Chapter 410: We Speak for You
Chapter 410: Chapter 410: We Speak for You
There are some people who are born to be actors, not because of their acting, but because of their experiences.
After the Spider, played by Han Fei, killed everyone, when the audience realized that he was the real killer, they didn’t harbor any hatred or disgust towards the antagonist; instead, their hearts were occupied by a complex mix of emotions.
The Spider was a murderer who had personally killed eight versions of himself, but the most contradictory part was that all his killings and cruelty were for the sake of overall redemption.
Han Fei displayed all this vividly through his acting. At the last moment of the film, as the Spider walked out of the Meat Factory Building for Family, it seemed as if the audience’s hearts were also purified.
Over the years, Director Zhang had made many films, yet it had been a long time since he felt so deeply moved by his own work. But at the end of "Mystery Novelist," he kept staring at the screen, silently watching for a long time.
Perfect, in the truest sense of the word.
The role of the Spider seemed as if it was made uniquely for Han Fei, and no one else could have played it.
Director Zhang didn’t offer any critique, not because it wasn’t good, but because he felt he couldn’t judge it.
Han Fei’s understanding of the Spider surpassed anyone else on set, and after Han Fei got into character, Director Zhang even dared not casually call cut, fearing his suggestions would disrupt Han Fei’s flow of thoughts.
For a young actor in his twenties to achieve this was truly unprecedented.
The switch for master-level acting hadn’t been turned on in his mind; after Han Fei entered the role, he was playing the Spider, but he was also playing himself.
So, when the Spider had completed his redemption and finally walked out of his nightmare, Han Fei’s heart was also touched.
If one day the dark night of the Deep World were dispelled, then the first ray of morning light on the Deep World would surely fall on Han Fei.
With such a conviction, Han Fei reached an unexpected sublimation at the end of the plot.
There was no speech, no action, just the way he walked out of the darkness was enough to move everyone.
"It turns out there really are people born to act," Bai Xian, who had been nominated for Movie Emperor, said quietly as he watched Han Fei.
He was the lead actor in this film, but in the end, it was Han Fei who had killed him, making him seem more like a supporting character with a lot of scenes.
In fact, it wouldn’t be precise to say that. Not just Bai Xian, but the other eight actors in the film all seemed like supporting characters.
"Cut!"
After shooting the last scene, Director Zhang stood up immediately and walked quickly to Han Fei. For a moment, he was so excited that he couldn’t speak.
Initially, he had serendipitously seen Han Fei in "Twin Flowers," where he played dual roles with exquisite skill, which led him to want Han Fei for the complex role of the Spider.
He hadn’t had high expectations for Han Fei at first, merely hoping that Han Fei wouldn’t mess up and affect the whole show.
But as the shooting progressed, Han Fei turned this most complex character into the highlight of the entire show.
"Han Fei, you are the most talented actor I’ve seen in all these years, truly amazing." Director Zhang rarely praised anyone, especially as he aged, he generally appeared rigid and stern to most people, but on this day, he directly and openly complimented Han Fei in front of the entire crew.
At the commendation of Director Zhang and the on-site crew, Han Fei merely responded with a shy smile, not feeling he had done anything particularly remarkable.
Upon returning to the dressing room, Han Fei was just about to change out of his costume, remove his makeup, and head home to play video games, when a staff member rushed over asking him to shoot promotional posters and photos.
Since Director Zhang wanted to submit "Mystery Novelist" to this year’s film festival, all subsequent work was also rushing forward: right as Han Fei finished shooting the final scene, the promotions team kicked into full gear, preparing for the upcoming festival and release.
Just as "Mystery Novelist" began its intense promotion, a different voice suddenly emerged online, claiming Han Fei gained popularity by exploiting a real-life crime, achieving fame by recreating it in film, having everything while only leaving sadness and pain to the victims’ families; watching his films was like repeatedly tearing open the wounds of the victims’ families.
At first, no one paid attention to this seemingly absurd claim until, on the country’s largest social media platform, someone posted a lengthy article and video speaking on behalf of the victims’ families, directly confronting Han Fei, and wishing he would show some humanity and stop repeatedly hurting the victims’ families for his own financial gain.
This post bizarrely became popular at an alarming rate among millions of daily messages on the platform and began to be widely shared and read.
By the time Han Fei had finished shooting the promotional video and posters, that video had already appeared on trending searches and on the front pages of certain websites, and most bizarrely, the search popularity of that video and blog post always hung together with "Mystery Novelist."
Their search volumes rose simultaneously, from being thirty-seventh and thirty-sixth at first to fifteenth and fourteenth respectively.
It was clear that someone was manipulating things behind the scenes, taking advantage of the promotion of "Mystery Novelist" to specifically target Han Fei and the film.
Han Fei was completely unaware of this issue; he had changed clothes and was in a hurry to go home and play games, but he was stopped by the crew.
Everyone meant no harm; they just wanted Han Fei to stay calm, not to get angry, which confused him even more.
Later, when Director Zhang arrived, he was informed about the situation online.
"It’s obvious that an organized professional team is behind this, probably ’old pals’ from within my circle wanting to sabotage the release of ’Mystery Novelist,’" Director Zhang, who had lived through many ups and downs, noticed the issue right away: "I’m sorry, Han Fei, for dragging you into this. Those guys must be targeting me, but they focused on you because you don’t have a company backing you."
Han Fei was alone, without an agent, without a company, nobody spending money to boost his searches, and no one to remove those unfavorable comments for him.
If someone wanted to attack "Mystery Novelist," Han Fei was indeed the easiest target.
Everyone treated him like a soft persimmon that could easily be squished, only he didn’t see it that way.
"These people definitely planned this long ago. They position themselves from the perspective of the victims’ families, putting themselves in a disadvantaged position to trigger sympathy from the online community. Regardless of whether you did something wrong, the issue of them being victims’ families remains unchanged, and you did indeed gain fame by acting in a murder movie. These two unfactual facts make it difficult for us," Director Zhang’s assistant spoke up, experienced in crisis management.
"’Mystery Novelist’ began its massive promotion, and they chose this time to break the story, taking advantage of our popularity to accelerate the spread of information. These people are completely unscrupulous."
While the crew discussed the issue, Han Fei kept staring at the lengthy article and the edited video.
The video began with several victims’ family members, whose faces were obscured as if in an interview, crying about their pain and misfortune, and slowly their topic shifted toward Han Fei, expressing their discomfort with their family’s stories being turned into movies, not wanting others to witness their inner anguish.
Han Fei actually understood these words; he had already been in contact with each of the victims’ families when he shot "Twin Flowers."
To be honest, when he filmed "Twin Flowers," he was also risking his life from a potential "Butterfly" attack, and part of the reason for making the film was to rally everyone to capture "Butterfly."
All his decisions had been approved by the families of the victims, and there was absolutely no issue of forced filming.
The latter half of the video also featured several family members of the victims, who were unable to stop crying as they seemed to recall the most painful events.
Among them were the father of Wei Youfu, some family members of the "Human-body Puzzle" victims, and others who had been helped by Han Fei.
"Old Master Wei could never do such a thing," declared Han Fei after watching the video, "I understand their tactics now. The first half of the video features hired people pretending to be victims’ families to attack me, followed by genuine interviews with the victims’ families to confuse the viewers."
By this point, a chill had emerged in Han Fei’s eyes.
The ones truly exploiting the victims’ families’ pain were those who released the video.
The ones truly tearing at the hearts of the victims’ families were also them!
"To ruin me, they don’t care about the pain the victims’ families endure. These beasts really stop at nothing," Han Fei muttered, staring at his phone screen, when suddenly a call came through. He paused for a moment upon seeing the caller ID before answering.
"Han Fei! That video was deliberately made! A few days ago, someone came to interview us; they wanted us to oppose you, but we refused, so they cut the interview footage to make that video!" came the voices of Wei Youfu’s father and several other victim families over the phone.
Han Fei had assisted the police in catching the murderers of their loved ones; they only felt grateful toward Han Fei, so how could they possibly oppose him?
"Old Master, calm down, this is not a big deal, just let me handle it," Han Fei spoke calmly, which surprised Director Zhang and other staff members. What Han Fei was facing was no trivial matter; a misstep could end his acting career.
"Health comes first, just rest at home and don’t let these messy things affect your mood," Han Fei, holding the phone, was actually comforting the victim families, despite being himself in the center of the storm and still caring for their feelings.
Faint crying could be heard on the other end of the phone, a family member of a "Human-body Puzzle" victim felt used; she had always been grateful to Han Fei, yet her sorrowful crying had been edited by sinister individuals into an accusation against Han Fei.
"Han Fei, during the time the ’Human-body Puzzle’ case was being solved, you were so busy; in my heart, you are just like my own child. I won’t accept those demon and monsters bullying you, none of us will!" Wei Youfu’s father, firm in his voice, too old to navigate the internet complexities, had reached out to other victim families, and together they were figuring out what to do.
The voice in Han Fei’s phone was audible to the staff on the scene, and now everyone finally understood what kind of person Han Fei really was.
Those repeated life-threatening situations, aiding the police in solving murders, were not merely about simple ceremonial honors but deeply related to real people, their families, and everything about them.
"It’s really nothing, put your minds at ease, I have plenty of ways to deal with those devils."
After hanging up, a barely perceptible change occurred in Han Fei’s voice. How others dealt with him was one thing, but to target him by dragging innocents into it, using the despair of innocents to kin another innocent, how was this different from the "Butterfly"?
The trending searches were still climbing. Han Fei watched the edited video and said word by word, "They’ve gone a bit too far."
"This is more than just overstepping! To exploit even the victims’ families, absolutely inhumane!" Director Zhang’s assistant burst out.
"They haven’t found the real victim families to oppose, so there’s still a chance, I’ll go talk to the investors now." Director Zhang, unlike Director Jiang who was shooting "Twin Flowers," was a veteran director in the industry, and many gave him face.
"Yes, they probably didn’t expect the victim families to stand completely with Han Fei. Hiring people to impersonate victims is their oversight," Bai Xian also came over, a senior in the film industry who greatly valued Han Fei and decided to lend Han Fei a hand.
"Han Fei, let us handle this matter; don’t be impulsive," after saying this, Director Zhang hurriedly left. In his eyes, Han Fei was entirely a victim, and given the large scale of the opposition, obviously intent on sabotaging "Mystery Novelist," he was more concerned than anyone.
Many actors from "Mystery Novelist" stood by Han Fei, whether it was for fairness and justice or for their own futures, they all had to find ways to ensure the survival of "Mystery Novelist".
Walking to a corner, Han Fei took out his phone and dialed Jin Jun’s number again.
Jin Jun was also investigating the issue concerning Han Fei. He assured Han Fei that he would respond by ten o’clock that evening.
The search hits for "Mystery Novelist" and the victims’ families kept rising, and Han Fei’s social media account turned into a turbulent haze of insults and attacks that were nearly overwhelming, enough to make someone’s blood pressure soar.
At this moment, anyone who spoke out for Han Fei was attacked and torn apart. It seemed that Han Fei might never be able to turn things around.
Around eight in the evening, an elderly man with white hair posted a video from the hospital. He was beside his bedridden wife and his newly-awakened grandson, disclosed his personal information directly, and then spoke of the help Han Fei had offered his family.
This person was Laisheng’s grandfather.
Not many people watched the video, and below it there were still numerous accounts insulting and attacking.
But before long, a high school student used his teacher’s phone to post another video from school, where he described all the encouragement and comfort Han Fei had given him. Han Fei had changed his life.
This person was Qu Yun’s child.
In an old, dilapidated house, a neatly dressed elderly man gathered all his documents and stood beside his child’s memorial photo. He identified himself as one of the victims’ family members from the video. He mentioned that every time he thought of his child, he would collapse in pain, but he still chose to step forward to tell the truth.
Not for any other reason but because he knew Han Fei was someone else’s child too, who would feel grief and despair, and also suffer anguish.
A person who bravely faced death for the sake of others should not receive unfair treatment!
This person was Old Master Wei, Wei Youfu’s father.
One after another, the family members of the victims whom Han Fei had helped came forward. They endured the pain of their past memories and firmly stood by Han Fei.
The voice of one person is weak, but when their voices came together, it was enough to touch everyone’s heart.
Xinhu Police also made an announcement around eight o’clock. They didn’t speak for Han Fei or take sides, but from a standpoint of fairness, they made public all the donations to the victims’ families that Han Fei had arranged through the police.
Acting fees, rewards, not a penny spared. Before the event even took place, Han Fei had already donated all of it to the victims’ families.
Risking his life alone in search of the truth, defending the justice in his heart, and after surviving a brush with death, he quietly gave all his earnings to those victim’s families who were in greater need.
How could there be such a gentle person in the world?
If it weren’t for the doctored videos and malicious slander, none of Han Fei’s deeds would have been discovered.
Gradually, the voices cursing Han Fei seemed to lose their confidence, and more and more people stood with Han Fei.
