Chapter 883: Chapter 467: Invitation to Fame_3
Owen Bertram’s forehead throbbed and three veins bulged: "Your Highness, it’s only because of your honorable status and our intimate comradeship that I’m not punching you right now!"
The Fifth Prince shrugged: "I didn’t believe it either, but look at you...shoving the Saintess of North Ice towards me again..."
Owen Bertram held his forehead, feeling self-trapped: really couldn’t admit that he saw The Saintess of North Ice as a big pit and wanted to push His Highness in to fill it for him...
But then he realized that giving away a woman was indeed a turning point.
Seeing Owen Bertram’s speechless expression, the Fifth Prince chuckled: "Alright, I have told you the rumor, so deal with it. Can you tell me the truth now? What is the hidden danger of marrying the Saintess of North Ice?"
Owen Bertram turned to leave: "I wanted to bring back a great opportunity for you, but instead, you constantly doubt me. You even humiliate me with this absurd rumor. Forget it. I will marry the Saintess and you will regret it later."
Owen Bertram was about to exit but surprisingly the Fifth Prince didn’t stop him. He secretly praised the improvement in his patience. Owen continued his pretence and reluctantly kept going. And so, with his head held high, he walked out. The Fifth Prince did not stop him.
It was the next evening when the Fifth Prince made a sudden visit to Owen Bertram.
Marrying the Saintess of North Ice and obtaining the support from the 36 Tribes of the Northern Region was an irresistible temptation for a prince aiming at the throne. The Fifth Prince managed to suppress his urge for a day and spent the day thoroughly investigating the 36 Tribes with his advisers. Finally, he couldn’t resist approaching Owen Bertram to glean more information.
As he entered, Owen Bertram rolled his eyes: "What brings Your Highness here? I dare not plot against you."
The Fifth Prince laughed awkwardly and apologized: "Please forgive my earlier skepticism. Could you tell me in detail about the matter of the Saintess of North Ice? Can she take a liking to my humble looks?"
Owen Bertram glared at him: "Your Highness has lost much weight recently, and the sun has given you a bronze complexion, making you full of masculine charm. This kind of virile look is precisely what the women of the Northern Plains adore."
The Fifth Prince asked with joy: "Really?"
He was ultimately swindled by Owen in the end.
"Besides, after the Saintess has set the test, as long as you can defeat all the competitors, she won’t have the choice of not marrying. Remember, this is Our Nation of Wu, not her 36 Tribes of the Northern Region. We won’t give her room to regret."
The Fifth Prince nodded: "Indeed. But how can I stand out?"
Owen Bertram patted his chest: "Leave it to me. When the time comes, I’ll help Your Highness eliminate all serious competitors. Then at the last moment, when you stand up to challenge me and I intentionally lose to you, won’t everything fall into place?"
The Fifth Prince’s eyes were sparkling, but he soon asked again: "Why would you help me to this extent?"
"As I said, we are intimate comrades, political allies. With the Saintess of North Ice as your wife, it’s almost guaranteed you’ll be successful in your succession."
The Fifth Prince nodded insistently: "If I manage to secure that position, you, Owen Bertram, will be one of the three ministers!"
Owen Bertram gladly replied: "Thank you, Your Highness!"
....
The day after, the Saintess of North Ice sent word to the Wu Nation that the content of the test had been decided but would not be revealed in order to maintain fairness. There was a minor incident where Adonis Dunn and Page Malcolm fought over the position of the "chief examiner" for this test.
The Emperor naturally took Owen Bertram’s side and chose Adonis Dunn.
For this "Suitors’ Competition", Owen Bertram had to leave the Summit Command Office and head to the capital. Before leaving, he arranged everything properly, particularly reminding William and Donald Lee to guard cautiously.
Although there was no evidence proving that the National Master and Nanni Nation were conspiring to lure him into the capital and launch a counterattack, they had to be prepared just in case.
Several princes had already returned to the capital ahead of time to prepare. The Fifth Prince secretly probed the Emperor’s intention, but the Emperor was reluctant to let him go. After all, without his "fishing buddy", the Emperor would find things less interesting. Who else could he show off his enormous catch to?
The Fifth Prince scoffed inwardly.
Owen Bertram then began his journey—only to be held back by Verna.
"Let go!" Owen was somewhat embarrassed as all his subordinates came to see him off. Verna, you’re more than ten years old, your weight almost surpasses mine and you’re quickly catching up with your second brother. This display is totally indelicate."
"I will not". Ava Bertram stated confidently, "Our brothers have left. Now only you and I are left at home. You’re going to the capital to marry; I must follow you to see my future sister-in-law!"
Owen Bertram glanced at Lily who was not far away: "She taught you to say that, didn’t she? You just want to try the delicious food in the capital!"
He couldn’t mention it outright; lest Verna start to drool.
The embarrassment made Lily shrink. I miss the delicious food in the capital too. As long as the mistress goes, I’ll be able to follow and indulge myself!
Ruffling his little sister’s hair, Owen Bertram relented: "Fine, I’ll take you. Now let go."
"Elder Brother is the best!" Ava Bertram exclaimed jubilantly!
...
Andrew Oamond greeted him thirty miles outside the Capital city, immediately trying to ingratiate himself. He greeted Owen Bertram cheerfully, "Sir, could I have a piece of your wedding cake?"
