Chapter 394: Top Player Huang Ying

Chapter 394: Chapter 394: Top Player Huang Ying

It was very laborious for Han Fei to remove the game helmet, as he opened the door of the game box. His hands and shoulders involuntarily shivered, and every now and then a piercing pain shot through the back of his head.

Climbing out of the game box, Han Fei clutched his chest. He was somewhat unable to adjust to the real world, his vision still tinted with traces of blood-red.

Continuously offering himself mental suggestions, Han Fei barely managed to stand up and pulled open the curtains.

The light of the early sun shone on him, and only then did the influences of the Deep World truly vanish, since sunlight was forever absent there.

"It’s good to be alive."

At the end of the city, a virtual screen that connected heaven and earth stood prominently, with the number "2" notably conspicuous on it. The official beta test for "Perfect Life" was drawing ever closer.

"I’ve killed the butterfly in the Death Building. I wonder if the people in reality who were affected by it will suddenly come to their senses." The butterfly is a ghost in nightmares, influencing many in reality, like Meng Chang’an, or Teacher Ma from Yimin Private Academy. There must be many more mesmerized by the butterfly like them.

Moving his body a little, the pain in Han Fei’s body had not yet subsided, and he felt a strong hunger.

Opening the fridge, Han Fei quickly heated up some of the food he had stored and ate as if he were still in the Deep World.

He was very surprised to find that his appetite had greatly increased, swallowing seemed to give him a sense of pleasure, and his digestion seemed enhanced as well.

"Why do I always feel like eating meat?"

To prevent any surprises, Han Fei had stocked a week’s worth of food in the fridge, but he had already consumed a large part of it in one meal.

"It feels like my physical condition has improved compared to before. If I encounter an escapee again, I guess he won’t be able to escape from my hands."

After eating, the pain in the back of his head also diminished significantly, and Han Fei immediately took out his phone and dialed Li Xue’s number.

"Sister Li, did you catch the butterfly last night?"

Li Xue must have been up all night, her voice was hoarse and carried a hint of weariness, "You guessed right previously. Last night was probably the butterfly’s final frenzy. We arrested seventeen suspects related to the butterfly. Their identities and professions varied, and nine of them had butterfly tattoos. The department is currently interrogating them."

"Seventeen arrested? Is the butterfly among them?"

"I can’t be sure. All the suspects with butterfly tattoos chose to seek death after realizing they couldn’t escape, almost as if they had been hypnotized." Li Xue told Han Fei within the limits allowed by the rules, "After interrogating some of the suspects, we found out they didn’t know each other or even of each other’s existence. They acted on the same day because they heard a voice in their nightmares."

"A voice in their nightmares?"

"We now suspect that the butterfly’s real identity is a hypnotist. Even if not a hypnotist, they must be involved in work related to the human brain area. They understand the human psyche very well and use nightmares to subtly influence people. All the criminals we caught had experienced similar nightmares." The direction of the police investigation had become very clear, and uncovering the truth seemed a matter of time, though Han Fei was not overly optimistic.

Zhuang Zhou dreamt of a butterfly, the butterfly may just be the beginning of seeing another world.

For most ordinary people in Xinhu, last night was just a normal night, unaware of the events that transpired in the dark, nor of the repercussions those events brought.

"The butterfly’s targets last night included you and Huang Ying, among several other places, like the research center of Deep Space Technology, the Xinhu Cremation Management Office, the Xinhu Fourth People’s Hospital, and so on. We are now closely monitoring these places, trying to figure out their connection. If you have any good ideas or suggestions, feel free to tell me." Li Xue felt that Han Fei had an extraordinary intuition which greatly aided in solving the case.

"Before we bring the butterfly to justice, I will fully cooperate with you, but I also hope you can ensure my safety."

Han Fei hung up the phone with Li Xue and then called Huang Ying.

The phone rang only once before Huang Ying answered, "Han Fei? Did you encounter any danger on your side?"

Hearing Huang Ying’s voice, Han Fei breathed a sigh of relief, "The butterfly that has been tormenting us in nightmares died in its own nightmare last night. Brother Huang, shall we start looking forward now?"

"Looking forward?"

"It’s unclear over the phone, let’s talk after we meet. Also, I have another new member to introduce to you." After making his plans, Han Fei quickly washed up and left his home.

First, he went to the residence of the reporter Jin Jun, found the tearful Zhuang Ren, then together they hurried to the Smart New City.

Due to the fire and unrest in the Smart District the previous night, the police set up checkpoints everywhere. Han Fei was able to enter the Smart District smoothly with the help of Li Xue.

When Han Fei and Zhuang Ren arrived upstairs at the Street Corner Cafe, managed by Huang Ying, he had been waiting for them for quite some time.

"Is this the new member?" Huang Ying, who seemed not to have rested properly for several days, looked quite pale.

"His name is Zhuang Ren, a well-known horror film director. He grew up in the same district as the Chairman of Eternal Life Pharmaceutical," Han Fei introduced as he gestured for Zhuang Ren to sit next to Huang Ying. "The Chairman of Eternal Life Pharmaceutical once gave Zhuang Ren something, it seems like he implanted some of his own memories into Zhuang Ren’s head."

"Memory transplant? Can Eternal Life Pharmaceutical’s technology really do that?" Huang Ying didn’t dare underestimate Zhuang Ren, knowing that to be personally invited by Han Fei, he must be remarkable.

"It’s probably more complex than you think. I came here today to introduce you two. Later, in ’Perfect Life’, there will probably be many issues that you two will need to handle," Han Fei said seriously, standing in front of them.

"The two of us?" Huang Ying and Zhuang Ren were both very surprised.

"The day after tomorrow at midnight, ’Perfect Life’ will begin its public test. With so many players logging in, there might be one or two lucky ones who, for various reasons, enter our region. To prevent any accidents, we must prepare in advance, whether in the game’s Shallow or Deep World." Han Fei revealed his plan. "For now, Zhuang Ren will be unable to log into the regular ’Perfect Life’ game, so he’ll handle some real-world tasks..."

"I have a question." Huang Ying didn’t hide his concerns and asked, "Can this gentleman be trusted?"

"His daughter is trapped in that world, helping us is helping himself." Han Fei possessed the soul-summoning skill, but could not use it frequently as it was limited, thus he decided to bring Zhuang Ren on board not only to reunite him with his family but also to have him handle some tasks.

"So, what do I need to do?" Huang Ying perked up, listening intently.

"Your responsibility is the greatest," Han Fei said, looking grave. "I need you to compete with hundreds of millions of players to become the number-one player in ’Perfect Life’."

"The, the number-one player?"

"The strongest, the most powerful, the most influential, the player who can even alter the main storyline!"

"I really can’t do that!" Huang Ying waved his hands dismissively. "I’m just an ordinary casual player. Look at the internal test; I spent my days decorating my house and farming. The most outrageous thing I did was invite a hospital nurse to watch a movie at my house, and before she could come, you took me away."

"You defeated the Butterfly, what on earth can’t you do? I too was once just an ordinary casual player, look at me now?" Han Fei cited himself as an example—other security guards were striving to maintain good relations with the owners, while Han Fei was almost being elected as the new manager of the survivors’ district.

"A person never knows how excellent they can be unless pushed."

"The problem is I really can’t do it!" Huang Ying said with a mournful look. "Competing with a hundred people is doable, but competing with a hundred million is just out of the question."

"Don’t worry, I stand behind you, ready to use the power of an entire world to help you," Han Fei said as he opened the two sides of the black box. He had chosen the hardest path, so he needed to seize the discourse power of the Shallow World quickly. Should a passage between the Shallow and Deep World emerge or other anomalies occur, he had to respond immediately.

"The public test of ’Perfect Life’ might herald the arrival of a new era, no one knows whether it will be good or bad. All we can do is try to make everything better."

Moved by emotion, enlightened by reason, Han Fei finally persuaded Huang Ying.

"Alright, I will do my best."

"Since you’ve agreed, let’s start preparing tonight." Han Fei shared his checklist with Huang Ying, instructing him to use the last hours before the game launches to transport useful items into the Deep World from various angles.

"No problem."

"One more thing, I remember you mentioning that the first event after the public test of ’Perfect Life’ is related to the Happiness Sense?" Han Fei recalled the internal information Huang Ying had previously told him.

"It seems... yes." Huang Ying felt an ominous premonition.

"I will send you into that night twelve hours before the server opens to help lower your Happiness Sense as much as possible. From the moment the first leaderboard appears, we need to dominate it," Han Fei revealed his real purpose. "You have to turn our early lead in the game into an unshakable advantage."

"Do we really have to do this... I mean, my Happiness Sense has been pretty low lately, and I feel like I’ve become immune to despair and fear." Huang Ying tried to convince Han Fei, "Also, I’ve been having nightmares recently, and I’ve become much braver; frights probably can’t lower my Happiness Sense anymore. Yeah, that’s the situation."

"No worries, I recently learned a new skill called ’Curse Word’, which can significantly lower a person’s resistances. The weaker the cursed, the more obvious the effect."

"Curse, curse?"

"Don’t worry, I’ll be careful with it." Han Fei signaled to Huang Ying not to be too afraid. "Leave the dirty and tiring tasks to me; you just focus on earning others’ admiration, although the process might be a bit painful."
