Chapter 341: Mother and Two Daughters

Chapter 341: Chapter 341: Mother and Two Daughters

Han Fei silently placed Zhuang Ren’s photo into the Item Bar, initially only wanting to give it a try, but he unexpectedly succeeded in acquiring it directly.

"Player number 0000, please note, you have successfully obtained a Level E Curse Item Fragment—Living Sacrifice."

"Living Sacrifice (Level E Curse Item Fragment): This cursed item is composed of several fragments, distributed within the Death Building, and related to the Level E hidden task, Death Curse. With your current level, it is advised not to touch it, otherwise, you are very likely to become one of the Living Sacrifices."

Perhaps because Han Fei’s level was indeed too low, the system provided a warning; it had also considerately issued a caution when he had challenged the Manager’s task before Level 10.

However, warnings aside, how could he possibly spit out something that had already been stored in the Item Bar?

With Han Fei’s personality, even if it meant destroying it, he wouldn’t leave it for Butterfly.

"Level E Curse Item Fragment..."

The most terrifying Curse Item Han Fei had previously encountered was the convenience store’s Blood-colored Paperman, which, even at its prime, was only a Level F cursed item.

"Living Sacrifice sounds ominous by its name alone; better to keep it for now. Perhaps when more items are collected later, we will be able to figure out what this Curse Item really is. Then we can decide whether to destroy it or keep it."

Gently, Han Fei opened the bedroom door and looked outside—the living room appeared quite ordinary, neatly cleaned, with nothing amiss.

Walking outside, Han Fei surveyed the area.

On the dining table lay a black and white flyer, seemingly a call for donations from the building’s residents for some repairs. They also held some activity every week at night, mandatory for all adults to attend.

"Someone seems to have written something here." Next to the flyer were a pen and paper and an opened calendar, with one date circled—April 4th.

"Again this date, what does it signify for Butterfly?"

The woman and the middle-aged man continued searching inside, while Han Fei quietly moved to the front door. He opened the old security door, wanting to check the room’s door number, but as soon as he opened it, he heard footsteps and voices from the corridor.

"Mom, can the deceased really return?"

"Do not doubt, do not waver. Hasn’t the family at 4244 already reunited? Your dad will definitely come back too."

The speakers seemed to be a mother and daughter.

"Sis, since the ceremony, I often hear footsteps in the house while half-asleep; it must be father wandering," said another woman’s voice; she seemed quite young, barely an adult.

"Even if there really are footsteps, how can you be sure it’s father? We can’t see him..."

"Even if you can’t see him, can’t you feel your dad?" The mother sounded a bit angry, retorting her eldest daughter, then started muttering something again, "Your dad will be coming back soon. Don’t make him angry; he always loved you the most."

"Because he loved me most, that’s why I need to be sure. He is unique in my heart; I miss him terribly, but he’s already dead. If he returns, is it still him?" The eldest daughter seemed aggrieved; it apparently wasn’t her first argument with her mother.

As the three got closer to the door, Han Fei hurriedly gestured to the woman and the middle-aged man, and they all ran towards the bedroom that housed a wardrobe.

The lock twisted and the security door opened just as the bedroom door precisely closed, with the middle-aged man dressed in the Blood Clothes being the last one to run in.

"Why are you standing at the door? Come in!" the mother urged, but the youngest daughter at the front hesitated, only to speak after a few seconds.

"Mom, I think I just saw a red shadow enter the room you usually don’t let us go into,"

"A red shadow?"

"Yes, it felt like it was wearing Blood Clothes. When dad had the car accident, wasn’t he covered in blood and dragged along by a large vehicle? Could it really be him coming back?!" The younger daughter stared at the bedroom door, hesitating to enter the house. For some reason, even though she was sure it was her father, she still felt fear and unease.

"Should we go into the bedroom and check?" the older daughter suggested.

"No, it’s not time yet; going in now would ruin everything," the mother shook her head in refusal, closed the anti-theft door, and entered the house. "We should just live as usual, don’t make a fuss because your father has come back and disturb him further."

It was easy to say, but knowing there was a ghost in the house and wanting everything to be the same as before was indeed very difficult.

Both daughters verbally agreed, but once inside the house, they still glanced at the bedroom door, intentionally or not.

"Hurry back to your rooms and sleep. The ritual says that when your father just returns, he will only appear while we are sound asleep. After he gets accustomed, he will gradually show himself, and then you’ll know whether it’s really him," the mother, holding a wooden God Statue in her arms, spoke as she treated the old-looking statue like a treasure.

"I’ve been busy all night and am indeed quite tired, so I’ll go back to sleep first," said the older daughter as she returned to her room to sleep. The younger daughter went to bathe, and the mother secretly entered the young girl’s room; when she came out, she no longer held the God Statue.

After the younger daughter finished bathing and went back to sleep, the mother seemed to have gone to rest as well; the living room light was turned off, there were no sounds outside, complete silence.

"Shall we hurry and leave? This family doesn’t seem quite normal," whispered the middle-aged man dressed in Blood Clothes.

"Wait a bit longer." Han Fei hadn’t expected to enter the room where Zhuang Ren’s family was. He wanted to figure out the state of Zhuang Ren’s family.

It was clearly Zhuang Ren’s family members who had died, but they thought it was Zhuang Ren who had died and were holding a Soul-summoning Ceremony in the Deep World.

What made Han Fei more cautious was the photo of Zhuang Ren, referred to as the Living Sacrifice. Han Fei felt there had to be a connection.

About half an hour later, a bedroom door was pushed open, and very light footsteps slowly approached the bedroom where Han Fei was.

Just when everyone’s heart was slowly rising, the living room light was suddenly turned on.

"Zhuang Qing, I knew it was you. What are you trying to do in your father’s room?" The mother’s voice unexpectedly rose from a corner of the living room. She had not returned to her own room but was staying in the living room: "The tape on the wardrobe is your doing, right? Did you also steal the keys to the Soul Lock?"

The mother’s voice contained a trace of anger: "I really don’t understand. Your father loved you so much when he was alive; why are you so resistant to his return, always causing such destruction!"

"I..." The older daughter pursed her lips, holding a kitchen knife, seemingly prepared to destroy the wardrobe.

"Tell me why!" the mother suppressed the anger in her heart.

"Mom, don’t believe what the people in the building say. I feel something is wrong with this Soul-summoning Ceremony!" The older daughter finally revealed her secret.

"There’s something wrong?"

"I’ve been having a dream, dreaming that we repeat the Soul-summoning Ceremony over and over. It seems like we’ve actually been through this day many times, but the soul summoning has never been successful," Zhuang Qing said, looking at her mother and hesitating for a long while before speaking again.

"Just because of your dream? You won’t let your father come back and reunite with us?" The mother was disappointed in Zhuang Qing: "Do you know what family means? Even if there is only a one percent chance, I will do everything I can to bring him back, because he is your father, my love."
