Chapter 348: The Headless Gate God

Chapter 348: Chapter 348: The Headless Gate God

Han Fei had already used up two of the five opportunities to look back, yet he still hadn’t seen the Soul Chaser’s face, and presently he had no clue how to complete the task.

Time ticked away second by second; if he didn’t see the other person within ten minutes he would die, being caught up to by the pursuer meant death, and using up all five chances to look back also meant death. These several fatal conditions stacked together brought Han Fei an unimaginable amount of pressure.

The only thing that could give him strength and hope now was the ability to log out. Before he logged out, he needed to gather as much information as possible to increase his chances of survival during his next login.

"I still have roughly seven minutes, which should be enough," Han Fei gave up on completing the task. When he made up his mind to log out, he felt somewhat relieved.

As long as he logged out quickly enough, death would be an issue for the next login.

"Try to save the remaining three chances. After logging out, I’ll immediately go to Zhuang Ren’s house to play the Death Building Game, trying to figure out what the Soul Chaser really is. That way, I should have a chance to complete this task on my next login."

The F-level task with a ten-minute time limit was outrageous. The Soul Chaser following Han Fei seemed to be in a different dimension from him. The Death Building felt like a mini Perfect Life Game, divided into surface and inner worlds.

The truly terrifying things were in the inner world, while the ’harmless’ owners, stripped of their memories, were placed in the surface world. And the Soul-returning Night was akin to a fusion of the surface and inner worlds, where the most terrifying things from the inner world would return.

There are two bridges between these two worlds: one is the Butterfly’s nightmare, and the other is the Soul-summoning Ceremony.

Coincidentally, this seems to correspond precisely to Butterfly’s ability to manipulate dreams and the Talent of the Happiness Residential Community’s Building Chief to perform the Soul-summoning.

"The scariest thing in the Death Building is waking up, and as the ceremony progresses, my pressure will only increase."

Things were already bad now, but they would get even worse in the future. As long as one lives, they will keep sliding deeper into despair.

The Death Building in the Deep World was like a bottomless abyss, where despair and pain were endless.

Hurtling downwards, Han Fei dodged attacks from behind a few times. He no longer looked back until he entered the corridor on the fourth floor.

"Room 4041!" Han Fei focused on a particular door, his thoughts racing: "Feng Ziyu was taken into the Deep World by the Butterfly. Given Butterfly’s temperament, it surely wouldn’t let him wander off randomly, so he’s most likely trapped in 4041."

Han Fei had the Talent of Soul-returning, which he could only use once per night.

If possible, he wanted to try it on Feng Ziyu to see if he could send him away.

However, the prerequisite for trying was to make physical contact, so Han Fei had to check out the situation in room 4041 while he still had the chance to log out and avoid risk.

He opened the security door, and as soon as he touched the doorknob, Han Fei felt something was wrong.

His palm was wet, with a few grains of white rice on it.

Entering the corridor, there was an indescribable abnormality throughout the fourth floor; at the entrance of each household, there was a brazier, and to enter the rooms one had to step over them first.

But these braziers didn’t contain paper ash or paper money; instead, they held numerous shredded photographs and dolls made of hair.

The corridor looked normal at a glance, but during the run, the ground felt uneven, and the walls twisted and skewed, like an endless tunnel one could never escape.

There were rooms on the fourth floor that contained three "4s," and Han Fei didn’t want to linger here for long. However, he found that to approach room 4041, he had to pass room 4044 first.

"Since I’m already being pursued by the Soul Chaser, approaching that room shouldn’t cause any problems."

Negative plus negative equals positive, Han Fei’s thought process was simple.

He didn’t hesitate and dashed towards 4041, but after running just a couple of steps, he distinctly felt something off.

The corridor seemed infinitely elongated; despite taking two large strides, his body only moved a very short distance forward.

A chill ran through him for no apparent reason, and Han Fei felt someone watching him. He looked up and straight ahead, where the bright red couplets on every household door seemed to bleed like the elongated tongues of Hanging Ghosts.

"Where is that gaze coming from?"

His eyes roved until they landed on room 4044, which was different from the others. Its security door was adorned with an image of a Headless Door God standing with its back to the corridor!

The Gate God was meant to deter petty thieves and evil spirits, but just the sight of a headless one felt extremely abnormal.

"Stay away!"

Han Fei’s instincts screamed at him not to approach, but then the safety door behind him made a noise—the Soul Chaser had also entered the fourth floor.

To stand still was certain death, but moving forward might offer a one percent chance of survival. Han Fei had no choice but to choose the latter.

He sprinted down the twisting corridor. Although he seemed to have run a great distance, he was still on the fourth floor, yet now alarmingly closer to the Headless Door God.

"What is the Door God guarding?"

The red paper Gate God seemed to be standing on a river of blood, its arms grasping something, the body slowly turning.

A brazier placed at the entrance to room 4044 trembled slightly. The people in all the photos in the brazier were headless; it seemed to be some sort of omen.

With the Soul Chaser hot on his heels, Han Fei found himself getting closer and closer to room 4044, and the hallway in front of him began to distort.

More and more blood appeared from the corners, and the floor under Han Fei’s feet seemed no longer to be concrete but rather puddles soaked with blood.

Thick, reddish-brown liquid constantly dripped down, sliding along his cheeks, and his sense of foreboding grew stronger.

"This isn’t a corridor; it’s more like Ghost Gate Pass."

Retreating meant death, so Han Fei had no choice but to move forward. Yet as he neared the entrance to room 4044, his dangling arms began to hurt again.

Blood-red patterns suddenly contracted, and black veins sprouted from the butterfly-shaped wound on Han Fei’s arm, as if something was desperately reminding him to run!

"Big Evil?"

When attacked by the Soul Chaser, Big Evil had helped Han Fei block a deadly strike, and now it was once again issuing a warning to Han Fei.

His frenetic footsteps halted abruptly as Han Fei looked towards room 4044. The Door God that had been standing with its back to the corridor had turned around at some point, dragging a gigantic guillotine.

As the blade fell, Han Fei didn’t have time to hesitate—he instantly chose to quit the game.

In the blood-frozen world, the descending guillotine almost cleaved Han Fei’s neck.

As consciousness began to withdraw, amidst the bloody red city, he faintly heard a song infused with anger.

As Han Fei exited the game, the song once again located him, greatly inciting its wrath.

Removing his game helmet, Han Fei slumped inside the gaming pod, trying to push open the pod door, but he didn’t even have the strength to lift his arm.

This night was unusually eventful for Han Fei; he was either fleeing for his life or on the way to do so until he was forced out of the game.

"The next time I log on, it will be the most terrifying Soul-returning Night in fourteen years, and I have less than twenty-four hours to prepare."
