Chapter 216: Chapter 216 Difficult to Send off the Deity

"Of course, it’s no trouble at all! I’ve already talked it over with my parents, and they’re both eager to meet you." Li Ruonan grabbed the man’s arm, the long-missed warmth bringing an irrepressible smile to her face.

She half pulled and half dragged the young man to the second floor of the house and opened the door to find her parents already seated at the dining table.

"Mom, Dad, this is our new tenant."

The dim light illuminated the cozy room as her father looked up at the young man. He adjusted his glasses and gestured for the young man to make himself comfortable, "Come, take a seat."

"Good evening, Uncle, Auntie," said the young man politely, with an air of refinement. He carried the Spiritual Altar over and sat down at the dining table.

"What are you doing wandering around by yourself so late at night? Have you nowhere to go?" Li Ruonan’s mother, her hair tied up, looked the image of domestic virtue.

"I need to get to the end of the street, and it might be quite dangerous along the way, so I was looking for a few safe places to stop. If I encounter danger, I can temporarily hide in those safer buildings."

"You’re heading to the end of the street?" Her father’s brow furrowed, "I’d advise against wandering around. Better to settle in here for now."

Authority laced the father’s voice; as the head of the household, he seemed accustomed to speaking in such a manner.

"Wouldn’t I be a bother? I don’t have much money on me and might not be able to afford the rent."

"Rent is not a problem. You just need to agree to one condition," said the mother, rising and approaching the young man. At that moment, the sound of a door closing and chains sliding could be heard. Li Ruonan locked the security door to the living room: "We can protect you, provide you with food, a place to stay, but from today on, you’re not to leave this room."

"Not leave?" The young man hesitated, "If it were just me, it wouldn’t matter, but I’ll have to ask my friends what they think."

The lights flickered in the room, and when they shone, the family of three looked normal. But when the lights went out, all three had their eyes rolled back, their faces twisted and pale.

"Now that you’re here, you should settle down comfortably." The father’s voice sounded terrifying as he lifted the bowl upside down on the plate: "Let’s eat. You’ll get used to life here in time."

The light warped, and the young man looked at the dining table. Each dish contained insects and rot-smelling chunks of meat.

"Go on, eat, don’t be shy! There’s plenty more in the kitchen!" His mother watched him, picking up a piece of meat with her chopsticks and placing it into the young man’s bowl: "Eat up, it’s delicious!"

"Auntie, maybe we should just forget it? I won’t trouble you any further," the young man tried to rise, but then the lights completely went out.

Strange noises echoed in the darkness—bang, bang, bang...

Li Ruonan emerged from her bedroom, holding a chain and wearing a brand new dress, her face alight with pure joy: "This time, I certainly won’t let you disappear without a reason."

"You can’t chain a man’s heart. As long as he has hands and feet, he will still try to escape," the mother said affectionately as she ruffled Li Ruonan’s hair. She fetched a kitchen knife from the kitchen, and both women’s faces were devoid of color, their expressions twisted and cruel as sanity slowly consumed.

"Stay, we’ll fatten you up," Li Ruonan said to the young man’s neighbor, murmuring to herself with a smile, "Don’t worry, I can feed you in the future."

Seeing that the other party had produced a knife, the young man realized he had no choice: "Are you sure I can stay here? As long as I want without any issues?"

"Yes, you can stay here forever! Forever and ever!"

The skin on the faces of the family of three began to slowly decay as they approached the young man. The once anxious young man suddenly calmed down.

"This is the first time I’ve heard such a strange request," he said as he opened the tattered Spiritual Altar in his arms: "Come on out, the landlord says we can stay here forever and ever, just treat this place like our own home."

The dim light twisted, and the temperature in the room dropped to freezing.

"Who are you talking to?"

The father sensed something was amiss first. He had barely spoken when the sound of a child crying filled the room, followed by numerous arms crawling out of the Spiritual Altar!

The Grudge swelled, the heavy scent of blood displacing the stench in the room, as a host of sinister and terrifying Grudge filled the living room.

Sitting at the dining table, the young man set down his chopsticks. Leaning gently against the back of his chair, his gaze calmly swept over the family of three, his face perpetually graced with a gentle smile.

"Auntie, we’re family now."

Surrounded by numerous Grudge, the family of three nearly came apart.

"No need to be formal among family, just sit wherever you like."

The family of three was pressed against the dining table, and they didn’t know what to do as they looked at the young man sitting opposite them. After a long silence, the father with glasses coughed a few times, "Our house is rather small; it doesn’t feel like it can accommodate so many people..."

"No worries, we don’t mind." Han Fei tapped his fingers lightly on the dining table, seemingly deep in thought.

As he didn’t speak, the family of three didn’t dare to make a sound either. However, the father and mother were frantically exchanging glances, and then they both glared at Li Ruonan, as if the girl thought that mooching off her parents wasn’t enough and was now starting to set them up.

"Actually, I truly have no ill intentions. Although you want to harm me, I am quite forgiving by nature," the young man’s words kindled hope within the family of three, "Let’s settle an account—You threatened to kill me, I’ll let bygones be bygones. Now I have the chance to obliterate your family, but I chose not to do it. Doesn’t this indirectly equate to me saving the lives of your family of three? Doesn’t each one of you owe me a life?"

The young man spoke quickly, but what he said seemed to make some sense indeed.

"As I mentioned before, my goal is to reach the other side of the street, and I need a few safe havens. If you are willing to cooperate with me as a way to repay your savior, then we will be friends, we will be family. But if you are unwilling to cooperate, then I’m afraid there’s nothing to be done..."

"Of course we are willing! You’re always welcome to come over, this will be your safest haven." Li Ruonan’s father responded very quickly.

"You’ll realize soon that this was a very wise decision." The young man pulled a blood-red paperman from his pocket and tore off a small piece of blood-soaked paper, feeding it to Li Ruonan’s father.

At the same time, a cold voice echoed in the young man’s mind.

"Player number 0000 please note! You have successfully completed Grade G hidden mission—The Home You Can’t Escape From."

"The mission completion is less than 90%, you receive the basic reward: one Free Skill Point increase, friendliness with Li Ruonan’s family increases by ten, and one building illuminated on the map! Illuminate ten more buildings and you will receive the Explorer Map Level 1 reward!"

The young man sitting by the dining table is Han Fei. He knew that completing missions by sheer prowess would result in a lower completion rate, but he no longer had the time to thoroughly explore each mission.

Moreover, since he had leveled up to level ten, performing Grade G missions would not yield as much experience reward.

Now that Han Fei’s ambitions had grown, what he needed to attempt were Grade F missions.

Moving to the window, Han Fei looked out at the street. The two-story residential building where Li Ruonan lived was situated on the street across the intersection—a pivotal location.

"This will be the first building I claim on this street. I’ll gradually clean up this place and make more friends."

Having completed a mission, Han Fei could now leave the game freely. He grew even bolder.

When all the grudges returned to the Spiritual Altar, Han Fei left the second floor of the house. He wasn’t someone who reveled in killing; as long as the other party was rational and communicative, he would try to make friends.

If the other party was really unwilling, then he would consider having other Fierce Ghosts and grudges come out to persuade them.

In fact, Han Fei now had a set of methods uniquely his own to discern others; he would use himself as bait to test the remaining rationality of the Ghost and Monster.

It’s said that one should not test human nature lightly, and Han Fei now had deep understanding of this saying.

In truth, before encountering Li Ruonan, he had already met several Residual Souls and one Grudge. It’s just that those guys were now all stuffed in the bellies of Cry and Yinglong.

Having followed Han Fei for half the night, the strength of Cry and Yinglong was rapidly increasing.

Yinglong’s wounds had completely healed, and the resentment he emitted was even more terrifying than before. His One-eyed seemed to have begun manifesting new abilities too.

Cry’s performance was even more astonishing. Unlike other tormented, frail boys, and unlike other grudges whose strength grew with their size, Cry was the opposite; he internalized all his hate and pain.

He continuously condensed his resentment, and his body had begun to show slight changes. His wailing was now far more frightening than before.

"Let’s go, to the next building. Tonight, I want to illuminate ten buildings on the map."

In the Deep World, most Ghost and Monster tend to stay in one place, slowly letting their grudges permeate every corner of a room, just like the previous residents of Happiness Residental Community.

But now that Han Fei had arrived, he didn’t care about any rules. In his eyes, there were only friends and enemies. To survive better, he could be an Angel or he could play the Devil.

After all the grudges had returned to the Spiritual Altar, Han Fei’s expression returned to its usual state.

As he was about to move forward, the door of the barber shop next door opened again, and a man’s face cautiously peeked out, "You’re actually alive?"

The moment Han Fei heard the man’s words, he exhibited a panic-stricken expression, gasping for air, as he quickly ran towards the barbershop, "Their family wanted to kill me, I barely escaped with my life!"

"Then they will definitely come after you. How about you hide in my shop for a while?" The man’s eyes flashed a hint of malice and greed, and his face broke into an excited smile.
