Chapter 667: Chapter 411: Beating the Six Realms_3
Lin Ronald stood still as the Emperor waited for every piece of skin on his body to bear the brunt of a hit. Only then did he speak up, "I hereby decree that the Imperial City Department take Lin Ronald into custody and strip him of his position as East Prison Town Commander."
"Moreover, the position of the Horizon Bureau’s Commander has been vacant for a long time. I’ve given it my thought and found it fitting that my dear courtier, Abner Lane, take over. I hereby appoint Abner as the Commander of Horizon Bureau and task him with reorganizing the Bureau."
Abner received the imperial edict without showing any emotion, though he was inwardly irked. He knew the Emperor intended to protect Lin Ronald. To let this major incident pass so lightly wasn’t going to sit well with him.
The emperor brushed them off, saying, "Alright, Uncle has vented his anger, let’s not make a scene anymore. You may all disperse now. Owen Bertram and Kirk stay back."
Crowds shuffled out as Uncle, along with the Imperial City Department guards, took Lin Ronald away in shackles. The Emperor immediately inquired Owen anxiously, "My dear courtier, how is the progress with the Lioyd Sect?"
Owen clenched his teeth against the cold. Indeed, the Emperor really was harsh and ungrateful. Owen endured an "uncalled-for blame", and not only did the Emperor fail to punish the true culprit, but he didn’t console him either, already thinking about his next adventure.
Yet, Owen spoke in full reverence, "Your Majesty, everything is on track. We will surely complete the task within the stipulated deadline."
"Excellent!" The Emperor rejoiced, "Indeed, my dear courtier is reliable. You may take your leave and diligently supervise the Lioyd Sect. Do not disappoint me."
"I obey His Majesty’s command."
After Owen left, the Emperor beckoned the Seventh Prince closer, "Why did you help Owen and his team?"
The Emperor definitely had some doubts about this situation as it contradicted the usual behavior. Lin Ronald and the Ronald Clan were firm supporters of the Seventh Prince.
A hint of hesitation played on the Seventh Prince’s face, but he eventually knelt down to plead, "Your Majesty, I feel cornered. Led by Lin Ronald, the Ronald Clan coerced my mother and me into competing for the Crown Prince’s title. But given Your Majesty’s full reign, I dare not harbor any ulterior motives.
Despite my efforts at hinting or explicit denials, Lin Ronald never listened and forced me to vie for the throne on behalf of the Ronald Clan. This time, I saw an opportunity. Abner and Owen Bertram could stand against the Ronald Clan, so I decided not to follow Lin Ronald’s plan to frame Owen.
Your Majesty, I should be held accountable for my sins, please punish me."
The Emperor nodded slowly, seemingly contemplating the early scramble for the position of Crown Prince. Did they think he, the Emperor, was close to death? Kirk was smart. He didn’t dare confront Lin Ronald openly, and quickly seized the opportunity to shake off Lin Ronald’s manipulation.
"Leave now. From here on, remain in the capital. I’ll have the Imperial City Department discreetly protect you."
"Thank you, Your Majesty."
This matter wouldn’t have passed this smoothly under another Emperor’s reign, given only the mere fact that Lin Ronald secretly supported the Seventh Prince in competing for the Crown Prince’s position needed thorough probing.
But the one currently sitting on the throne brushed it all off instantly. Estimating the time, half a month later his Flying Carriage Palaces would be completed, which filled his heart with excitement.
...
Upon his leave, Owen went to see Abner and Adonis Dunn; with the three of them meeting in Adonis Dunn’s study. Adonis solemnly questioned, "What exactly happened? Did you really dare to starkly manipulate Kirk with puppetry?"
Adonis’s loyalty to the Emperor was still deeply rooted in his heart.
Owen decried, "Master, how can you distrust me like this? I’ve painstakingly plotted all the Southern Border wars, personally suppressing the Magic Wave. For whom have I done all this? If Master doesn’t trust me, I quit. Accept my resignation from all my positions. I’ll take my sister back to Extinct Village!"
Abner slapped him. Owen avoided it but still steamed with annoyance. "What gives Master the right to reproach me? I did everything with good intentions and you’re trying to put the blame on me, just like that, by throwing it all away?"
Owen continued, "Master, you are breaking the heart of your meritorious servant!" He highlighted his righteousness and dissatisfaction.
Adonis asked in a heavy tone, "Lin Ronald is not a fool. Without substantial evidence, how did he dig such a big hole for himself?"
Owen sneered, "Master, are you determined that I am troublesome?"
Adonis showed a sinful expression, ultimately sighing deeply, "Forget it, I don’t want to know anymore."
"What do you mean by ’you don’t want to know anymore’? You are convinced I am problematic, where is the justice in this?" Owen bore off continuously until a stern glance from Abner stopped him.
"You can’t blame Master. There are indeed many questionable factors in this matter. Let’s not talk about anything else, why would Kirk cooperate with you rather than Lin Ronald?" Abner asked.
Owen thought for a moment then shared what Kirk had told the Emperor earlier. However, Abner and Adonis weren’t as easy to fool as the ridiculous Emperor. After some contemplation, they commented, "Though the logic seems sound, it still defies common sense."
Adonis yearned to voice his concerns but eventually decided to end the conversation about it.
Both he and Abner had interacted with Kirk before. He was a young man filled with ambition. How could he willingly withdraw from the competition for the Crown Prince out of fear?
Moreover, from their perspective, this matter was more transparent. Kirk’s excuse was that with the support of Owen and Abner, he could shake off Lin Ronald’s control –– but Abner knew they hadn’t promised Kirk anything.
Master Dunn didn’t want to proceed with the discussion, mainly due to a looming dread –– the eventual answer he did not want to hear. But for now, whether it was the Summit River Line or the Southern Border war, Owen’s expertise was indispensable.
When Owen left Master Dunn’s residence, it was midday. Exiting, he found the fierce sunshine slightly dazzling, but it made him feel comfortable. He shaded his brows with his hand, looked at the sky, and found the wide openness and clearness calming.
