Chapter 97: Chapter 96: Reward!

Owen Bertram took a deep breath and quickly looked back at the Burning Hillock. The dark red fissure still boiled and rolled with red flames. Terrifying monsters jostled each other to get through. Some were clawing so close to breaking through the red light, merely a paper-thin layer away from entering this world!

The Burning Hillock seemed to be still enraged!

Owen’s heart caught in his throat, and Vanessa Thoughts of Shadow was even more nervous, her hands gripping each other unconsciously.

With the monsters’ constant onslaught, one end of the dark red fissure was almost reaching the Haodang Mengjiang, while the other end had spread to the nearby mountains, right at the foot of the highest peak!

Vanessa panicked, her voice trembling, "If the fissure continues to expand, it will collapse the mountains and cut through the Mengjiang!"

"Once the mountains collapse, the entire County Town and dozens of nearby villages will be instantly buried in the calamity!"

"Downstream from here is the Lake Mature Region, the granary of our Wood Dynasty. Having been peaceful for hundreds of years, they are ill-prepared for war. The flood of Mengjiang will pour down on them, and unprepared during this dead of night, it will be a great catastrophe with countless lives lost!"

"If the Lake Mature Region has a poor harvest this year, the entire Wood Dynasty will be short of food next year, leading to numerous tragedies in which people will be forced to exchange their children for food."

Suddenly, Owen remembered something, "Quick, everyone get out!"

He picked up his sister, who was holding the Big Iron Pot. Master Basil and the others, who had initially thought they were doomed, were surprised that Owen had managed to turn the tide and save them all.

With Owen’s shout, the villagers snapped out of it: "Right, let’s get away from the Burning Hillock. Maybe that’ll appease its wrath..."

People scrambled to leave, and Vanessa followed them with some skepticism. Could the Burning Hillock truly be conscious? It seemed unlikely.

However, she followed the crowd and quickly retreated.

After Owen left the range of the Burning Hillock, he realized a detail: during their time inside, they hadn’t experienced the burning sensation. Was it because the monster had driven away that power, or was that power itself a part of the evil energy absorbed by the monster?

No one could answer this question.

After Master Basil and the others left the Burning Hillock, the first thing they saw was the village in front of them. Almost all the houses had been leveled, and the ground in the village was covered with gray-white dust, some of which drifted in the wind like a silent, desolate snow.

Thinking of their families, several people shed tears.

Uncle Yao knelt to the ground, overwhelmed by his loss and unsure what to do next.

Owen looked back and saw that the huge fissure had already reached the foot of the mountain, opening a crack in the rock that began to spread like a spider’s web.

He tapped the Wooden Bottle, trying to contact his little brother: Was there a solution?

Little Loach looked lost, but Owen sensed that his brother was not panicking, and this gave him a bit of comfort.

Vanessa’s face was full of worry. Looking at the Burning Hillock, it seemed the catastrophe was inevitable. They could muster the courage and strength to fight the monster, but faced with such a disaster, the two cultivators were genuinely without solutions.

In the fissure, the flames were still raging, but slowly Vanessa noticed that the fissure was no longer expanding.

Once it reached the foot of the mountain, it stopped. And on the other end, it had stopped just before reaching the Mengjiang River.

"Huh?" She straightened up and craned her neck to see.

Once they had left the range of the Burning Hillock, it had indeed gradually quieted down. After what felt like an incredibly long wait, Vanessa finally saw the fissure beginning to shrink.

The crimson flames retreated inward, pushing the terrifying monsters back into the depths of the earth. The process seemed to speed up, and though the monsters initially struggled in anger and discontent, it was of no use as the fissure kept shrinking faster.

Finally, the red flames disappeared completely, the fissure was gone, and only a small grove was visible from a distance. The air was filled with a scorching heat.

Behind the fissure, the surging spiritual waves and the various radiating light also gradually faded away.

Only the faintly visible five-pillared archway stood unwaveringly. It wasn’t until all the anomalies within the Burning Hillock had disappeared that the archway slowly faded and finally vanished entirely.

Vanessa looked up at the sky and let out a sigh of relief. At this moment, dawn was breaking, and a faint white glow appeared on the distant horizon.

Owen Bertram shook his head. The appearance of the monster had been so sudden that he was completely unprepared, resulting in a hasty battle with dire consequences as he ended up using all his hidden cards.

He disliked this kind of fight. Owen Bertram preferred to stay one step ahead of the enemy, preparing all their countermeasures in advance. When the opponent jumped out, he could proudly say, "I predicted your prediction!"

"No, no, that won’t do. I must keep more tricks up my sleeve in the future."

"And not just a few - dozens, even hundreds!"

Owen affectionately patted the Wooden Bottle; everything depended on his younger brother!

Little Loach was clueless.

Suddenly, Vanessa glanced at Owen: Did the Burning Hillock really have a consciousness? Did Owen manage to prevent a major catastrophe by having them leave its range?

As the sun rose, a giant banner of flaming gold flew towards them from the direction of the County Government Office. A booming voice echoed through the mountains and forests, "Old Husband is late! What on Earth has happened here?"

The old officiant from the Horizon Bureau finally arrived.

...

There was a Taoist temple halfway between County Town and Extinct Village. It was not large, nor did it have any cultivation inheritances. It was just an ordinary Taoist temple.

Behind the temple was an octagonal pavilion where Owen Bertram and his sister were lying on rocking chairs, covered by imported wool blankets from the Wood Dynasty. The warm sun shone on them as it was a late autumn afternoon.

The villagers had been arranged to stay here by the County Government Office. It wasn’t until now that Owen learned the name of the county where Extinct Village was located: Jaafar County...

It was said that many years ago, there was only a village here, where villagers lived around a huge yellow rock. Gradually, it had formed into a county town.

As a man who had made great contributions, Owen could not be treated harshly. But the officials from the County Government Office didn’t want to let the people of Extinct Village enter the town, so they chose this "suitable" place, with the pretext of recovery.

At the same time, they were waiting for the inspection by the Horizon Bureau.

However, Owen found it strange that they hadn’t been inspected so far after two days. It seemed that the Horizon Bureau was really busy.

Everyone’s movements were restricted; they couldn’t go beyond five miles around the temple.

Only the villagers were in the temple, while the government officials from the County Town guarded the perimeter. However, Master Basil and the others hadn’t even stepped out of the temple gate within the five-mile range.

They had good food and drink here and didn’t need to risk their lives harvesting pearls, nor did they suffer from cold poison. It was like paradise, and they all lazed around without wanting to move.

Owen, on the other hand, took his sister on a tour around the area. He had already been subjected to the inspection by the Horizon Bureau, and all he had to do was be patient for a few more days. Once the Horizon Bureau had time, they could naturally leave without causing any trouble.

Verna managed to find seventeen types of edible wild vegetables and fruits in the surrounding forest on their outing...

As her elder brother, Owen could only exclaim: Amazing!

However, Little Loach was in trouble. In the past two days, it could only rely on Owen feeding it spiritual pills every night.

Owen was finally justified: I told you before that you should store food for a rainy day. If you had finished everything when you got them, you would be hungry now.

Little Loach really wanted to argue back, but upon seeing the spiritual pills in Owen’s hand, it held back.

Owen spent most of the two days reflecting on the lessons learned from their recent battle.

"As the head of the family, I have shown courage and have been the backbone of this battle. It is thanks to me that our family has survived intact."

"Well, the part about my role in the battle is now summarized."

"Now, let’s talk about your problem, Little Owen."

Little Loach was stunned. It had sacrificed a valuable Fire Pill of the same level as its Sword Pill... But Owen didn’t give it a chance to defend itself. Owen spoke seriously, "Due to your gluttony and constant skimping on what you should have given back to me, I didn’t have enough secret weapons during the battle. The monster worked out all my tricks, and that’s why we were in grave danger!"

Little Loach felt that there was something wrong with the logic, but Owen had caught its weakness! In reality, it had indeed been skimping. Therefore, Little Loach was not willing to take the blame but could only protest weakly with a few snorts.

Owen waved his hand and suppressed Little Loach, "In any case, you must learn the lesson: give back more to me and prepare more magical treasures for me. If I have more tricks up my sleeve, our family will be safer."

"Do you understand?"

Little Loach was unconvinced. As Owen tossed a few spiritual pills in his hand, Little Loach immediately nodded with saliva dribbling from its mouth.

Then, it was time to assess the gains and losses from this battle.

The setback in this battle was so great that they had lost everything!

The Turtle Shell Shield, Chain Lock, and Fire Pill had all been shattered. However, after the monsters were incinerated, only dust remained in the air.

The only thing they obtained was a yellow-brown rope.

The monster’s body was even reduced to ashes, leaving nothing behind. Owen had thought that there would be no gains from this battle, but he didn’t expect to find this plain-looking rope in his Storage Brocade Pouch the next day.

He was shocked at first. How could someone put such a thing in his Storage Brocade Pouch without alerting him? If someone had such power, it would be easy for them to take his life!

The rope lay quietly in the Storage Brocade Pouch, motionless. Owen stared at it for a long time, feeling that it looked familiar...

However, his cautious nature prevented him from touching it, so he quietly closed the Storage Brocade Pouch and decided to wait and see.

Two days passed, and there was still no movement from the rope in the Storage Brocade Pouch. Owen decided not to wait any longer and pulled the rope out with a wave of spiritual energy.

As soon as the rope left the Storage Brocade Pouch and entered the world, Owen suddenly realized: This was a reward from Burning Hillock!
