Chapter 168: Chapter 147 When are you planning to get married?
"Rheumatism? That’s too easy, have you forgotten what the person in front of you does?" Li Chen chuckled with a hehe.
Reminded by Li Chen, Yang Xin also remembered that it was Li Chen who had cured the sickness in her chest, and he had even claimed to be an old Chinese medicine practitioner.
"Ahem." Li Chen cleared his throat, though he was looking at other scenery. But after waiting for a long while, Yang Xin still hadn’t spoken, which made him feel quite frustrated. He had given such a hint, why hadn’t this girl shown any reaction?
"What are you looking at over there? There’s nothing there," Yang Xin asked perplexedly, following Li Chen’s gaze and turning her head too, but she didn’t find anything.
Darn it, Li Chen almost fell over. Couldn’t she have just played along with a bit of acting?
"Li Chen, I really did forget that you know Chinese medicine. Why don’t you take a look at my mom?" Fortunately, it was then that Yang Xin spoke up.
"Don’t worry, leave it to me. I guarantee to rid her of the ailment and give you back a mom who’s full of life and in great spirits," Li Chen patted his chest confidently.
"Then let’s go."
...
Yang Xin took Li Chen to her mother’s residence. Contrary to Li Chen’s expectations, Yang Xin’s mother didn’t live in North City District but in a nearby neighborhood.
"Why does your mother live separately from you?" Li Chen asked curiously.
"I teach at a school and needed a place closer by. The house there is rented. This one here is actually my family home," Yang Xin explained.
Before long, they reached the front door of the house.
Yang Xin took out her keys and unlocked it.
"Mom, I’m back."
Yang Xin called out and then set the things in her hands on the table.
Li Chen surveyed the room. It was quite spacious and well arranged. A small staircase led to the second floor, where the bedrooms and study were located. The entire layout was very comfortable.
Li Chen casually took a seat on the sofa while, following Yang Xin’s call, a lady of about sixty years old emerged from the kitchen hidden behind a screen in the hall.
"Xinxin, you’re back?"
The woman came out, and her face looked rather fair since she took good care of herself. Of course, the wrinkles left by the years could not be concealed, and strands of white could be seen even though her hair was dyed.
Ning Wan stepped out of the kitchen, her gaze falling on Yang Xin, a kind smile on her face. But then, her eyes turned to Li Chen beside her.
"Hello, Auntie," Li Chen greeted with a slight smile.
"This is?" Ning Wan looked puzzled, and just as Yang Xin was about to explain, "Mom, this is Li Chen, he heard..."
"I get it now. Xinxin, why didn’t you tell me you were bringing your boyfriend home?" Ning Wan suddenly became excited. Her daughter was always single, and she often pressed the issue. Seeing that her daughter was heading towards thirty without urgency, Ning Wan was incredibly anxious for grandchildren. But to her surprise, her daughter had seemingly come around and brought a boyfriend home without warning.
Boyfriend?
Yang Xin was stunned, as was Li Chen. This had all happened so suddenly. However, Li Chen had to suppress a laugh, while Yang Xin turned awkward. She hadn’t even acknowledged Li Chen as her boyfriend.
Ning Wan sized up Li Chen, the more she looked, the more he pleased her eye. Li Chen had a good look, didn’t seem like a bad person, and even had a distinguished air to him. In her eyes, he looked quite well matched with her daughter.
"Come, come, come, what are you standing around for? Please have a seat," Ning Wan urged warmly, inviting Li Chen to sit down. Her enthusiastic attitude was almost too much for Li Chen to handle, and Yang Xin, standing beside, was dumbfounded. Maybe her mother had gone crazy wanting grandchildren.
"Xinxin, go make some tea in the kitchen. Oh, I suppose you young people don’t really drink tea. Get some wine, then." Ning Wan chuckled, then her eyes began to scrutinize Li Chen’s face. The naked scrutiny made even Li Chen uncomfortable. One might say Li Chen’s skin was thick enough for national defense research, but even with his thickness, he was retreating under Ning Wan’s barrage.
Li Chen was amused and frustrated at the same time. He opened his mouth, "Well, auntie, I came here to..."
"It’s all right, I understand," Ning Wan smiled, "Li Chen, how long have you and our Xinxin known each other? How did you meet? How old are you? How’s the job situation? Have you bought a house or a car yet? Of course, it’s not a big deal if you don’t have a car or a house. But you should have a stable job for a good life after marriage. By the way, when do you plan on marrying our Xinxin?"
She bombarded him with questions like a machine gun, leaving Li Chen dumbstruck. Then he turned to look at Yang Xin, who was standing aside, swallowing hard.
This, he thought, was definitely an experience of being pressured to marry. So this was the ordeal Yang Xin had to endure every day.
Yang Xin was amused, for this was the first time she saw Li Chen show such an expression.
Meanwhile, Ning Wan’s gaze fell upon the items on the table.
"Oh my, young man, you brought gifts on your first visit. I appreciate the gesture, but what I would love to see more is you and our little couple getting along well. So, when do you plan on having children?" Ning Wan smiled and inquired.
Looking at Ning Wan’s kind face, Li Chen was breaking out in cold sweat. Weren’t they just asking about how soon to get married? Why did the topic suddenly leap to having kids, and why did the words change so quickly? Now they’re talking about being a little couple.
"Mom!" Yang Xin’s face turned red as she listened, and she couldn’t help but interrupt.
"Xinxin, isn’t it just because I’m worried that you’ve been single for too long? Okay, I won’t ask anymore." Ning Wan said with a slight smile.
"Mom, he’s not my boyfriend," Yang Xin said helplessly.
Hearing Yang Xin’s words, Ning Wan was stunned. Not her boyfriend?
Looking at Ning Wan’s puzzled gaze, Li Chen also gave a bitter smile, "Auntie, the thing is, we’re really not boyfriend and girlfriend right now, just ordinary friends."
"Oh," Ning Wan nodded, seemingly a bit confused, but then she smiled again, "So how are you two getting along? What do you think of our Xinxin, huh?"
Damn, she’s changed to selling the idea now?
Li Chen was startled, and Yang Xin couldn’t take it anymore and said loudly, "Mom, stop bringing it up. He’s here to heal your rheumatism."
"Alright, alright, I’ll stop. But you do need to hurry up a bit. You’re 28 already, not young anymore," Ning Wan said helplessly.
"Young man, I couldn’t tell that you can heal. But I’ve had rheumatism for several years now, I’ve been treated in hospitals and taken medicine, but it never completely goes away," Ning Wan spoke to Li Chen.
"Don’t worry, Auntie, I’ll heal you," Li Chen said with a slight smile.
"Young man, don’t speak so confidently. I’ve had many people treat me, both Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine, but at most it just improves for a while, then comes back after some time," Ning Wan said, "You might as well not bother, save your energy. Xinxin has already helped me buy the medicine, I’ll just make do with these and suppress it."
"Auntie, how can you say that? I’ve promised, uh, Xinxin that I would definitely cure your rheumatism," Li Chen said, "Trust me, Auntie, just one time and it won’t recur ever."
"Just one time? Young man, I don’t believe you’re capable of that," Ning Wan said with a smile shaking her head.
"Mom, even if he can’t, let him give it a try," Yang Xin said from the side.
"That works too," Ning Wan said, "What should I do?"
"Auntie, please extend your hand," said Li Chen with a slight smile.
Ning Wan did so, and then Li Chen reached out to feel her wrist pulse, after which he said to Yang Xin, "Go fetch a basin of hot water, bring some alcohol and a lighter as well."
Yang Xin was somewhat puzzled, but did as instructed and went to the kitchen to fetch hot water.
"This rheumatism, although it’s not a big illness, really hurts unbearably when it flares up," Ning Wan said, "I’m just getting old."
"How could that be, Auntie? You still look so young," Li Chen chatted with Ning Wan as Yang Xin soon brought the items over.
Next, Li Chen poured the alcohol into the hot water, then took out a lighter and ignited the alcohol-mixed hot water. In an instant, flames shot up, covering the entire surface of the water with a layer of fire.
Li Chen then took out his Silver Needles and said to Yang Xin, "Lift up Auntie’s clothing around her waist."
"Okay," Yang Xin complied, while Li Chen quickly scooped from the basin with flames burning on its surface—it seemed as though he had scooped up the flame itself—his hand now carrying a transparent flame which he then placed directly on the acupoint area on Ning Wan’s waist.
This step, similar in principle to cupping but done with bare hands, combined with the use of True Qi, had an effect far greater than ordinary cupping.
As soon as Li Chen’s hand touched her, Ning Wan suddenly felt a hot and comfortable sensation on her back, accompanied by a tickling feeling as if ants were crawling, which was quite pleasant.
With Li Chen’s hand withdrawn, the Silver Needle in his other hand was already accurately inserted into the acupoint.
With True Qi infused into the Silver Needles, and as Li Chen gently rolled the needles, they all radiated out.
As Li Chen inserted this Silver Needle, Ning Wan felt as though the rheumatism in her body had been awakened, starting to struggle violently.
This sensation was marvelous, like the sun melting the snow.
Li Chen repeated the process, grasping the burning flame in his hand and pressing it onto Ning Wan’s back again before inserting another Silver Needle.
Doing this enhanced the effect to the maximum, ensuring that Ning Wan could get better much faster.
Time ticked away second by second, and Li Chen’s healing session lasted almost five minutes. In the end, Ning Wan’s back had six Silver Needles inserted, and the flame that had burnt on the water’s surface had disappeared.
Watching Li Chen’s movements, Yang Xin found it unbelievable, especially the part where he scooped up flames with his hand. He made it look so effortless as if there was no danger at all. However, Yang Xin’s intuition told her that if someone else had done it, their hand would probably have been scorched red.
