Chapter 252 - Chapter 252 252 You can only choose one
Chapter 252: 252 You can only choose one Chapter 252: 252 You can only choose one Before obtaining the virtual dream device, Chen Xu led a Buddhist-like life: no need for a girlfriend, no quarrels with others, and at work, he just attended to his duties. In his private life, he sought out affordable entertainment activities that piqued his interest, like reading novels, watching movies, short videos, and playing games like Werewolf…
His days were easy and comfortable.
Did he not want to find a pretty and cute girl to experience a sweet yet worrisome love affair?
Did he not want career success, to earn a lot of money, pay off his family’s debts, and then buy a house and car?
No, the reason he became so Buddhist-like was that he knew how painful it was to yearn for something without the power to obtain it.
After entering society, one setback after another made him adopt a Buddhist stance. He worked earnestly and lived life lightly. As for everything else, he left it to fate. Maybe when the time was right, she would appear. Perhaps his boss would recognize his work.
Although he was Buddhist-like, he remained optimistic about life.
He was fortunate to live in this era, where even if one wasn’t good at socializing, a person could still live well alone.
Until he acquired the virtual dream device, everything changed.
Whether it was love or career, things began to go smoothly for him, and even though there were twists and turns along the way, developing feelings for outstanding women like Luo Xiyun, Yang Jinxia, and Bai Jinxuan was something he had only dreamed of.
Had the smooth sailing over the past year made you complacent?
At that moment, as Chen Xu watched Luo Xiyun packing up her things, such a thought involuntarily surfaced in his mind.
The silence lasted for several minutes.
Suddenly, Luo Xiyun, who had her back to him, threw down the clothes in her hand, braced herself on the chair with her hands, and said somewhat angrily, “Aren’t you going to say something?”
Chen Xu had thought of many things to say, but upon seeing her, the words simply wouldn’t come out. It was impossible to deceive a straightforward person like Luo Xiyun with just a few words.
Gripping the sheets tightly, he finally spoke, “What I said to you this morning was all sincere.”
He clearly saw her body stiffen.
After a while, she asked, “What about those two women?”
Another bout of uneasy silence ensued,
“Do you love them too?” she scoffed coldly.
Chen Xu spoke again, this time directly pleading with her, “Can you not leave?”
“You can only choose one,” Luo Xiyun stood up straight, her voice a bit cold, “I can let go of the past as long as you cut ties with them completely, have no further contact with them. Me, or them, who do you choose?”
Do I even have a choice?
Thinking of Yang Jinxia and Bai Jinxuan, Chen Xu felt the weight of his decision as if it weighed a thousand pounds.
As seconds ticked by, the atmosphere in the silent infirmary grew heavier and more oppressive.
“Don’t want to choose, huh?” Luo Xiyun’s voice became a bit raspy, she lifted her head, “Then I’ll choose for you–we’re done.” Having said that, she bent down, closed her suitcase, and walked out, carrying it with her.
From beginning to end, she never once looked back at Chen Xu.
Just as she was about to reach the door, Chen Xu said, “I’ve told you, no matter what happens, I won’t let you leave me.”
Luo Xiyun paused for a moment, opened the door, and left.
The door slammed shut.
Chen Xu gazed at the tightly closed door, feeling as if a stone were lodged in his chest; it was very uncomfortable.
He silently took out his cellphone and dialed a number, “Liu Yumeng, take good care of Xiyun for this period. She just left the hospital…”
After speaking, he hung up the phone, ignoring the pressing questions and threats from the other end.
He tossed the phone aside and lay back on the hospital bed, staring at the ceiling and thinking about her words “we’re done,” realizing he might lose her forever.
……
Outside, after Luo Xiyun closed the door behind her, she felt as if all her strength had been drained. Her back against the door, she covered her mouth and nose with her hands, taking a few deep breaths to regain her composure, then steadied herself with one hand on the handle of her suitcase and the other on the wall, slowly making her way to the restroom at the far end of the corridor.
Once inside the restroom, she locked the door and could no longer hold herself up; she crouched to the ground, tears rolling down incessantly while the phone in her pocket kept ringing, but she had no reaction as if she hadn’t heard it at all.
The restroom was rarely visited in the dead of night, so no one bothered her.
After an unknown amount of time, a flurry of urgent footsteps approached outside, “Xiyun…”
It was Liu Yumeng’s voice, followed by the sound of pushing doors, the adjacent restroom door opened quickly, and she reached the door of Luo Xiyun’s stall, knocking while calling out, “Xiyun, are you in there?”
She slowly stood up, her legs numb, rubbed her eyes hard, then reached out to slide the bolt open.
“Xiyun…” When the door opened, Liu Yumeng sighed in relief upon seeing her, asking, “Are you alright?”
As she spoke, she saw Luo Xiyun’s red and swollen eyes, obviously from crying, Liu Yumeng became furious, “Did that bastard bully you? Which ward is he in? I’m going to settle this.”
“Don’t,” Luo Xiyun stopped her.
Liu Yumeng was almost driven mad, “At this point, you’re still defending him?”
Luo Xiyun lowered her head, voice hoarse, “I don’t want to see him again, let’s go.”
Liu Yumeng was stunned, “You guys… broke up?”
Broke up?
Upon hearing this word, Luo Xiyun paused, tears falling once again.
“That scoundrel…” Seeing her reaction, Liu Yumeng instantly understood, “Did he do something unforgivable to you? I’m going to kill him.”
“Let’s go.”
Luo Xiyun sniffed, wiped her tears with her hand, and pulling Liu Yumeng with her, they walked away.
……
Chen Xu opened the interface of the virtual dream device, then clicked on the personal panel and looked at the companions section, asking, “If my three companions haven’t signed the agreement, does that mean they can’t be integrated into the dreamscape anymore?”
The familiar electronic voice responded, “Yes.”
Upon this answer, a touch of sadness crossed his heart. He remembered clearly that Luo Xiyun had been questioning him incessantly after reading the agreement and had not signed it.
Was everything really over?
Feeling distressed, he clicked on the companions section and stared for a while, then suddenly asked, “Why are all the avatars still lit up?”
