Chapter 936: Chapter 908: Send You a Ride?
Li Chen carefully wove his way through the forest.
He had traveled quite a distance, although that was only relative to his current state. Yet all along his journey, he hadn’t seen a single soul.
Originally, based on his calculations, after causing such a commotion in the marketplace and offending Zi Zhao, the whole mountain range should have been crawling with martial artists searching for him.
But to his surprise, as he walked along, he didn’t even catch sight of a shadow.
"What the hell is going on?"
Li Chen’s mind was full of questions. Still, regardless of his doubts, he clearly wasn’t going to stick around waiting for them to show up.
If not now, then when would be the right time to make a break for it?
Having finally reached the highway, Li Chen scanned the forest multiple times, ensuring there really was no one nearby before turning his attention to the road in hopes of flagging down a vehicle.
In his current state, there was no way he could manage running all the way to the city.
The closest city was over ten miles away. If he were his uninjured self, that distance wouldn’t have been an issue. But for the current him, it was simply too far.
However, much to his embarrassment, every car that passed by showed no signs of stopping for him.
He wasn’t some beautiful woman, and to make matters worse, his appearance right now really wasn’t appealing.
Though he had successfully escaped from Zi Zhao’s grasp, he was far from unscathed, with his clothes tattered and torn, looking no better than a beggar on the roadside.
Several cars had gone by, yet still, not one was willing to stop.
Li Chen rolled his eyes and approached the roadside. Picking up a small stone, he waited for the next car to pass close by.
Using the last trace of True Qi he could muster within his body, he flicked the stone with his finger.
"Bang!"
The stone hit its target precisely, lodging itself in the tailpipe of the small car. It hadn’t traveled far before the vehicle came to a halt.
"What’s going on?"
A man stepped out of the car, frowning as he began inspecting the vehicle.
After searching under the hood for quite some time, the man couldn’t find the cause of the breakdown and was left looking agitated.
"Uh... Hey there, brother!" Li Chen saw the man’s troubled expression and approached with a cheerful smile.
"Who are you?" Seeing Li Chen suddenly appear, the man gave him a wary glance, studying him carefully. Noticing the tears and dirt on Li Chen’s clothing, his vigilance heightened further.
Although this was a highway, it was also a desolate area in the wilderness, with not even a village nearby. For a man to suddenly show up here, it was only natural to suspect something unsavory.
"Me? Oh, I’m just a cyclist out on a journey." Li Chen lied effortlessly without a blink of the eye. "But earlier, I got a bit tired, decided to rest, and somehow ended up tumbling off the highway with my bike. It almost cost me my life."
"Oh?" The man looked Li Chen up and down, reluctantly believing his words. Since Li Chen had cleaned off the blood on his body, apart from his torn clothes and some dirt, there were indeed no visible signs of conflict.
"Brother, seems your car’s having issues, huh?" Li Chen said with a cheerful tone.
"Yeah." The man’s wariness toward Li Chen eased up somewhat as he sighed in frustration.
Li Chen clapped his hands. "Perfect timing! I’ve worked on repairing cars before. Want me to take a look for you?"
"You know how to fix cars?" The man glanced at Li Chen, looking surprised.
"Of course!" Li Chen puffed out his chest confidently. "I even majored in automotive repair and studied abroad for it!"
The man looked speechless. It was the first time he had ever heard of someone studying automotive repair overseas.
"Ahem!" Li Chen realized he might’ve exaggerated too much and quickly adjusted. "No rush. Let me take a look for you."
With the man watching him suspiciously, Li Chen circled the car, pretending to inspect the underside. Eventually, he arrived at the tailpipe, fiddled around briefly, and then walked back over to the man.
"Brother, your tailpipe is clogged. The culprit is this little thing right here. Try starting it again—it should work now."
"Hmm?"
The man got back into his car and gave it a shot. Sure enough, it started up. Staring at Li Chen in astonishment, he exclaimed, "Wow, little brother, impressive!"
"Oh, you’re too kind, too kind."
The man laughed heartily, never once suspecting that the real reason for his car’s breakdown was the young man standing before him.
"Thanks a lot, little brother," the man said gratefully. "To be honest, I’ve had a bit of bad luck myself today. Judging by your condition, you won’t be able to continue cycling, right? How about I give you a lift to the nearest city?"
"Thanks so much!" This was precisely the outcome Li Chen had been waiting for. Hearing the man offer, he couldn’t help but break into a smile.
...
"Chang Feng has returned?"
"Yes, Elder."
Seated in an antique bamboo chair, Elder Ji’s expression remained unreadable as he quietly asked Kang Quanfu, "I heard this incident caused quite a stir?"
"...Indeed, Elder. Reportedly, the owner of Zizhao Market City personally targeted Li Chen this time." Kang Quanfu’s face showed displeasure. "A dignified Earth-level Expert, taking action against a twenty-something youth... These people..."
Kang Quanfu didn’t particularly admire the sly and unruly aura that Li Chen carried, but since Li Chen was someone Elder Ji favored, he instinctively regarded him as one of his own.
"Noted." Elder Ji waved his hand dismissively. "How is he now?"
"There’s no news yet, but rumor has it he managed to escape," Kang Quanfu said. "However, Chang Feng seems to have..."
"Chang Feng is still young. But young people can’t have everything go smoothly all the time. Hopefully, this will give him a taste of the world’s harsh reality," Elder Ji sighed.
"And what of Li Chen?"
"Increase the search efforts. If it’s confirmed he’s unharmed, let him be. The boy has more resolve than any of us elders—let him go his own way," Elder Ji said with a faint, bitter smile, as if recalling something.
"By the way, what about Zi Zhao? Did they only act within the marketplace?" Elder Ji’s tone suddenly turned stern.
"Yes." Kang Quanfu straightened up, nodding as he replied, "Once Li Chen left the marketplace, Zi Zhao did not continue pursuing him. They remained inside and didn’t send anyone to track him down either."
Upon hearing this, Elder Ji nodded, a trace of amusement flickering through his gaze. "It seems they still have their reservations."
