Chapter 400: Chapter 400 Underworld Human Resources Director

The Butterfly’s wardrobe was a very special cursed item, it and the butterfly were one and the same, engraved with all the nightmares of the butterfly, bearing all its pain.

It was both the butterfly’s only home and its atrium. It was for this reason that after the butterfly entered the Deep World, Wardrobe No. 4444 accidentally gained the ability to connect nightmares with the Deep World.

Now, with the butterfly’s consciousness dissipated, its wardrobe shattered, and the main channel destroyed, the other wardrobes gradually became different, the original curse taking on some mysterious changes that no one could clearly explain.

Han Fei and the Death Building Owners had guessed before that someone might enter the Deep World through the wardrobe, but no one had expected that "lucky one" to come so quickly.

"It’s alright, we can take the opportunity to study him and see what kind of person is most likely to come here, to prepare for the future," he said.

Han Fei and the butterfly were completely different people. If the butterfly found someone entering by accident, it would probably decide based on the soul’s quality whether to slowly play them to death or to eat them directly; Han Fei was different, he wanted to summarize the possible patterns, then save them.

Now the air in Room 4044 had solidified, and anyone logging into the game would be afraid of being watched by so many grudges. To ease the atmosphere slightly, Han Fei decided to ask the Death Building Owners to leave first.

He had no grudge against that lucky one and saw no need to go all-out from the start. What if he scared the person into some sort of affliction right away?

Everything had a process, like getting to know each other first, and then deciding to kill or to bury.

Han Fei sent a message in the death group chat, instructing the fierce ghosts outside the room to make some noise.

When the funeral music began, Han Fei signaled the other owners to leave.

All the grudges that were originally focused on the wardrobe seemed suddenly attracted by something else. They did not approach to open the wardrobe but instead headed outside.

Mingling among them, Han Fei also went outside. "Wait for me to figure out the situation with that person, then we’ll go to Ancestral Hall Street together."

Quietly donning the beast-faced mask he had obtained from Beast Alley, Han Fei, standing in the darkness, whispered some words to Yinglong and then flipped the switch for his master-level acting in his brain.

After a while, when the funeral music stopped, Han Fei pretended to rush over from a distant corridor.

He gently pushed open the door to Room 4044, and at that moment, footsteps suddenly sounded in the hallway again.

Frantic, he looked for a place to hide and finally saw the wardrobe at the entrance. After hesitating for a moment, he pulled open the wardrobe door, ready to hide inside.

When the wardrobe was opened, Zheng Haicheng inside met Han Fei’s eyes, and he saw shock in the eyes beneath Han Fei’s mask.

"I..." Zheng Haicheng had no idea what to say in the current situation, as compared to the countless ghosts and monsters before, Han Fei’s oppressive presence wasn’t as intense, and added to that, Han Fei seemed also to be seeking a hiding spot, which gave off a familiar underworld vibe.

"Don’t speak, be careful not to attract something bad!" Han Fei altered his voice, harsh and gloomy, he entered the wardrobe and hid alongside Zheng Haicheng.

When closing the wardrobe door, Han Fei inadvertently touched Zheng Haicheng’s shoulder, and in that instant, he saw the player information of the other party.

"Name: Zheng Haicheng."

"Level 1, Brain Power seven, Physical Strength four, Luck one, Charm seven, Mental Threshold ten, Life Value one hundred."

"Hidden Talent one, Sleepwalking (E grade Talent): A very rare talent, whose specific effects need to be explored by oneself."

"Hidden Talent two, Dark Fate (E grade Talent): You have grown up in a family of psychics and have somehow developed a connection with them."

Having clarified the other person’s information, Han Fei felt a sense of understanding. He and Zheng Haicheng hid side by side in the wardrobe, neither daring to speak.

Listening to the quickening heartbeat in the chest of the man next to him due to nervousness, Zheng Haicheng felt less panicked than at the beginning. He stole a glance at Han Fei and noticed that the edges of Han Fei’s face mask were already soaked with sweat.

"He must be scared too, right?"

When one person is scared, they are genuinely scared. When two people are scared, at least there’s someone to lean on.

After the footsteps outside the door had faded, the two players in the wardrobe simultaneously let out a sigh of relief. Neither dared to go out and just stood side by side like that.

"Um... hello, I wanted to ask, are you a player? Is this place ’Perfect Life’?" Zheng Haicheng asked timidly, afraid that Han Fei might do something irrational, very politely: "I don’t mean anything by it, just a bit doubtful if I logged into the wrong game."

"I am a player, and this is Perfect Life." Han Fei said truthfully, wiping the moisture off the edge of his mask and turning to look at Zheng Haicheng: "I didn’t expect to encounter a second player in the hidden map. Which gaming studio are you from? What’s your number on the internal tester leaderboard?"

"Hidden map? Gaming studio? Internal tester number?" Zheng Haicheng was baffled by the questions; it seemed like his image had been suddenly elevated: "Are you mistaken about something? I just logged into the game, I know nothing, I chose a random spawn location, and as soon as I opened the door, I was here."

Zheng Haicheng was on the verge of tears, unable to bear the gap between reality and his expectations.

"A rookie player? Impossible!" Han Fei stated decisively: "To enter this hidden map, one must meet several requirements: Brain Power and Charm no less than seven, not too high Luck Value, and must possess hidden Talents related to dreams or spiritual abilities. It took the gaming studio I’m with several months and hundreds of attempts by many people before I was the only one to succeed."

Seeing that Han Fei was completely unconvinced, Zheng Haicheng wished he could willingly show his attribute panel, but a player’s Hidden Attributes and Hidden Talents can only be seen by themselves and cannot be made public.

With a wry smile on his face, Zheng Haicheng didn’t know whether he was lucky or unlucky: "The requirements you spoke of, it seems I meet all of them..."

"Are you lying to me?"

"Truly!" To prove he wasn’t lying, Zheng Haicheng read out his Attributes and Talents from his attribute panel to Han Fei, this straightforward action earned him a bit of Han Fei’s favor.

"Sleepwalking? Dark Fate? There are such strange Talents?" Han Fei’s tone alone conveyed a sense of being slightly shaken and skeptical.

"I swear, I absolutely did not lie to you." Zheng Haicheng clung to Han Fei like a lifesaver, mainly because what Han Fei had said made him believe that Han Fei was very powerful, a veteran of multiple internal tests: "Big brother, can you tell me how to leave this place? If you help me get out, I’ll follow your lead from now on."

"Leave? Do you know how many people are dreaming of getting in here but can’t? Go look up the information about the hidden map on the official website." Han Fei’s voice carried disbelief: "Sitting on a gold mine, and you actually want to turn around and leave?"

"It’s mainly because this place doesn’t quite seem like where people should stay..."

"If you’re able to come in, cherish this opportunity well," Han Fei lowered his voice, "In Perfect Life there are various deep gameplay experiences, and those experiences require a very high level of a certain attribute in players. However, this attribute is determined by the players’ own consciousness and not a single game item can raise that attribute."

The devil was whispering, and Satan took out the apple that tempted Adam.

"What attribute?"

"Mental Threshold."

It was as if Han Fei’s voice contained some special magic, and his tone gradually changed from before, "Only in the hidden maps of Perfect Life can you raise the maximum of your Mental Threshold. Initially, this attribute might not seem important, but as the game progresses, you’ll discover that this attribute will determine the world you see."

Zheng Haicheng’s eyes slowly widened, drawn to what Han Fei described.

In his view, Han Fei was a professional player who had participated in several closed tests and possessed extremely secret information. By incredible luck, he unexpectedly received a chance to change his fate.

The game Perfect Life would influence an entire era, and professional players could also make a fortune off it.

Zheng Haicheng’s initial purpose for entering the game remained unchanged; indeed, it was for healing and relaxation. But if there was an opportunity to make big money while relaxing, who would refuse?

The problem now was that getting rich and dying suddenly seemed separated by only a thin line.

"The hidden map has a time limit. After staying for twenty-four hours, even if you don’t want to leave, you’ll be forced out, so cherish your time here," Han Fei’s Soul-returning Talent could only be used once a day, hence the twenty-four-hour stipulation.

"Big brother, what exactly do I need to do?" Zheng Haicheng was now very reliant on Han Fei.

"You only need to remember two things. First, follow your heart in every choice you make; kill if you must kill, save if you must save. Second, don’t ever leave this building, no matter what happens, don’t step out of it."

After giving these two pieces of advice, Han Fei quietly pushed open the cabinet door, "Use all your wisdom and ability, live to the fullest in this building, don’t disguise your true self, only then will you have unexpected gains."

Han Fei left the cabinet and when Zheng Haicheng was still pondering his words, he had already left room 4044.

"Crap! Big Brother! Where are you going?"

Zheng Haicheng didn’t dare to chase after him; he remained in the cabinet, conflicted.

Han Fei, who had left the fourth floor, found Feng Ziyu, deciding to put Zheng Haicheng through a series of tests just like the challenges Han Fei encountered when he switched professions to Midnight Butcher in Beast Alley.

If Zheng Haicheng proved to be a very good person in all aspects, then he would consider giving Zheng Haicheng more opportunities and rewards. Not to mention anything else, just taking out one of the hundreds of real estate deeds that Huang Ying got would be an unimaginable reward for an ordinary newbie player.

Of course, all this hinged on whether Zheng Haicheng could pass through the incessant challenges, and if he did not, or if he harbored malice within him, then what awaited him would be cursed by the ’Big Evil’s’ Hidden Talent.

Han Fei left the specifics to Feng Ziyu to handle. He had been involved in the production of Perfect Life and was one of the game’s mission testers, so he was very familiar with all kinds of missions.

Designing test missions and monitoring player statuses was exactly Feng Ziyu’s job.

"Don’t entirely think of yourself as a mission designer, you need to consider this from a human perspective, look at players as if you’re conducting an interview, find their bright spots and root out their hidden malice."

After his conversation with Feng Ziyu, Han Fei headed to Ancestral Hall Street, taking with him the most top-tier power from Death Building and Happiness Residental Community.

Zheng Haicheng’s arrival signified a new beginning, making Han Fei truly feel like a game manager.

However, securing his position as a manager would require strong power.

Having completed a G-level task on the way, Han Fei, now able to exit the game, walked at the very front of everyone.

He wore a beast-faced mask, had changed into a clean set of clothes, and held a Spiritual Altar in his arms.

Exiting Death Building area and following the rundown street, Han Fei slowly approached the outermost area of the Death Building Area.

Because of the presence of the butterfly, the number of ghosts and monsters in the outer area wasn’t high, but now the periphery streets had many odd things.

Some were the souls of the deceased, others clearly had strange bloodlines running through them as if controlled or parasitized by something.

Besides grudges and regrets, some monsters that Han Fei had never seen before were also approaching and slowly entering the Death Building Area, giving him a sense of crisis.

With the butterfly dead and the strongest spider in the Death Building Area gone, Little Eight wounded and not yet healed, the only one who could counteract hatred was the Building-jumping Ghost, Zhuang Wen.

Han Fei glanced at Zhuang Wen next to him. Her condition was still extremely unstable. If she truly fought against hatred, she probably wouldn’t last long before the Hatred Black Fire inside her drove her mad.

Normally, transformation would be completed in the black fire, but Zhuang Wen clearly failed under the butterfly’s interference. The Old Ghost had a good chance, but he sacrificed himself and his family to slay the butterfly and ultimately entered the Rebirth Saber.

Clutching the hilt of the saber, Han Fei felt a heavy burden on his shoulders and promised himself that given the chance, he would bring hope of rebirth to all the souls inside the Rebirth Saber.

Step by step moving forward, the eerie sounds of Divine Music gradually filled his ears, and Han Fei looked up to see a sinister Divine Temple at the corner of the street.

The temple was small, resembling a repurposed newsstand. Its windows and doors were covered with a variety of odd talisman papers, and there were some unpainted, unfinished god statues placed at the entrance.

"Is this Ancestral Hall Street?" Remembering Gesheng’s location in his mind, Han Fei, holding the Spiritual Altar, walked inside.

Just as he stepped onto Ancestral Hall Street, the system’s prompt sounded in his ear.

"Player number 0000, please note! You have successfully triggered an F-level hidden mission—Ancestral Hall Street."

"Ancestral Hall Street (F-level Hidden Mission): If you see abandoned god statues on the street, do not casually approach them, let alone take them home. It’s best to leave immediately because if you linger too long, the thing inside the statue might follow you forever."
