Chapter 311: Are You Human?

Chapter 311: Chapter 311: Are You Human?

The rooms in Death Building have more numbers containing the digit four in their door plates, the higher the "ghost" content inside gets.

All three security guards stared at that face at the end of the corridor, none of them moving a step.

The atmosphere in the hallway was oppressively frightening, with all sorts of visual and auditory horrors before, but the appearance of this severed finger seemed to foreshadow even more terrible and brutal events.

With a cough, Brother Hua raised his high-power flashlight toward the fourteenth-floor corridor.

The face at the door of room 1144 had no eyebrows or hair, bald and pale white, with only the eyeballs being black.

"It’s that madman again."

Brother Hua was not dealing with the other party for the first time; he suppressed his fear, holding the flashlight tightly, and entered the fourteenth floor, "Was it you who broke the monitor and the door?"

The face at the door of room 1144 didn’t speak, just watching Brother Hua and Xiaofang, its pitch-black pupils reflecting their figures. His body trembled slightly, and his facial expression twisted with fear, but that’s when he also saw Han Fei approaching.

Clearly, there were three men standing before him, but in his eyes, there were only the silhouettes of two, he could see Han Fei but couldn’t "see" Han Fei.

Surprise mingled with the fear in his eyes, his lips quivering, it took him a long time to complete a sentence.

"Are you human?"

Brother Hua and Xiaofang took him for a madman, but Han Fei discerned another meaning in his words.

The man’s words were clearly directed at him, this madman living in room 1144 had noticed the difference between him and other Ghost and Monsters.

In Death Building, there were few who could stay clear-headed, whose memories hadn’t been tampered with; this madman was something special.

Standing at the back of the group, Han Fei hadn’t spoken yet, but Brother Hua let out a sigh, "Of course, we’re human. Don’t get excited, was it you who threw the garbage at the entrance of the corridor? Can you show me your hand?"

"No, you’re not human, you’re ghosts." As Brother Hua approached, the madman immediately hid behind the door, "I’ve been able to see ghosts since I was young. You can’t fool me!"

"Fine, you can say whatever you like. Just stretch out your hand and let me see if there’s anything wrong with it." Brother Hua, worried that the madman might have severed his own finger, thus endured the horror and kept asking. From this detail, it was clear he was indeed a good person.

"The two of you, back off, step back! Let him come over, I’ll only talk to him!" The madman pointed at Han Fei with outstretched hand.

"Me?" Han Fei looked extremely surprised, pretending to be very reluctant, but actually, he had already started moving forward.

Brother Hua hesitated for a moment, then clapped Han Fei on the shoulder rather apologetically, "Newcomers must learn to stand on their own one day. Go and see if his hand is injured and ask him if he forgot to take his medicine again recently."

Xiaofang and Brother Hua took a few steps back, and Han Fei approached the door alone, "Bro, did you break the corridor’s surveillance?"

The madman shook his head, looking earnestly at Han Fei, "I’ve been able to see ghosts since I was young, but I know you’re human."

His pitch-black eyes began to change slowly; the madman had a condition called double pupils, and one of his pupils did not reflect Han Fei’s figure.

"You’re human. You’re the first person I’ve seen in this building! I am human just like you, help me! Helping me is helping yourself!" The madman’s expression was terrifying, but he was completely unaware of it.

"I’m a security guard in the building. It’s my duty to help you. What trouble are you in?" Room 1144 was definitely not simple, and Han Fei wouldn’t give away his secrets just because of a few casual words from the other side.

"I don’t know how I ended up in this building. All the ghosts say this is my home! But I know this is definitely not my home! I’ve tried to escape many times, but I can never leave the building. I’ve almost gotten out a few times, but somehow I’d always faint inexplicably. When I wake up, I find myself back in this room." The madman’s expression was contorted as he grasped Han Fei’s clothes, "Escape, only by leaving this building can we live!"

"Calm down first." Han Fei was trying to calm the madman down, but the man suddenly pulled with force, dragging Han Fei into room 1144!

"Bang!"

The door closed, and Han Fei felt as though he had fallen into an ice cave. The air conditioning was on full blast, but it was useless, the chill went straight to his heart.

He immediately reached for the doorknob, but the madman firmly pressed down on his arm.

"I’m trying to save you! They really are all ghosts! All of them are ghosts!" the madman screamed at Han Fei, his nails breaking the skin on Han Fei’s arm.

"Let’s talk this out calmly," Han Fei said, eyeing the wound on his arm. All ten fingers of the madman were still there, the severed finger wasn’t his.

Perhaps Han Fei’s calm manner had an effect on him, as the madman started to slow down in his speech, "I really haven’t gone mad. Everything I’ve said is true. This building is like a nightmare that one can’t wake up from, and we’re all trapped inside."

The person considered a madman by everyone in the building was actually the only lucid one. Everything he said was true, but to the onlookers, he just seemed to be ranting insanely or having an episode.

Han Fei understood what the madman meant, but he dared not show that he understood.

With master-level acting, Han Fei showed a complex expression of surface disbelief, yet internal uncertainty.

The madman, seeing the emotion Han Fei tried to display, gripped Han Fei’s arm tight: "You might not be able to accept it in a short time. You may have forgotten many things, but my experiences might help you remember something."

Outside room 1144, Brother Hua and Xiaofang kept banging and hitting the door, worried about Han Fei’s safety.

Inside the room, the madman got closer to Han Fei, gesticulating wildly as he told his past: "Have you ever encountered this? When you visit a place for the first time, it feels very familiar, as if you’ve been there before, perhaps in a dream."

"Yes."

"This building is such a place for me," the madman pulled Han Fei into the bathroom, closed the door, and turned on all the faucets, "Ever since I was little, I could see certain strange things, blurry and indistinct. I always thought there was something wrong with my eyes, until one day, I saw an extra person in my home."

"He got closer to me. Whenever I woke up in the middle of the night, I would find him standing by my bed, staring at me, eyes fixed on me!"

"I didn’t dare tell my family about it. I suspected it wasn’t my eyes that were the issue, but rather my mental state."

"Later, I made up the excuse of a business trip to secretly see a doctor. While I was undergoing treatment, my wife and daughter both met with accidents."

"Everything beautiful I had was shattered. When I had completely fallen into despair, he disappeared from my sight."

"I thought I had gotten rid of him, but from that day on, I began having the same dream every night."

"I dreamed that I woke up on the bed in room 1144, groggy, and saw someone in the room carving something into my skin with a knife."

"It hurt a lot, but I couldn’t make a sound."

"Blood kept flowing, soaking the bedsheet."

"This dream went on for a month. When my body was almost covered in scars, the person finally stopped. He placed something into my chest."

"The pain was unimaginable, and I completely lost consciousness."

"When I woke up again, the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was this room, as if I had entered the room I had dreamt about countless times in the nightmare!"

After saying this, the madman abruptly tore open his shirt.

His pale skin was like a perfect canvas, on which was tattooed a huge, colorful butterfly!

"I have tried various ways to die in this building, but I always pass out at critical moments. When I wake up, I find myself back in the bed of room 1144. Everything is restored, and the wounds on my body vanish, only the color of the butterfly pattern deepens. It seems to want me to keep seeking death actively, as if it can obtain something it wants through my death," the madman’s casual words made Han Fei think of the Manager’s tasks, where every time he died during a Manager’s task, he would return to the starting point.

"The butterfly carved into your flesh in the dream, is that this?" Han Fei had seen many Outsiders, but those infected with Human Pupae had incomplete or even deformed butterfly patterns.

Han Fei had never seen such a perfect butterfly tattoo. He suspected the madman might be Butterfly’s most successful work to date.
