Chapter 127: Your Majesty

"Your Majesty!" Mariss Tormero, vice-captain of Vorad’s Highguard, burst into the Queen’s office with panic in his voice and step. Of course, he had urgent news. Otherwise, he would have never barged in without knocking first.

Tymia vor Akterad raised an eyebrow as she looked at Mariss, a little peeved about the interruption when she was going through reports about the status of her country.

"The tribes! They attacked!" Mariss exclaimed between breaths, having run all the way to and up the castle.

It did not come as a surprise to Tymia that the tribes attacked. It was only natural, considering what they were doing to their forest.

"Already?" The problem was that they had done so sooner than expected. The reinforcements to support the lumberjacks and heavy infantry had yet to arrive.

"The royal advisor said we had at least another week before the tribes united," Tymia said with a frown.

Mariss was helpless. He didn’t know what was going on in the royal advisor’s head, much less what had happened with his readings.

Tymia nodded once.

"Call for him when you leave, but report on our losses first," She ordered calmly.

"Significant but not crippling. With the reinforcements, we’ll be able to continue pushing deeper into the forest."

Tymia squinted with her crimson eyes.

"Which tribes attacked?"

Mariss hesitated for a moment since he wasn’t prepared for that question, but he quickly scanned his mind and answered,

"Uhh, the lumpy ones, the monkey ones, and...a couple of bears. The bears did most of the damage, but they didn’t leave without injuries. They only did that much because they surprised—"

"No birds?"

"Huh? No, yeah, no birds." Mariss shook his head. He would have remembered if the birds joined the attack. They weren’t easy to miss.

"Any cats or other things?" Tymia asked, her frown deepening.

Mariss slowly shook his head.

"No, Your Majesty."

"We’re pulling out. We got enough lumber. Any more than this, and we’ll lose more than we gain. Right now, taking the forest is too much for us."

"Yes, Your Majesty." Mariss nodded and was about to take his leave when he realized something and frowned.

"’Right now’?" He asked.

Tymia raised an eyebrow as she glanced up at him after returning to her report.

"Mhm. You’d need to surround the forest and attack it from all directions at once to succeed," She responded offhandedly like it was no big deal.

However, Mariss realized something as one of the queen’s trusted aides and the second-highest-ranking military man.

"Where to next, Your Majesty? Syttle?" Mariss asked, crossing his arms behind his ramrod straight back.

"Why, because they seem like an easy target?" Tymia asked with a snort.

Mariss didn’t answer, but he did give a slight nod.

"Hmph. A lion doesn’t show its fangs when it sleeps. No, not Syttle. We’re going for Matarok."

Mariss gave a sharp salute before taking his leave to make preparations. He didn’t forget to call for the Royal Advisor, who arrived shortly after he left, a little out of breath. He complained about the height of the tower that the Queen had made her office under his breath.

Since the Queen had called for him, he couldn’t be slow, but he had been busy divining. He had to stress over or make her wait, and there was no way he was making her wait. Combined with the number of stairs he had to take, he ended up with tired legs and labored breathing.

Fortunately, Tymia was in a patient mood and let Alexander catch his breath before she fastened him on the spot with a sharp glare.

Alexander Njiem bore with it while he straightened his scruffy beard before clearing his throat. He already knew what Tymia wanted, not because he could divine the future but because Mariss had warned him.

"Your Majesty," he started saying.

"Yes?" She impatiently asked.

"I have no excuses, but—"

"But?" She raised an eyebrow and shot Alexander a look that made sweat bead on his back.

"...But something is interfering with my divination. Something has changed between the time I predicted our success and yesterday. And now, most of my attempts at reading anything about Tiabe just ends up with darkness."

"Darkness as in death and destruction...?" Tymia asked with a frown.

"No. I just can’t see anything about it. It’s like a veil’s been draped over the forest."

"That’s concerning. What about our kingdom and Matarok?"

It was worrying that Alexander suddenly couldn’t see anything about Tiabe, but since they were pulling out of the forest, it wasn’t the end of the world. They just had to be careful.

"I can see it. I can see three or four turns ahead." Alexander nodded confidently. He could see the immediate future and the future that would come to pass when an opposing force acted on their knowledge of the same future three times. Of course, none of those futures were guarantees, since the opposing force could choose not to change their actions based on their seer’s prediction.

There was also a chance that the opposing seer could see further into the future or more turns, which would put Alexander at a disadvantage. But the Royal Advisor was confident that only the Minal could best him in terms of divination, and they didn’t side with any of the three kingdoms.

"Then will our plans need to be changed?" Tymia asked, her eyes narrowed as she considered their options.

"As the date approaches, details become clearer, but those are the only changes as far as I can see, Your Majesty." Alexander bowed slightly.

"Mhm. Dismissed." Tymia waved Alexander off when she was satisfied. She glanced at the papers on her desk for a moment before standing up and grabbing the staff leaning against the wall.

Her scarlet hair shone in the light as she moved.

She repeated and practiced the techniques she had practiced over a thousand times in the hopes that it would calm and sharpen her mind. It didn’t. She wistfully turned her gaze up toward the only window in this once-upon-a-time cell. A tiny hole too high for her to see anything but the sky.

The safest place in the palace. The furthest from the ground and the people living on it.
