My Fortune-Blessed Leading Lady -
Chapter 55: Redemption
Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Redemption
As if by some supernatural force, she watched a movie starring Bo Yan herself, her gaze resting on "Redemption."
This was a movie Bo Yan had made as an adult at the age of eighteen. In that year, it received widespread critical acclaim, but it was a movie she had never watched.
"Let’s watch this one!"
Yuran pulled out the tape and nestled on the couch to watch the movie.
The cat, which she had been petting, now and then yawned but eventually curled up obediently in Yuran’s arms and closed its eyes. By that time, Yuran no longer had the spare energy to pay any attention to the cat in her arms.
Her entire mind was absorbed by the plot and the performances in the movie.
"Redemption" was a film that delved deep into human nature, about a child who had been oppressed, ostracized, and subjected to violence over a long period. The outburst after prolonged suppression brought catastrophic disaster.
At the time, Bo Yan was just eighteen, still a teenager. His originally handsome features were concealed by makeup effects. The audience scarcely lamented his prime beauty as they observed his rough skin, gloomy eyes, and the dangerous undercurrent of murderous intent buried in their depths.
The teenager portrayed by Bo Yan was the target of bullying in his class, single-handedly doing all of the cleaning and fetching hot water for his dormitory roommates, just because he was an autistic patient, voiceless and thus oppressed.
He excelled academically but was always at the center of violence and the butt of the school’s ridicule.
He transformed from a naive boy full of hope for the future into a gloomy, increasingly mentally twisted murderer, living every day in darkness.
Being highly intelligent with exceptional anti-tracking capability, after killing three people in succession, he began to experience a change in mentality; taking a life gave him an indescribable pleasure and sense of accomplishment.
From the very beginning, the story was filled with oppression and heaviness.
Halfway through the film, Yuran almost lacked the courage to continue watching. Every time after killing someone, the boy would carve a long scar on his wrist and then go to the church to pray—it was evident he hoped for redemption.
His heart was in agony; on one hand, he did not want to kill, but on the other, only killing could bring him pleasure.
The more Yuran watched, the heavier her heart grew. When she saw the film’s end and the boy was being executed, he spoke in a hoarse voice, "If possible, I also wish I lived in an environment full of love and sunshine, but I can’t!"
When the film was released that year, she had already been in the industry for three years and was twenty years old, one of the busiest periods since her debut. She had heard people around her praising Bo Yan, but she herself never had the chance to watch it.
The opinions about the film varied, with both praise and criticism.
But also in that year, "Redemption" won ten Golden Bear awards, and its success was unparalleled for a time.
When the ending theme of the movie began to play, Yuran came to her senses, realizing she had been here for almost two hours—her godmother must have arrived by now!
She rushed downstairs and saw Bo Yan’s mother bustling in the kitchen. She placed the cat on the carpet beside the sofa and went straight into the kitchen, "Godmother!"
"Hey, baby, I couldn’t find you in the room earlier, and then I heard sounds from the projection room. I thought you might be watching a movie, so I didn’t disturb you!"
Yuran rolled up her sleeves to help and smiled sheepishly, "Yeah, I was so bored, I just watched a movie in Brother Qi’s projection room, a movie from when Brother Qi was eighteen."
Bo Yan’s mother was startled, and her smile widened, "It must be ’Redemption,’ right?"
"Did godmother watch it too?"
"When filming ’Redemption,’ your Brother Qi had a tough time; after all, the character’s life in the film is completely opposite to Brother Qi’s actual life!"
"That’s true!" Yuran laughed. Bo Yan was a favorite son of heaven, and she wondered with what kind of feelings he had taken on such a role.
