Chapter 147: The Song Within the Building

Chapter 147: Chapter 147: The Song Within the Building

Captain Shi worried that Han Fei was being deceived by Mingmei’s appearance, and directly spoke of all the crimes the girl had committed.

After listening, Han Fei revealed a surprised expression, "How could such a sweet-looking child have done so many appalling things? She must have been only six or seven years old when the crimes happened, right?"

"Never underestimate a person’s evil. This child developed a brain disease because she did something terrifying when she was little, which is why she always sees the girl she killed in her dreams as she grows up," Captain Shi said with a solemn expression. "We definitely need to maintain basic humanitarian care for criminals, but we must not sympathize with them. To sympathize with them is to victimize the people they have tortured and killed a second time."

"Understood, then how long will this girl be sentenced?" Han Fei asked a question that he was particularly concerned about.

"The girl is young, and on top of that, she suffers from a mental disorder. To have her receive the punishment she deserves, we first need to get her to confess to her crimes."

"It seems that we need to treat her as soon as possible." Han Fei looked at the doctor beside him, "Is that auxiliary treatment helmet you use effective? I remember Deep Space Technology is known for games and communications, right?"

"Deep Space Technology is also world-leading in brain exploration. You’ve surely heard of their game ’Perfect Life,’" the doctor explained.

"Of course, I’ve heard of it. It’s a game that’s popular across the nation; its advertisements are everywhere."

"The auxiliary treatment helmet is connected to the core Smart Brain of ’Perfect Life.’ It is the latest equipment introduced to our hospital. It can utilize the core Smart Brain’s powerful computing and analytical capabilities to capture and present the patient’s complex pathological world within a fraction of a second. We can experience the source of the patient’s inner fears through this device, and then prescribe targeted healing," explained the doctor.

"So, you’re saying that this auxiliary treatment helmet and the ’Perfect Life’ game use the same server?" Han Fei didn’t understand these details and was full of confusion.

"There’s no issue with servers. Every product released by Deep Space Technology at this stage is built around the eighth-generation Smart Brain they are currently testing. That is their company’s core power. If you want to use their latest products, you must connect to the eighth-generation Smart Brain – it’s sort of a monopoly," the doctor in the white coat patiently explained.

"Aren’t you an expert in psychology? How come you know so much about Deep Space Technology?" Han Fei’s mind was working quickly, with the events he had experienced being interlinked, forcing him to be cautious. After all, some coincidences could be fatal.

"Times are changing, and technology can help us see ourselves more clearly. Embracing technology is the right thing to do in any industry."

"Great minds think alike, Doctor, may I ask your name?" Han Fei remembered that Li Xue’s teacher had specifically reminded him to be wary of people in the teaching and medical professions.

"My surname is Hu, my name is Hu Wei."

Han Fei returned home from the detention center, and it was already past eleven at night.

He ate something casually, connected various cables, and then put on the gaming helmet.

Blood descended, engulfing everything; the world through Han Fei’s eyes changed...

Just as the game login sound faded, Han Fei’s body was pulled down to the ground.

He opened his eyes and felt a chill on his face.

Looking down, he found his mouth covered by a pair of pale hands.

Goosebumps instantly sprouted on the back of his neck, and Han Fei slowly twisted his neck, only then realizing that Wei Youfu was behind him.

With eyes full of confusion, Han Fei pointed at the tightly closed door, meaning to ask if there was something lurking outside?

Wei Youfu seemed not to understand Han Fei’s gesture, simply slowly letting go of his hand, signaling Han Fei to stay quiet.

The surroundings were oppressively silent. Not just the Haunted House 1044, but the entire Happiness Residential Community was dead silent, without any sound.

After a full ten minutes, Wei Youfu finally slowly stood up, peering outside through the gaps in the window boards.

Suddenly, a woman’s singing filled the previously silent Happiness Residential Community. The bizarre children’s rhyme, with its eerie melody, seemed to be slowly approaching Building One!

The instant he heard the singing, Han Fei’s unease reached a peak. He silently returned the landlord’s ring to the Item Bar and lay down beneath the window, daring not to move.

Han Fei had once heard that song beside the convenience store; had it not been for the ability to exit the game, he would have already died then.

It was precisely because of his close encounter with it that he could better comprehend its terror.

"How did the ’Unspeakable’ get into Happiness Residential Community?"

The song grew from distant to near, at some point even lingering by the window of the Haunted House. It’s worth noting that this was on the fourth floor.

Consciously covering his mouth, Han Fei and Wei Youfu sat together, trying to communicate with Youfu through eye contact, but Youfu only shook his head slightly, daring not to make any superfluous movements.

The song did not dissipate; the most terrifying part was that, after dozens of minutes, the song actually appeared in the corridor of Building One.

As the sound-activated lights lit up one floor at a time, Han Fei’s heart clenched.

"Bang!"

A door on the second floor was flung open, followed by continuous sounds of doors opening in the corridor!

Floor by floor, the song quickly reached the fourth floor!

"Bang! Bang!"

The doors of room 1041 and 1042 were opened, with the heavy security doors striking the walls forcefully before the song moved on to higher floors.

In the moment when the door of room 1041 opened, Han Fei had completely stopped breathing, covering his mouth and nose, not daring to emit any sound.

Sounds of doors being opened continued in the building, and aside from these sounds and the song, there were no other noises; the entire world became eerily silent to the point of oppression.

Soon the song came down from the top floor, and as it passed the fourth floor, the door of room 1043 was also opened.

It was so close!

The song gradually weakened until it finally disappeared, not to be heard anymore.

Slumping to the ground, Han Fei realized his clothes were drenched in cold sweat, as if he had just been fished out of the water.

Gently patting Han Fei, Wei Youfu took out paper and pen he had prepared beforehand and wrote a sentence, passing it to Han Fei—Don’t talk for now, careful it might come back.

Wei Youfu didn’t dare add a subject in the text on the paper, but Han Fei had already understood the intended message and nodded.

Another half hour passed, and only after the song had completely vanished, and various eerie sounds began to emerge on the streets, did Wei Youfu get up from the ground.

He placed a hand on his chest and whispered, "It’s safe now, you all can come out."

No sooner had he spoken than a pair of arms emerged behind Wei Youfu. One by one, the victims of the Human-body Puzzle appeared, wrapping Little Eight layer by layer in the innermost part.

"We dodged one disaster, but who knows if we’ll be this lucky next time." Wei Youfu looked pale as he opened the Haunted House’s security door; apart from room 1044, the other three room doors on the fourth floor were all open.

"That thing actually ran into the residential area?" Han Fei took a long time to recover before speaking.

"This is the first time," Wei Youfu said with great confusion. "When the former Building Chief was here, the song had appeared outside the Community, but it never entered inside."

"The first time? And I just happened to encounter it?" Leaning against the wall, Han Fei looked out into the corridor. "It seems like it is searching for something?"

"It should be looking for Little Eight. The former Building Chief had mentioned that the eighth victim is a key; possessing Little Eight gives one the possibility of leaving this place."
