered the requirements of the Beast Trapping task—do not get locked in a lightless basement.
The pitch-dark basement in front of him was the cage that turned Master of Shrine into a trapped beast and marked the real beginning of his downfall and madness.
