Chapter 900: Chapter 872: See You at the Police Station
Wiping the sweat off his forehead, standing on the road by the cliff, Li Chen felt for the first time how satisfying it was to climb up from below.
In the past, with the support of True Qi, going up and down the mountain was almost effortless for him.
But now that he could no longer use True Qi, he finally understood the exhaustion of climbing a mountain barehanded.
When there were vines, it was manageable, but without them, he had to rely solely on his hands and feet, constantly struggling between the rocks.
Without any tools, Li Chen could clearly feel the pressing urgency.
"Phew—luckily, I still made it up."
However, after getting up, Li Chen was slightly dumbfounded.
Because he didn’t drive here, and running back from this spot would’ve been fine when he had True Qi, but in his current state, it’d likely be dark by the time he got home.
Helpless, Li Chen had no choice but to stand by the roadside and wait.
There were actually some passing vehicles, but to the drivers, if it were a young and attractive girl hitchhiking, they wouldn’t mind giving her a ride.
But the one hitchhiking was a man dressed in tattered clothes, so most of them just floored the gas pedal and sped off.
"Whoosh..."
Watching one car after another zoom past him, Li Chen felt somewhat at a loss in the breeze.
"So, everyone’s a pro driver these days, huh."
Just then, a truck suddenly stopped next to Li Chen.
"Hey buddy, seems like you’re in some trouble?" The driver, a middle-aged man with an honest-looking face, smiled as he spoke to Li Chen.
"Yeah, a bit of bad luck." Li Chen shook his head and said, "The brakes failed, the car rolled down, and I was lucky to jump out in time. That’s how I ended up looking like this."
Looking at Li Chen’s disheveled state, the middle-aged driver shook his head, "Man, you’re really lucky to come out of that alive."
Indeed, Li Chen looked utterly miserable. His clothes were tattered from wear, and his face was covered in dirt, making his story seem quite plausible.
Without a second thought, the driver opened the truck door and smiled, "Hop in, buddy. I’ll take you to the city. Judging by your looks, I bet your phone’s gone too, huh?"
"Yeah, it’s in the car; went down with it." Li Chen chuckled bitterly.
Once inside the truck, Li Chen finally breathed a sigh of relief. After waiting so long, he’d finally met a kind soul.
"Hey buddy, judging by your accent, you’re local, right?" The driver was talkative and unguarded, chatting with Li Chen while driving.
"Yep, I’m from Linchuan, work at the fragrance company." Li Chen smiled.
"Looking like this, you can still crack jokes. I gotta hand it to you!" The driver burst into laughter.
"Ah, as long as you’re alive, that’s what counts. Every cloud has a silver lining, right? What do you think, brother?" Li Chen replied with a laugh.
"True that!"
Chatting casually along the way, the truck headed steadily toward Linchuan.
However, just as they were about to pass through an intersection, a sports car suddenly sped in from the side.
"Screech—"
The tires screeched harshly as the driver slammed on the brakes, nearly flinging himself forward.
Still, the truck grazed against the sports car.
Soon, a young man with dyed brown hair stepped out of the sports car.
Pointing at the truck, he started cursing loudly.
"What the hell is wrong with you—are you trying to kill me?!"
The young man had decent features, but once he opened his mouth, his image was ruined completely.
"Get out of the truck! Now!" About to kick the truck, the young man reconsidered its height and solid frame, ultimately opting instead to rap on the door.
"Do you even know who I am? You almost hit me—don’t think this will end easily!" He banged aggressively on the truck door, shouting.
"This..."
The driver turned to Li Chen with a worried expression, "What should we do, huh?"
"Don’t be afraid." Li Chen’s face remained calm. "We did nothing wrong; he ran the red light."
"But..." The driver hesitated, unsure what to say.
The young man’s sports car was clearly expensive. Someone who could afford such a car and had such an arrogant tone wouldn’t be easy to deal with.
He was just an average truck driver and really didn’t want any unnecessary trouble.
"Don’t worry." At this moment, Li Chen reached out and patted the driver’s shoulder with a smile. "Brother, you helped me out earlier. This time, trust me."
"Alright..." After a brief hesitation, the driver opened the door and got out.
Seeing the driver step down, the young man immediately approached aggressively.
"Hey, old man, you nearly killed me! So, tell me, how are we settling this?"
Looking at the unharmed young man, the driver didn’t know how to respond momentarily.
"But...but it was...you who ran the red light!" The driver stammered, forcing the words out.
"Oh? So you’re saying you’re not paying up, huh?" The young man sneered. "Do you know who I am? I’ve got connections at the police station. Believe me, I can make sure you’ll never work as a truck driver again."
The young man glared menacingly at the driver. "You’re lucky I ran the red light; let’s settle this nicely. Just pay me 100,000."
"A hundred thousand?!" The driver’s eyes widened. "I don’t have that kind of money!"
"I don’t care!" The young man snapped impatiently. "This time, my mistake costs you only 100,000. If this goes to the station, it’ll cost way more."
"Y-you..." The driver was so furious, he couldn’t speak.
Clearly, this young man was trying to intimidate him.
"You’ve got two minutes to think it over. Any longer, and we’ll settle this at the station!" The young man’s eyes gleamed coldly.
"Then let’s settle it at the station." A calm voice suddenly sounded from the side.
"Who’s there?" The young man’s eyes darted toward the source of the voice.
Li Chen stood there holding an old, battered box beside him.
Right then, the sound of police sirens filled the air. In the busy city, the police had arrived quickly. Lately, their response time had noticeably improved.
Coincidentally, several of the officers who arrived were people Li Chen had met before.
"Brother, this recorder in your truck is really Ancient Elder-level tech." Li Chen chuckled, handing the battered box to the driver. "Later, give this to one of the officers—it’ll handle everything."
"If there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave." Li Chen smiled and waved. Before the two could react, he was already gone from sight.
