Chapter 240: Chapter 240: Did Xu Qin Kill Number 8?
"Player number 0000, please note! Xu Qin’s friendliness has increased by one! Mind reading and seamless cooperation, your relationship has just become much closer."
Han Fei’s mind was once again filled with a system notification, his words seemed to have struck a chord with Xu Qin.
"Sis, you aren’t thinking the same way, are you?"
After putting away the dinner knife she had cleaned, Xu Qin glanced at Han Fei’s injured arm and whispered two words, "No rush."
Under Xu Qin’s lead, they left the third floor, passed through several empty rooms, and following a specific pattern, arrived at the first floor.
Almost all the rooms in this old, dilapidated building were interconnected, though most of them had been rigged with traps which could be fatal if not carefully navigated.
"Rest here for a moment; I’ll go find some food and medicine for you." Xu Qin turned and entered the kitchen, a room that seemed to be her stronghold in the Butcher’s house.
It had only been a few minutes when a rich aroma of meat wafted out from the kitchen.
Han Fei’s nose had been tormented by a foul smell all night, and sensing the fragrance now felt like he had arrived in Heaven.
"The freshest ingredients taste the best, so I didn’t prepare much else," Xu Qin said as she carried a metal basin out of the kitchen, her eyes bloodshot, her fingers slender and pale, with her crimson coat still dripping blood.
Any normal person seeing her carrying a pot of meat out of the kitchen would instinctively flee through the door, fearful of becoming the next item in the metal basin.
But Han Fei’s reaction was incredibly warm. He sat obediently at the table, looking at Xu Qin and the basin of meat, his index finger twitching in anticipation.
With a high Luck Value and the Midnight Butcher’s resistance to flesh-type curses and knife-type curses, certain preconditions allowed Han Fei to enjoy Xu Qin’s cooking without any restraints.
The thick gravy in the metal basin exuded an enchanting fragrance, Han Fei, using his only good right hand, couldn’t wait to start eating.
He gobbled down the meat greedily, and seeing how delicious Han Fei found it, Cry also licked his lips curiously and took a bite of the meat.
Essentially still a child, he was just one whose memories were filled with despair. Now, under Han Fei’s guidance, the childlike aspect of Cry began to emerge gradually.
Chewing on the meat made by Xu Qin, Cry was greatly impressed after his first bite.
But as he prepared to take a second bite, black curses began to emerge from his frail body; the meat he had swallowed seemed to come alive, emitting the roars of a beast.
It took a great effort, but Cry managed to expel the curse with Xu Qin’s help.
Covering his stomach, he retreated far from the dining table, looking at Han Fei enjoying his meal, envy visible in his eyes.
"Apparently, not everyone is entitled to eat her cooking," Cry thought as he watched the two talking and laughing at the table, dragging the little black snake that kept trying to climb onto Han Fei.
Han Fei was genuinely enjoying the meal. After his job change, his craving for flesh was far stronger than he had imagined.
He was also lucky that his Midnight Butcher profession came with new professional characteristics; otherwise, he could easily have gotten lost in the endless consumption.
Han Fei finished the entire basin of meat, having triggered curses occasionally in the process that felt like punches to his organs, but he didn’t show any pain, not wanting to make Xu Qin uncomfortable.
Taking advantage of his resistance to flesh-type curses and the mild nature of the curses themselves, Han Fei managed to weather them all.
After eating that large bowl of meat, Han Fei not only found his injuries had significantly healed, but his resistance to the flesh-type Curse had also increased slightly.
If he continued to train over a long period, Han Fei might even create a miracle of becoming immune to the flesh-type Curse.
"Sis, is this house yours? How come you have your own property in Beast Alley?" Han Fei looked at his belly, having eaten so much meat, yet he felt no sense of fullness at all.
"There are many different Curses in my consciousness, one of which comes from deep within Beast Alley. That female chef begged me to kill her and take her away, the out-of-control me turned her into part of the Curse." Xu Qin was different from ordinary Grudges, she was a Curse Aggregation, and her strength could not simply be measured by the ordinary system of Grudges.
Originally, Han Fei had not thought in this direction, but now that Xu Qin mentioned it, he remembered that Spider’s No. 8 alternate personality was a female chef, who was very kind before her first murder, and profoundly changed after it, turning from a chef into a butcher.
"That was a long time ago, before the current Building Chief had disappeared. He knew I had been to Beast Alley and even asked me to look for someone."
"Look for someone?"
"That man was called Spider. The Building Chief only knew his name and had no other information, and I haven’t found him till now." Xu Qin put away the iron basin: "After killing that female chef, I gained some of her power and also inherited her room and mask in the building."
Gently tapping the pig-faced mask on her face, Xu Qin revealed another crucial piece of information: "Behind each mask, there’s a number, I don’t know what these numbers mean yet, but many people in the building are collecting masks, apparently, something will be discovered once all masks are gathered."
"What’s the number on the back of your mask?"
"Number eight." Xu Qin didn’t hide it and directly said it.
"It’s probably not a coincidence, the numbers behind the masks are likely the codes of Spider’s different personalities." Han Fei stared at Xu Qin’s face, thinking about another issue in his mind, Xu Qin had killed the original No. 8 personality and transformed it into a Curse.
If the Writer still wanted to be redeemed in the old way, would he need to kill Xu Qin?
"Perhaps I should think about it differently. In reality, Spider killed all personalities, and he ended up in a tie with Butterfly. He knew Butterfly’s weakness but didn’t exploit it well. There should, theoretically, be a more perfect solution."
As Han Fei was pondering solutions, the door was suddenly knocked on.
The few people inside the room changed their expressions instantly, as if trained, all turned to look at the door.
Pulling out a dinner knife, Xu Qin opened the door.
A child, only eight or nine years old and carrying a backpack, stood at the doorway.
Normally, a child of this age should already understand many things, but the child at the door seemed naïve and foolish, as though suffering from a congenital brain disease.
He stuttered as he spoke, struggling to express himself, perhaps too anxious; he took out the paper and pen he carried with him from his backpack.
A moment later, he handed Xu Qin a drawing on a yellowed, smelly piece of paper, depicting a doctor holding a pig-faced mask.
Seeing the drawing, Xu Qin signaled to Han Fei to stay inside the house and not to move around, and then she left with the child.
"Spider’s No. 7 alternate personality is named Ameng, he stutters, has intellectual impairments, and enjoys drawing, all of which matches the child just now perfectly."
As soon as Han Fei saw the child, these details flashed in his mind: "It’s not easy for this child to have survived in the Butcher’s house, and he seems to be able to see many things others can’t."
Looking at the closed door, Han Fei signaled to Cry and Black Snake not to stray too far from him; he had a feeling that something was about to happen.
