My Girlfriend is a Zombie
Chapter 1046: Before Dawn

Dawn Town.

For the entirety of X City, this place was merely an inconspicuous suburb.

Low buildings, wide yet desolate streets, roadside eateries everywhere… In addition, there were vast undeveloped lands and a variety of small factories. Nowadays, a few large trucks lay overturned in the middle of the road, their cargo long since turned into stubborn piles of garbage. The shop doors nearby, stained with old blood, occasionally emitted a creaky sound.

“Hey, hey, would a warehouse really be built in a place like this? The town itself is already so deserted, wouldn’t the outskirts be completely barren? But then again, maybe that’s exactly why the warehouse is nearby… Such warehouses need secrecy, right?”

On the street, two figures cautiously moved forward, guns in hand. One of them, with a cigarette dangling from his lips, inhaled the scent and remarked in wonder.

The man beside him rolled his eyes: “Yuwen, enough already! You’re like my elementary school teacher, always nagging! You haven’t stopped the whole way!”

“Come on… Mu Chen, you actually said that to me!”

“Ugh, next time I’m definitely not teaming up with you!” Mu Chen replied irritably.

“Do you think I want this? Right now, the only ones available for scouting are you, me, Zhang Xincheng, and Ye Kai. So no matter how we rotate, we’ll end up together… Just accept it, the sooner you suffer, the sooner you’re free,” Yuwen Xuan advised.

“Don’t you feel ashamed saying that? Whatever, I’m not arguing with you. It’s just an hour anyway…” Mu Chen glanced at his wristwatch. “Damn! It’s only been ten minutes!”

With that, he scanned the silent buildings on either side: “Seriously though, this town is really quiet. We’ve been here for three days and haven’t encountered a single Zombie… Although there aren’t any tourist attractions or famous industries, the permanent population should be in the tens of thousands, right?”

“Maybe our search area was too small before…” Yuwen Xuan said casually, “You see, because the population is sparse, a large number of Zombies would gather in one place. If they spread out, they wouldn’t have enough to feed on.”

Mu Chen pondered for a moment, then muttered, “You might have a point…”

“In that case, why don’t we just find them?” Yuwen Xuan suggested.

“…Our main task is to find food, right? Do you want everyone to starve?” Mu Chen glared at him.

“Ahahaha, no way… I was just saying, you know, as a side thing…”

Dawn Town, though remote, covers a considerable area. With numerous factories scattered around, the buildings are sparsely distributed throughout the town. Finding enough food in such a place is no easy task.

Fortunately, they hadn’t encountered a single zombie so far…

Although Yuwen Xuan had offered his theory, both of them knew deep down that the likelihood of it being true was quite low…

When the helicopter hovered over Dawn Town, it circled repeatedly to find a landing spot. The loud noise was noticeable even to humans, let alone zombies with their acute hearing.

Perhaps this place really was a ghost town…

But if that were the case, then the question arose…

“Where did all the zombies go?” Xia Na stood by the window of a small building, gazing outside.

In front of her lay an area resembling a parking lot, with empty factories lined up on the left. Directly ahead was a large iron door, rusted red.

The helicopter was parked on the open ground, and the two pilots were busy inspecting it, seemingly performing maintenance. Not far away were Zhang Xincheng and Ye Kai, both armed and perched atop two small cars, occasionally standing to peer over the walls.

This environment was ideal for a temporary respite. They had chosen their spot, secured their defenses, yet hadn’t encountered any danger… This safety carried an eerie undertone.

“Alright, let’s not overthink it. Maybe the zombies have moved towards the city. It’s not impossible, especially after an alpha zombie appears, their actions become more coordinated… Collective migration could be possible,” Xu Shuhan said as she entered with a cup of hot water, glancing at a small bed inside the room. “Is Ling Mo still asleep?”

“Not yet…” Ye Lian, sitting by the bed, took the cup and gently moistened Ling Mo’s lips with her fingers.

Nearby, Black Silk sat at the foot of the bed, swinging its legs, and remarked, “I wonder what’s happening to him. Normally, anyone would struggle after three days without food, but Ling Mo seems to be getting healthier.”

Ye Lian glanced at it, then at Li Yalin, and whispered, “Fed him, and Xia Na too…”

“Ahem…” Xia Na quickly interjected, “Since there’s no issue, it means everything’s fine. What Ling-Ge needs now is time. I reckon it won’t be long.”

Seeing Xu Shuhan about to ask something, Xia Na swiftly changed the subject, “What about Skinny Monkey? How’s he doing?”

“Sometimes he wakes up for a bit. Initially, he seemed very frightened, but after hearing that Ling Mo had killed that spiritual body, he calmed down a little. However, when asked what exactly happened, he still refuses to say. But today, he suddenly mentioned…” Xu Shuhan seemed a bit troubled.

“What did he say?” Li Yalin asked directly.

Even Yu Shiran looked up, her curiosity piqued.

“He said… once Ling Mo wakes up, he has something very important to tell him…” Xu Shuhan explained.

Xia Na frowned slightly, “If it’s so important, why can’t he just tell us?”

“I said the same thing, but he insisted that it’s not urgent and that he must tell Ling Mo in person,” Xu Shuhan replied with a complex expression.

For a moment, the atmosphere turned silent again.

Clearly… whatever Skinny Monkey had to say must be closely related to that Progenitor. He had been captured by it for a long time, and no one knew what happened during that time…

“I wanted to ask more, but Gu Shuangshuang was right there… If Skinny Monkey doesn’t want to talk, there’s nothing I can do,” Xu Shuhan sighed.

“Alright, alright, let’s not doubt him. Didn’t he sacrifice for the mission?” Li Yalin suddenly waved her hand. As a zombie, she keenly sensed the atmosphere and even managed to utter something quite “human.”

But just a second later, Yu Shiran quietly said, “He hasn’t sacrificed yet…”

“He hasn’t?!”

“No…”

“Oh…” Li Yalin thought for a moment, then silently stood up and headed for the door, “I’ll go get a towel for Ling Mo…”

After a moment of awkwardness, Yu Shiran clapped her hands and stood up as well, “I’ll go find the little… I’ll go play.” She abruptly changed her words, clearly swallowing back a certain term… But before Xu Shuhan could ponder it, the little girl had already disappeared through the door.

Xu Shuhan glanced at the others, then suddenly smiled awkwardly, “Um… actually, I wanted to talk to you… I know you’re not quite used to me yet, but I can’t really stay with humans all the time now… So…”

“It’s not that, it’s not about being unaccustomed…” Xia Na shook her head, then looked at Ye Lian and the others.

In fact, if it weren’t for the psychic link, they probably wouldn’t have been able to get along peacefully at first… For every zombie, other zombies could be seen as food. This group’s survival of the fittest was constantly playing out in a bloody manner.

The reason they could now stay peacefully with these humans was because of Ling Mo’s presence. Coupled with suppressing their instincts, they managed to restrain their strong aggressive urges. But even so, they would usually gather like this, staying as far away from the humans as possible.

“No, what I mean is…” Xu Shuhan’s tone suddenly became firm, “Teach me how to be a zombie!”
