Chapter 935: Chapter 481: Low-level Military Officer_4
Officers like Manuel, who belong to the middle and lower ranks, are not uncommon in the Nanni Nation. Deep in their hearts, they despise and reject the Red Barbarians but lack the power to enforce their own ideas.
His team stopped outside the Blood Fog, and a strange multi-headed creature emerged from it. The creature had no eyes, mouth, or ears, but had several noses. Each nose sniffed someone in the group—even not distinguishing between warriors and criminals.
Every time they underwent such an inspection, Manuel felt humiliated: in the eyes of the Red Barbarians, the self-proclaimed honorable Nanni warriors were no different from these criminals!
Once the Blood Fog confirmed their identities, a passage opened. With a livid face, Manuel led his team in silence through it. The valley was bustling under the cover of the Blood Fog; everything in it, every living being, was dyed with a faint red light.
Three huge brick kilns, resembling large beehives, stood in the center of the valley. They had round openings at the top, spewing Blood Fog outward.
Terrible screams came from these three brick kilns.
There were a large number of Red Barbarians here, outnumbering the Lester people. They were transporting sealed wooden boxes and a large number of criminals into the brick kilns.
There was only one entrance below the brick kilns, and once you went in, you would not come out.
To the north of the three brick kilns, there was a four-story stone building with a clear area of a hundred feet around it. No one dared to approach it. Manuel didn’t even dare to stare at the stone building for too long, for he knew there must be an incredibly powerful existence inside.
Upon arriving here, the criminals seemed to sense something, and their cries suddenly grew louder. They tried desperately to escape, enraging the Red Barbarians, who shouted, "Fools! Quickly, bring them back!"
Manuel directed his subordinates to capture the criminals who, in truth, had no chance of escape. Despite his reluctance, he personally participated in the process.
An emaciated elderly criminal fell to the ground. Manuel reached out to pull him up, but quickly realized the elder was different from the others. He didn’t seem to be trying to escape, but rather was brought down because all the criminals were bound together.
As he pulled the elder up, Manuel saw that the old man’s expression was calm, his breathing and heartbeat unchanged, as if he was prepared to accept this damned fate.
Suddenly, something was stuffed into his hand. Manuel’s face changed as he heard the elder’s voice in his ear: "You can never deceive your own heart."
Alarmed, Manuel carefully looked around but no one seemed to notice what had happened. The elder’s lips remained tightly sealed, as though he never spoke.
His warriors gathered the criminals again, and the Red Barbarians continued their loud cursing. The elder returned to the group and was led by the Red Barbarians towards a brick kiln. Manuel stood there, his mind in turmoil. The elder glanced back at him before entering the kiln, showing a profound smile.
He blinked hard, looked again, but found that the elder never looked back; he had already blended into the criminals and entered the kiln.
Manuel lowered his head, opened his palms, and they were empty. However, he clearly remembered that the elder had stuffed something into his hand!
"Get back to work! There are countless criminals outside, bring more in," the Red Barbarians yelled. Manuel and his warriors left the valley without a word.
The sky was getting late, and they had to set up camp not far from the Blood Fog and spend the night in the wilderness.
Their warriors complained in hushed whispers. Although the valley was gloomy, it was better than being exposed to the wild. But the Red Barbarians had forcibly driven them out—as always, such complaints would eventually be summed up in one sentence: "Those Red Clan don’t treat us as humans at all!"
Manuel used to be numb when his subordinates spoke such words, but today he suddenly felt a stirring in his heart, and his eyes turned bloodshot.
