Chapter 277: 277 Luo Xiyun has arrived Chapter 277: 277 Luo Xiyun has arrived Beep–Beep–Beep…

Chen Xu was in the laboratory, sitting at a long workbench and testing a newly created product when he suddenly heard an alarm sound. With a wave of his hand, he switched on the screen above him and asked, “Zheng Long, what happened?”

On the screen was an ordinary-looking bio-human, who said seriously, “Mr. Chen, we’ve detected an unidentified object falling from the sky, approximately one hundred kilometers away from the base. Here’s the photo.”

Then, a snapshot appeared on the screen.

Chen Xu took a close look, put down the object in his hand, and said, “Hmm, it looks like a spacecraft, but why does it seem somewhat small?”

Zheng Long said, “According to the data comparison within the system, this should be the first satellite launched to this planet by the mothership, Sky One.”

“So it’s a satellite.” Chen Xu finally realized, pondered for a moment, and said, “Dispatch Wu Jia, Wu Yi, and Wu Bing to take a look, old rules, each person bring a robot and dismantle the mainframe to bring back.”

Zheng Long added, “According to the data, Tiangong-1 should have four astronauts on board. Judging by the speed of Tiangong-1’s descent, their chances of survival are quite high.”

While they were speaking, the screen changed again, pointing towards the sky, where a dark cloud of black birds swept down.

Chen Xu’s face changed slightly. Although the distance was too far to see what the dark cloud was composed of, he could guess that it was definitely the same kind of black birds that had attacked the landing craft before.

Up to now, he still hadn’t figured out where these birds came from or why they attacked objects falling from the sky.

In recent years, the base’s main research force had been used to construct a ground defense network. For the time being, they hadn’t managed to focus on the skies. Without completely resolving the signal-blocking problem, developing an air force was an uphill battle with little reward.

After a while, the black birds flew back into the clouds above.

Chen Xu stood up and said, “I’ll make the trip myself.”

Although he didn’t expect the system to provide him with any companions and most likely they had perished in the beaks of those black birds, he still decided to go.

There was something odd about this.

This was a game; the system wouldn’t arrange for something meaningless. Perhaps, the fall of this satellite was an opportunity, one that could initiate a side story or unlock a dungeon or something similar.

His instincts told him this satellite was very important.

He donned his thick protective suit, drove the transport vehicle, and set off with twenty guards by his side, along with twenty robots and drones, in a grand procession.

The base had expanded a dozen times larger than when it first began. The construction material for the base was a high-strength silicon molecular material, no less inferior to alloy metal.

Once the level of technology reached a certain threshold, raw materials no longer constituted a constraint on the development of the base. If there were no metal mines, no problem, they could use sand, soil, or even rocks to synthesize high-strength materials.

Chen Xu spent two years in his colony suit to accumulate a complete production line of high-strength silicates, triggering an explosive development of the base.

Recently, he planned to accumulate a production line of silicon molecular material robots to alleviate the labor shortage.

It wasn’t long before they covered the hundred-kilometer distance.

Chen Xu could see several corpses on the ground from afar. They died in a similar brutal manner as his previous companions, though mostly intact, implying that the black birds attacked them for reasons other than food.

He said, “Bring those corpses back and bury them with the others.”

“Yes, Mr. Chen,” Wang Zhu replied from the side.

After speaking, Chen Xu touched his chest, not knowing why, but he had felt his heart pounding fiercely since earlier.

“What’s going on?”

He stepped out of the vehicle and walked toward the satellite wreckage that was nearly falling apart.

Wang Zhu cautioned, “Be careful of the danger.”

Chen Xu shook his head; he sensed no danger. Instead, he felt something very important was near.

The satellite’s hatch was wide open, so he walked right in and soon arrived in front of a tightly shuttered door. All other doors here were open, only this one was closed.

He felt an inexplicable nervousness and said to Wang Zhu beside him, “Open the door.”

Wang Zhu found a hidden compartment next to the door, which held a switch. After he pulled it with force, there was a click, and the door unlocked.

Chen Xu reached out and pulled the door open to find a person standing inside–Luo Xiyun. Their eyes met, and his heart surged with an overwhelming rush of emotions, distilling into a single phrase, “You’ve arrived.”

Luo Xiyun walked out expressionlessly, and Chen Xu stepped aside, reaching for her hand and saying, “You weren’t frightened, were you? I’ll take you back to the base.”

Luo Xiyun instantly shook off his hand and walked outside.

Chen Xu suddenly realized that their communication channels weren’t connected; she couldn’t hear him at all. He quickly submitted a connection request.

“The other party has rejected your request.”

A prompt immediately popped up.

He was taken aback for a moment, it seemed that she had no intention of forgiving him.

But that didn’t deter him, he connected to the transport vehicle on the other end, using the computer privileges of the vehicle to establish a connection with her communication channel.

At this time, Luo Xiyun stepped out of Tiangong-1 and looked outside, where an endless grassland lay before her, the green grass seeming to merge with the white clouds of the sky at the horizon.

She stood there, as if struck by the sight before her.

Chen Xu walked up beside her and said, “This planet is wrapped in thick clouds that block out the sunlight. Plus, there is intense radiation. But the life here hasn’t been extinguished because of it, there’s a primeval forest over there with many animals. There’s also a big river nearby filled with various types of fish. In a couple of days, I’ll take you to see it.”

Luo Xiyun muttered, “It’s so real.”

“Let’s go, over there is our base. I’ll take you back, you can take a good shower and eat something,” Chen Xu reached out again to grasp her arm.

“Don’t touch me.”

Luo Xiyun once again shook off his hand and walked towards the transport vehicle.

Chen Xu wasn’t offended; he followed her.

Since she was willing to enter the dream, it proved she couldn’t let go of him. Thinking of this, he felt a surge of joy.

After getting on the vehicle, Chen Xu noticed her gaze drifting towards Wang Zhu and the others, and he introduced them, “They are bioengineered humans. This one next to me is Wang Zhu, the first on the left is Wang Mei, followed by Wang Lan, Wang Qin, Wang Qi, Wang Shu, Wang Hua…”

Luo Xiyun looked at him expressionlessly, “Are we missing someone?”

“You know, famous names aren’t allowed to be used.”

Chen Xu said as he started the vehicle, “Actually, I was going to give them numbers at first, but then I thought it wasn’t very respectful, so I named them following the sequence of common surnames. The first batch was named Zhou Yi through Zhou Shi for the Zhou surname. The surname Wu used the celestial stems and terrestrial branches; this resulted in Wu Jia and Wu Yi and so on. For Zheng, I used the Chinese zodiac, so there’s Zheng Shu, Zheng Niu, and the like. Later, when I couldn’t think of any more, I used names like Mei, Lan, Zhu, Ju for plum, orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum, or Qin, Qi, Shu, Hua for zither, Go, calligraphy, painting…”

He was clearly making conversation for the sake of it, as the best way to break an awkward silence was to keep talking, awkward chat was better than none.

“Bioengineered humans are also categorised by level. A level one only takes a month to mature but they have almost no learning capability. Whatever they know is programmed into them by a computer, they can only do simple tasks and have a short lifespan.”

“The second level takes three months to mature, they acquire more skills and have certain learning capabilities, akin to a slightly higher-level technician. They have a slightly longer lifespan.”

“The highest level needs five years to mature. From birth, they possess expert-level knowledge and strong learning abilities; they can even handle senior management positions and have a long lifespan.”

Upon hearing this, Luo Xiyun couldn’t help but interject, “Then what competitive ability do ordinary humans have?”

Naturally born humans take more than just five years in their youth, to reach expert-level knowledge one has to be at least in their twenties or thirties, and not everyone can reach that stage.

By contrast, the highest-level bioengineered humans need only five years, born with professional knowledge and strong learning abilities. Their competitive strength totally surpasses that of natural humans.

Chen Xu said, “That’s why every bioengineered human is sterile. Don’t be fooled by their appearance; they don’t actually have genders.”

“Moreover, in human society, except for a few special industries, the law doesn’t allow the production of bioengineered humans. It’s only because we’re facing special circumstances now that we have the authorization to create them.”

By the time they finished talking, they had arrived at the base.

Luo Xiyun looked at the cluster of buildings that resembled a city and felt shocked.

The gate to the base opened, Chen Xu slowed down and drove straight in, saying to her, “We can consider ourselves stranded on this planet, our mission is to explore it. But, it’s dangerous outside, the air is filled with lethal radiation, and there are dangerous animals. So first, we need to expand and strengthen the base, then later, we can go straight through with a ‘level A’.”

As the transport vehicle drove by, they could see all kinds of factories with bioengineered humans and robots bustling around.

Luo Xiyun looked outside, “Who are ‘we’ that you speak of?”

Chen Xu, now impervious to setbacks, admitted, “Currently, just you and me.”

Luo Xiyun didn’t speak again until the transport vehicle stopped and they entered the residential area.

After getting out, Chen Xu let Wang Zhu and the others disperse, leaving himself alone to walk with Luo Xiyun.

He hadn’t lied; Bai Jinxuan had been in the dream for half a year before logging off, saying she had a show to record that would likely go on until late. He had been alone in the dreamscape for almost another year.

The two of them took off their thick protective suits and walked into the hall.

Chen Xu took out a bottle of water and handed it to her, seizing the opportunity to sit next to her.

Luo Xiyun stood up and moved to the other side, twisted open the bottle and took a sip, and said, “There are some things, I want to make clear with you.”

“Go ahead.”
