Chapter 1077: Chapter 1049: Night in Luoyuan Village
Zhang Jing’s friends had all fallen into deep sleep, which was undoubtedly a massive blow to her. Her increasingly lethargic spirit day by day proved that she was also heading in that direction. However, for some reason, she was becoming weak more slowly than the others.
It was precisely because of this that she had time to investigate.
The materials she had were not obtained by her alone. They were the collective results of her partners who fell asleep one after another after the first person succumbed.
Knowing that the current medical methods were powerless, they began to figure out their own solutions. Going to the Miao Village again was also their suggestion.
However, none of them managed to hold out until the day of departure to the Miao Village.
With her partners falling asleep, Zhang Jing faced increasing pressure, because since everyone else had already fallen into deep sleep, all eyes had turned to her.
She was very tired, truly exhausted. Sometimes, she even wanted to be like her other partners, to directly fall into sleep and avoid facing all of this.
But she was still awake, which meant she still had things left to accomplish.
Zhang Jing was able to persevere until now; perhaps others didn’t know the reason, but Li Chen found out after a quick investigation.
The reason was simple: During the last time, Li Chen had used True Qi to regulate Zhang Jing’s body, hence her condition was much healthier than the others. That was all.
But even so, given Zhang Jing’s situation, she wouldn’t be able to hold on for much longer.
If not for the fact that Li Chen conducted another check on the car and immediately regulated Zhang Jing’s body afterwards, temporarily suppressing the Gu Poison, her next slumber could very well have been her last.
"Arrived?"
Half-awake, Zhang Jing opened her eyes, somewhat drowsily glancing around.
"We’ve arrived." Li Chen nodded his head.
"Why do I feel like I’ve just fallen asleep..." Zhang Jing murmured after getting off Li Chen’s back.
"That’s what everyone who falls asleep feels." Li Chen chuckled.
"I suppose that’s true..."
As she spoke, Zhang Jing gazed at the darkening sky, agreeing with Li Chen’s opinion. She hadn’t checked the time when they left Luoxiang Village, so even if she looked now, she wouldn’t know how long the journey took.
"Huh, I feel much more energized, and my body seems lighter." Zhang Jing suddenly remarked with surprise.
"That’s a good sign, it means you’ve come to the right place." Li Chen said, leading the way towards a village that was starting to appear in their view.
Zhang Jing looked at Li Chen’s back with a hint of bewilderment, then quickly shook her head and hurried to catch up.
"Brother Li Chen..." As her gaze moved forward, Zhang Jing’s face turned a bit pale: "This place... it’s so terrifying."
Indeed, Luoyuan Village had turned into a Ghost Village, devoid of any inhabitants. The silently empty village appeared especially eerie against the backdrop of the dimming sky.
"It’s alright, don’t be afraid." Li Chen’s gentle voice rang in Zhang Jing’s ear, allowing her heart to ease just slightly.
However, when Li Chen stepped into the village, he couldn’t help but frown.
It wasn’t because of the terror, but rather that a faint Yin energy pervaded this Ghost Village.
Such Yin energy could be sensed by even ordinary people, though they would just feel a chill. But in Li Chen’s eyes, it was a bit different.
"It seems that indeed many have died here." Li Chen continued forward after a brief frown.
Because of the darkening sky, Zhang Jing could barely make out her surroundings, carefully following behind Li Chen. For some unknown reason, as long as she stayed close to him, she felt inexplicably at ease.
Subconsciously, Zhang Jing reached out to hold onto Li Chen, clutching his arm tightly, as if fearing he might disappear.
Zhang Jing couldn’t see, but Li Chen could.
While the surroundings seemed to have been cleaned, he could still vaguely spot unwashed bloodstains in some areas.
"Something doesn’t feel right." Li Chen pondered, barely noticing the soft sensation around his arm.
But, after thinking a bit more, he couldn’t find anything overtly wrong, so he merely continued forward.
"Brother Li Chen, look! That inn is still there!" Suddenly, Zhang Jing exclaimed in delight, having discovered something.
The place Zhang Jing pointed to was indeed the inn they had stayed at before.
Li Chen nodded, leading Zhang Jing into the inn. To his surprise, the inn still had electricity, though the intermittently flickering lights suggested that the power was quite lacking, but it was at least some good news.
"We’ll rest here tonight." Li Chen said, "It’s too late now to head into the mountains."
Turning around, Li Chen noticed the somewhat uneasy expression on Zhang Jing’s face.
"What’s the matter?" Li Chen asked.
"Um..." Zhang Jing blushed a little, "Brother Li Chen, can I sleep with you tonight?"
"Huh?" Li Chen was full of surprise.
"No! That’s not what I meant!" Seeing Li Chen’s expression, Zhang Jing quickly explained, "It’s just that I’m scared alone... the village is deserted."
Li Chen finally understood.
Previously, he had thought; although things were progressing a little quickly, he could just about accept it...
"No problem, let’s stay together." Li Chen nodded, "But you should know, in this world, humans can be scarier than ghosts!"
As he spoke, Li Chen put on a wicked expression.
Zhang Jing jumped in fright, hurriedly retreating, only to breathe a sigh of relief seeing Li Chen’s smiling face, and grumbled, "Really, Brother Li Chen, don’t scare me in a place like this."
"Just a joke, don’t mind me." Li Chen laughed heartily.
Though after Li Chen’s little act, Zhang Jing indeed felt much less tense.
Late Night.
Attempting to fend off sleepiness through chatting with Li Chen, Zhang Jing eventually couldn’t hold back and fell asleep with her eyes half-closed.
Li Chen gently placed Zhang Jing onto the bed, then looked out the window.
This was a Ghost Village, and the light from this room was the only illumination in the entire village.
Li Chen sighed, listening to the faint sobbing sounds drifting from outside the window, shaking his head gently.
"So there is indeed something strange after all?"
