Chapter 179: Director, when do we go on stage?
Chapter 179: Chapter 179: Director, when do we go on stage?
Han Fei’s understanding of fear far surpassed anyone present; he had gone through various spine-chilling experiences, all of which were deeply etched into his mind.
The novelist had to kill the other eight personalities and, as the sole murderer, he needed to display two kinds of fear.
One was the same panic as everyone else in the building, fearing the murderer; the other was as the killer himself, a reverence for death.
He knew all the personalities well, aware of their weaknesses and strengths. In this dilapidated building, he needed to enact a life-and-death battle against eight, aiming to be the only one remaining.
Beast Alley was the world in the novelist’s eyes. The Butcher’s home, deep in the alley, was his heart, where nine personalities all resided. They had grown accustomed to each other, but on this day, one personality was murdered.
Opening his eyes, Han Fei looked at the male actor in front of him; it seemed like he had returned to Ghost Building, seemingly engulfed in a game he couldn’t afford to lose.
He danced wildly on the edge of the abyss that was life-or-death.
The most genuine fear was apparent on his face, yet at the bottom of his eyes, a hidden murderous intent burned like Black Fire.
In that place riddled with deadly traps, he wholly immersed himself into the main personality, determined to be a murderer and kill the other eight aspects of himself.
To kill for redemption.
Every precisely designed death marked the curtain call for a personality.
Without consulting the script and merely skim-reading it twice, Han Fei memorized all the lines, while the male actor acting across from him gradually broke out in cold sweats, feeling overwhelmed by Han Fei.
The script clearly had him doubting and subtly probing the main personality Han Fei was portraying, trying to coax information out of him, but he gradually felt his lines were so powerless.
He began to avoid his own gaze, feeling as if the man before him really planned to kill him, and he had no evidence whatsoever!
Normally, each actor’s audition lasted only five minutes, but no one called a stop, and the scene continued until it was completely performed.
The tall male actor’s face turned somewhat pale. As an actor with exceptional skills and many years of experience, he hadn’t felt this nervous in years, but acting opposite Han Fei, he had to focus with two hundred percent effort to keep up with Han Fei’s tempo.
As the scene ended, people in the audience whispered to each other, astounded by Han Fei’s performance.
Director Zhang grew increasingly pleased with Han Fei the more he watched, feeling extremely satisfied with him, as if Han Fei was born for this role.
Having been in the industry for many years, Director Zhang’s vision for selecting actors was very accurate. He had set his sights on Han Fei the first time he saw "Twin Flowers."
After meeting Han Fei, when he looked at the other young actors, he always felt something was missing.
It wasn’t that the other actors were inferior to Han Fei, but that they lacked the unique aura that Han Fei possessed.
In pursuit of perfecting his work, he had even made a special trip to Xinhu.
After watching Han Fei’s audition, he felt his trip was very worthwhile.
The nine personalities had different characteristics and professions, and although the main personality was just a supporting role, it was the core critical to the entire machinery.
Only if the main personality was convincing could the play have more possibilities.
"Han Fei, can you tell me about your understanding of this role?" Director Zhang, usually very serious, was all smiles when talking to Han Fei, as if there was some happy event at home, "Come, let’s have a good talk."
Stepping off the stage, Han Fei didn’t hold anything back; he shared his views with Director Zhang.
The two talked for nearly half an hour, and Director Zhang directly confirmed him for the role of the main personality.
When he learned that Han Fei wasn’t signed with any agency, he personally called over his assistant, ready to prepare a contract for Han Fei.
"Although our play features male and female leads, it can actually be considered an ensemble drama, with nine actors all possessing impeccable acting skills. This time, I aim to contend for a major award," Director Zhang said after watching Han Fei’s performance, feeling that the last weakness of his play had finally been addressed.
"Director Zhang, I can’t leave Xinhu..."
"If you’re really worried, I can add a clause to the contract stating that all your scenes will be shot in Xinhu." Director Zhang understood Han Fei very well; he felt that only someone with special experiences like Han Fei could handle such a complex role.
"Thank you." Han Fei carefully read the contract but did not immediately sign it.
"Is there anything you’re uncertain about? Is it an issue with the compensation? All these can be discussed."
"I’m very satisfied with the pay; it’s just that from midnight until five in the morning the next day, I’m afraid I won’t be able to film. However, I will try my best to complete my work earlier in the night."
For actors, it’s quite normal to film overnight.
"No problem," Director Zhang agreed immediately. Seeing his prompt response, the male actor who came with him was somewhat surprised.
If it were someone else, Director Zhang would probably have left by now.
Once sure there were no issues with the contract, Han Fei signed his name and then scanned the electronic contract with his personal information.
"Gathering all nine of you actors was not easy. Go back and rest well; we will call you in three days to inform you to join the group."
"Okay." It was Han Fei’s first time participating in the filming of a theatrical movie, and moreover, it was a collaboration with Director Zhang, a starting point he had only ever dreamed of.
Before nine o’clock, Han Fei had finished signing the contract and left.
After he left, Director Zhang also prepared to get up, but his assistant stopped him.
"Director, there are still several actors left. Why don’t you watch their performances too?" the assistant asked with a helpless look. "They are from some fairly famous entertainment companies. To send them back without even performing doesn’t seem right."
"Indeed." Director Zhang patted the assistant’s shoulder. "You and Elder Zhang stay here and watch. Let me know if you spot any good talent."
After speaking, Director Zhang got up and headed toward the exit, humming a tune and feeling in a very good mood.
"Director Zhang has rarely been this happy since he narrowly missed the award last time," remarked the male actor who acted with Han Fei, somewhat moved.
"Brother Zhang, I’ll leave the audition of the other actors to you. I need to think about how to respond to those companies," the assistant hurried after Director Zhang, leaving the male actor alone in the audience seats.
"Wait! I’m busy too!"
...
Rubbing his hands nervously, Acheng tried his best to remember most of the lines, repeatedly reinforcing his memory, but Han Fei’s image kept appearing in his mind.
"Just you wait and see; this time, you won’t take my role away from me."
After chewing a piece of gum to freshen his breath, he looked at the clock on the wall. Around nine o’clock, the staff finally re-entered the waiting room.
"Is it our turn now?" the actor participating in Urban Secret Love stood up with the script. "Let’s go on stage in the order we arranged and perform well. No matter who gets selected in the end, we will all be happy for him."
The actors in the waiting room lined up, each looking excitedly at the staff at the door.
Acheng, standing at the front of the line, was determined to prove himself to Han Fei. He was gripping the script so tightly that he even crumpled it.
"Have you all lined up?" the staff member looked at the eager eyes around the room, but couldn’t bring himself to say the words that had reached his lips.
He awkwardly pressed his lips together, and finally said carefully, "The actors have been chosen already; I just came to let you know, you can leave."
