Chapter 381: The Boy in the Fourth Sublevel
Chapter 381: Chapter 381: The Boy in the Fourth Sublevel
"I suggest you’d better stay in the elevator and don’t move; outside might be a different world from the one inside the elevator."
The male student Yanzu stood in the corner of the elevator. His screen name was Yanzu Xinhu Branch, but his real name was Li Yanzu, a very introverted child.
He rarely spoke, and the reason he became more talkative after running into Han Fei was purely because if he kept silent any longer, his soul would scatter. The man before him seemed like the natural child of disaster. They had met for less than half an hour, and now the entire Building 4 was trembling, as though it would collapse at any moment.
"We came to the basement not to take refuge, but to find out the root cause of why the Death Building has become like this." All the Soul Chasers had taken the elevator up from the basement, but Han Fei did the opposite; amid the chaos in the building, he took the elevator down to the basement.
"Previously, a group member had entered the basement; let him persuade you." Yanzu opened the chat group and had one of them privately message Han Fei. That person’s ID was also very familiar to Han Fei.
"Fish Drinking Water initiated a video call!"
Fish Drinking Water: "I’m hiding in an urn now, and the lighting is pretty dim. Just make do with listening to me."
Fish Drinking Water: "There has always been a tradition of soul-summoning in the Death Building. Every few days, soul-summoning occurs, and on every fourth day of the month too. One day, I was very curious about where exactly those souls were coming from. On April 4th of last year, I secretly followed a Soul Chaser to the basement and discovered something terrifying."
"The Manager is exploiting the obsessions of the fierce ghosts in the building. He weaves and knots ropes made of the living’s yearnings and the dead’s obsessions deep within nightmares and then lets the dead summon souls and the living enter dreams, ultimately completing what’s known as soul-summoning."
"With such soul-summoning, we, the deceased, can indeed see the living’s figures, but by dawn, all living souls will have vanished. Where do you think those souls have gone?"
Li Yanzu: "To the basement?"
Fish Drinking Water: "Exactly, except for a very small number of strong residents, like the Old Ghost in 4234, all other souls summoned by the owners have been imprisoned by the Manager in the basement. He’s tampered with these souls, seemingly using them to cultivate something."
"So, are living people who have lost their souls likely to die in the real world?" Han Fei was somewhat confused.
"It would be better if they died, but it’s worse if they lose their souls and don’t die. Do you think his body still contains the original person?" The words of Fish Drinking Water made Han Fei think of his Soul-returning Talent. One of the uses of the Soul-returning Talent was to kill the summoned soul and then infuse his own consciousness into the other’s shell. This ability was so eerie that Han Fei had never used it till now.
Fish Drinking Water: "The Manager’s ability is related to nightmares. His ability can, through some method, bring the living’s souls into the Death Building, but there are significant limitations. Just looking at the arrangements in the Death Building, you can tell. Moreover, as far as I know, the success rate of soul-summoning is also very low; there are high demands on both the dead’s obsession and the living’s yearnings."
"Even if it’s low, there must be quite a few wandering souls imprisoned in the Death Building over these past ten years." Han Fei still remembered his mission: if he encountered a living person who had been summoned by a soul-summoning, he would definitely save them if he could.
"This is the other point I wanted to tell you: if you encounter other wandering souls in the basement, don’t approach them, and definitely don’t talk to them." Fish Drinking Water’s voice carried a hint of horror: "That time I entered the basement, the elevator suddenly stopped on the fourth floor. I waited for a long time, and then a child’s head suddenly poked into the elevator, saying he couldn’t find his way home and wanted my help."
"Did you help him?"
"Because I had run away from home before, his words touched something in my heart, so I took him and wandered the fourth basement level. Gradually, I noticed something was wrong; there was no room he described on the entire fourth basement level, no road home; the Death Building’s basement was just one big grave!" Fish Drinking Water’s tone became frantic: "That child wanted to lead me into the grave!"
The lights in the elevator flickered on and off. While Han Fei was on the call, a dirty little hand suddenly reached out beside the silvery gray elevator door, followed by a boy’s head poking into the elevator.
He curiously looked at the people inside the elevator, appearing rather pitiful.
"Is this the child you were talking about?" Han Fei slowly rotated his cell phone screen, but the phone, which had been infused with the grudge energy and obsessions of dozens of ghosts and monsters, was unexpectedly unable to fully capture the boy. Even the cracks on the phone’s screen began to multiply, as if it was damaged by capturing something it shouldn’t have.
"Get away! Stay away from him!"
The phone screen went black for a moment, and then the call was cut off, with the group chat function also becoming unusable.
"It seems this child has some serious issues." Han Fei put away his phone and walked toward the child, unafraid, almost as if a biologist had discovered a new species.
In fact, Han Fei was not fearless: he just understood that fear would not solve any problems and it was better to remain rational and calm at all times.
"Little friend, why are you alone outside so late? Where are your father and mother?" Han Fei’s hand, held behind his back, was loosely clenched. Should the boy show any anomalies, he would draw the Rebirth Saber immediately.
"I live here, but I’ve forgotten which door leads to my home..." The boy’s voice was tinged with a sob. His clothes were wrinkled and ill-fitting, as if he had picked up someone else’s clothes and put them on himself.
"Don’t worry, just try to remember," Han Fei said tenderly, his voice warm. Then he patted the boy’s shoulder with the arm that concealed his Big Evil, dripping soul poison onto the child’s clothing. The Big Evil, which had been unresponsive, seemed to come alive again.
"I only remember that there is no light outside my house, it’s very dark, but there are dark rooms everywhere here." The boy began to cry as he spoke.
"How about I take you home?" Han Fei withdrew his arm, a small fragment of the blood-colored Paperman slipping through his fingers and silently falling into the boy’s clothing.
"I must return before 4:44 a.m. My father and mother said that if I didn’t, something terrible would happen." The boy walked towards the elevator, crying, seemingly afraid of the dark.
"It’s okay, I’ll take you home." Using the secret of touching the depths of the soul, Han Fei took the child’s hand. He could smell the stench emanating from the depths of the child’s soul, a feeling like the soul itself was rotting.
Han Fei had used this ability on many people before, but this was the first time he felt compelled to let go.
"Little friend, what’s your name?"
"I don’t have a name, my father and mother said I don’t need one."
"Then, what do they usually call you?"
"They never call me or talk to me, it’s as if the ones taking care of me are corpses. They’ve been dead a long time," the boy said, the stench from his soul growing stronger, yet his gaze remained pure.
"That’s quite an enviable family relationship," Han Fei murmured sarcastically, calling on the Big Evil inside his arm. He also noticed something peculiar: the Big Evil became excited when near the boy, as if it had encountered a foe sworn to death.
"Big Evil is the Natural Enemy of Butterfly, this is a special ability confirmed by the system. Could it be that this little brat is related to Butterfly?"
"He has been guarding this place for a year, which means he can freely move underground. This kid has some big problems."
