Chapter 125: It’s Impossible to Work

Chapter 125: Chapter 125: It’s Impossible to Work

The one-eyed clerk hadn’t heard Han Fei’s last words clearly. His eyeball reflected Han Fei’s silhouette, as he always felt that the days ahead might not be so peaceful anymore.

"From the moment your photo was nailed together with the Paperman, you became a new employee of the store. Now, I will take you to a place that only employees can access."

After coughing a few times, the one-eyed clerk led Han Fei into a room next to the warehouse. This room had two doors; one connected to the warehouse, and the other, upon approaching, one could smell an awful stench.

"This is the garbage disposal room; the door on the left leads to the warehouse, the door on the right leads to the back alley." The one-eyed clerk walked toward the door that reeked, pushing it open forcefully. Outside was a dark alley, about several meters long, with three huge garbage bins lined up. The nose-stinging stench came drifting from those bins.

"You need to make sure to clean the shelves every day and throw any expired and spoiled ’goods’ into the garbage bins."

"What if the garbage bins get full?" Han Fei glanced outside where one of the bins was filled with employee uniforms that were mostly tattered and stained with blood, clearly showing the immense pain the owners of the clothes had suffered before death.

"That’s not something you need to worry about." The one-eyed clerk gestured Han Fei to come closer, "Cleaning the back alley is also our responsibility. There are many ’rats’ in this alley; be especially careful while cleaning."

"Understood." Han Fei looked into the dark alley, and when he saw to the end of it, he suddenly paused.

On the other side of the alley, there was a road, and across the road was a dilapidated school.

The signboard of the school had faded, and Han Fei could barely make out the characters for Yimin.

"Who would have thought that right across the convenience store lies Yimin Private Academy."

Han Fei memorized the map; he knew the location of that school, but approaching it from the road would require a big detour that might encounter dangers.

After becoming a convenience store employee, he hadn’t anticipated discovering a shortcut.

"Happiness Residental Community, Yimin Convenience Store, Yimin Private Academy; these three can be connected in a straight line. If one could become both the Shop Manager and the principal..."

"Ding ling!"

Han Fei was daydreaming when suddenly the convenience store’s doorbell rang. The one-eyed clerk immediately took Han Fei back inside the store.

The store was still empty, but the temperature seemed to have dropped a bit.

"The new employee uniform is in the prep room; go change into it. I will take care of this customer," said the one-eyed clerk, his tone unflappable.

"Someone came in?"

Han Fei glanced around the empty room. Eager not to miss this learning opportunity from his senior, he hurried into the staff prep room. By the time he changed and came out, the temperature in the store had returned to normal, and the one-eyed clerk was cleaning up a pool of black blood on the floor.

"Has that customer left?"

"No." After cleaning up the bloodstain on the floor, the one-eyed clerk went into the garbage disposal room. Han Fei walked to the spot where the other had just stood, and noticed a stick of White Wax on the shelf.

"This is an outright black store! Only by maintaining a steady, caring service for customers will they return frequently. After carrying out a thorough elimination, who would dare to come in? No wonder the business is so poor here."

Han Fei was an actor, and dressed in the employee uniform, he looked even more like a staff member here than the one-eyed employee.

"The alley’s trash bin was stuffed with blood-stained employee uniforms, and the walls plastered with deceased staff photos; it seemed like a high-risk profession," Han Fei walked up to the convenience store entrance, "The shop manager is short-sighted, not cut out for business. Following him would lead nowhere, and might even cost me my life. I can’t put all my eggs in one basket; I need to have a fallback plan."

Reaching out to touch the convenience store’s door, after becoming an employee, Han Fei managed to open the door with little effort. However, his Ghost Pattern seemingly got scalded by hot water, began to struggle and tremble.

"I don’t feel anything, but the Ghost Pattern has started to hurt; it looks like the labor contract was indeed signed on the Ghost Pattern itself."

Several plans flashed through Han Fei’s mind,"Ghost and Monster with Dark Energy entering the building would cause the doorbell to ring, but when I approached the door, the bell didn’t react at all. It seems like everything in this convenience store is prepared for Resentment Soul. After all, who would expect a living person to actively work in an Underworld convenience store?"

Taking a step back, as long as Han Fei moved away from the store door, the Ghost Pattern would no longer feel pain.

"The convenience store’s contract is tied to my Ghost Pattern, whatever I do, the Ghost Pattern will bear the curse’s cost," Han Fei’s eyes swept over the convenience store, an audacious idea forming: "Should I take this opportunity to move the most valuable things in the store? Trading one Ghost Pattern for a pile of ’goods’ is a great deal no matter how you look at it!"

Han Fei also took advantage of the fact that the ghost inside the Ghost Pattern couldn’t hear his thoughts. If that ghost knew Han Fei’s plans, it would probably be scared out of its wits.

"If I just cash out and leave, it’ll be a quick deal. Better to resolve hostilities than create them. I’m still thinking about integrating the apartment buildings, stores, and schools into one community. If I completely anger the shop owner, my plans will fall through," realizing this, Han Fei decided to initially work well in the store and at least complete the main task, "A ghost can afford to be visionless, but as a human, I must have foresight."

Han Fei stood at the store entrance. An old man, who kept holding a thick stack of Paper Money and sneaking around outside, seemed still to be eyeing Han Fei but dared not enter.

"This old man is trouble; it’s better to deal with him sooner rather than later," Han Fei glanced back; the One-eyed clerk had not returned yet, and he touched the store entrance again, pretending to look like he wanted to flee from the convenience store.

No wonder the old man couldn’t tell; Han Fei’s acting skills were too strong, displaying hesitation, struggle, fear, and panic all at once.

Seeing Han Fei appeared to want to leave the convenience store, the old man quietly approached, seemingly afraid of competition, and did not dare to make much noise.

"That convenience store devours people! You still have time to leave with me!" the old man lowered his voice, "I am risking offending the store owner to save you, believe me, just run to the street opposite and you’ll be safe."

Han Fei looked conflicted, clenching his teeth as if enduring extreme agony.

"You still have a chance to leave, wait any longer, and you won’t be able to escape! I’ll take you to a safe place!" the old man kept urging, sensing Han Fei’s growing hesitation.

Hand on the store’s door, veins on the back of his hands bulging, Han Fei almost bit his gums to bleeding, looking at the street across, he finally made up his mind.

He flung open the convenience store’s door, and as Han Fei tried to leave, his Ghost Pattern continuously screamed and begged for mercy, the trapped ghost unaware of what was happening outside, thinking Han Fei was tormenting it on purpose.

"I can’t get out! My skin is being peeled off!" While the Ghost Pattern screamed, Han Fei also let out a scream of agony.

"Grab my hand!" The old man reached for Han Fei’s arm, a sly smile appearing on his wrinkled face as he excitedly looked at Han Fei.

Yet what subtly unnerved him was that, despite Han Fei’s piercing screams, his face also held a smile.

"Touching the deepest secrets of the soul!"

With an explosive burst of Physical Strength, the old man stepped forward unprepared, and Han Fei pulled his wrist into the convenience store.

The Soul Bell on the door rang, and the One-eyed clerk, not known when, drifted to the entrance. He and Han Fei, one on each side, stared at the old man. Their sinister faces squeezed out a smile and then in unison spoke four words.

"Welcome to the store."
