Chapter 346 Soul Chaser

Chapter 346: Chapter 346 Soul Chaser

The old elevator ascended rapidly, the red numbers on the display changing so quickly it seemed almost abnormal, as if something were eagerly rushing up.

Mournful music lingered in Han Fei’s ears, mixed with faint singing, as if two different forces were now searching for him.

Having lived in the Deep World for so long, Han Fei’s senses had become exceptionally sharp. While the numbers were still changing on the display, he had already run to the stairs between the thirteenth and fourteenth floors.

"Compared to the thirteenth floor, the fourteenth floor is more dangerous. Do you dare to stop on the fourteenth floor?" Han Fei returned to the fourteenth floor, and to his surprise, the elevator indeed stopped there.

The number 14 on the display looked somewhat frightening. After flashing a few times, the silvery-gray elevator doors slowly opened to both sides.

At the same time, the Soul Poison on Han Fei’s arm began to spread, a tremendous pain striking him, as if Big Evil was reminding him in this manner.

Given Big Evil’s character, it probably would only remind Han Fei in situations where he was in mortal danger.

Supporting his poisoned arm, Han Fei quickly retreated and frantically ran downstairs.

Just after he started moving, a heavy footstep sounded from the elevator, eerily disappearing quickly thereafter and turning into the sound of insects scurrying.

Han Fei didn’t know what was behind him, but he knew that thing had started chasing him.

Running with all his might, the system’s cold voice suddenly echoed in his Brain Sea.

"Player number 0000, please note! E-level main mission Soul-returning Night prerequisite task—Soul Chaser!"

"The most important time in the Death Building during the year is April 4th, and tomorrow is April 4th, the fourteenth year after the Death Building’s last change of Manager! This day is its Soul-returning Night! Are you ready to welcome its arrival?"

"Soul Chaser (E-level main mission prerequisite task, difficulty F-level): Starting from now, you have five chances to look back. You must use these five chances to see clearly who your Soul Chaser is. If you haven’t seen the Soul Chaser within ten minutes, or if you have used up your five chances without seeing it, or if it kills you within these ten minutes, then your soul will be taken away by it!"

The system’s voice appeared very suddenly, Han Fei had not even been prepared, and a flood of information burst into his mind.

"Tomorrow is April 4th, the fourteenth year after the Death Building’s last change of Manager? Who will be the Soul-returning on this day?"

As the system issued the task, it also provided hints.

But now Han Fei didn’t have time to ponder these deeply, as he had inadvertently triggered an F-level task, and if he didn’t complete the task within ten minutes, he would probably be killed outright.

"What is a Soul Chaser? Is the guy who took the elevator to the fourteenth floor the Soul Chaser?"

Han Fei only had five chances to look back, he had to cherish them. If he still couldn’t see the Soul Chaser after five times, then his soul might no longer belong to him.

When one’s actions are restricted, the desire to perform them only grows stronger. Right now, Han Fei was forcefully resisting the urge to look back.

"F-level tasks and G-level tasks are fundamentally different. This is my first time encountering an F-level task that only allows ten minutes."

It had taken Han Fei ten seconds just to think about the mission information when he suddenly reached the corner between the thirteenth and twelfth floors, with the footsteps behind him turning heavy once more.

"Why do the footsteps sound different? Does the Soul Chaser not have a fixed form? And why did the system give me five chances? What is special about that number?"

The task was to survive without being killed. The missions in Deep World were bloodily realistic compared to normal game missions where being caught meant death or triggering certain conditions led to death, which at least made some sense.

But the missions in Deep World were utterly illogical; everything was added in as if the goal was to kill the player by any means necessary, pushing them to their limits.

The footsteps behind him were closing in, and despite running with all his might, Han Fei couldn’t increase the distance between them.

This growing sense of the unknown put immense pressure on Han Fei, who had no idea what was behind him. He wanted to imagine based on the footsteps, but they kept changing.

Fear was like a rope around Han Fei’s neck, preventing him from looking back, only allowing him to feel the chain slowly tightening.

"What on Earth is chasing me?"

Listening closely, within the heavy footsteps, there seemed to be a sticky sound being torn apart; the chaser’s shoes seemed to be covered in minced meat and blood, making faint noises when stepping on the stairs.

While fleeing, he was also keenly feeling his fear, which meant the player was slowly fathoming the fear, letting their imagined fear overlap with actual fear.

Unease was magnified, and although Han Fei could have logged out already, he now became nervous again.

If there was an Evil Ghost with a Beheading Saber behind him, once it got close, one strike could end Han Fei’s life, leaving no chance for him to quit the game.

His greatest crisis now was that he couldn’t see what was behind him. Inside the Death Building’s building four, he had to deal with the "Ghost" that appeared behind him and also be alert to any "Ghost" that might appear in front. Even he was finding it hard to cope. His nerves had been tense all night, and he was sure to break down if it continued.

Numerous thoughts and strategies flashed through his mind, but while Han Fei’s brain was still racing, he suddenly felt a mass of things crawling up his back, hearing rustling sounds, feeling the frantic, dense movements, and almost feeling sharp claws about to tear his skin!

In such a situation, Han Fei’s body reacted before his brain did, and he twisted his neck slightly to catch a glimpse of what was behind him with the corner of his eye.

There was no Fierce Ghost, no horrifying swarm of insects, and no Murderer with a sharp knife; behind him there was only a dark corridor and deep unease.

"Impossible, there must be something! Otherwise, Big Evil wouldn’t have warned me!"

Han Fei could also sense that something was indeed chasing him, so when he looked back, he didn’t stop running.

The mournful music and singing still sounded, Han Fei’s nerves now like a spring stretched to its limit. Those jarring noises seemed desperate to burrow into his ears; everything was targeting him.

The mournful music grew louder, more Paper Money appeared on the ground, and the couplets on both sides of every household’s door seemed even more vivid, as if smeared with blood.

Time was passing, and the first time Han Fei looked back, he hadn’t seen the Ghost. In such a high-pressure mission, he couldn’t focus on thinking.

Before he could recover from the previous scare, the heavy footsteps sounded again, this time even closer to Han Fei, and it seemed like the opponent was carrying something more, possibly dragging a body along.
