Chapter 587: Chapter 389: It’s All Connected_2
Owen Bertram and Glenn Mitchell were alone in the carriage when Owen finally asked, "The Dragon and Snake List is over, what are your plans, Brother Mitchell? If you have none, why not return to the Summit Metropolitan Office? Maria and Tabitha are both quite lonely, they could use some company."
Glenn was sullen. He, who was once the most promising figure from an impoverished background, had sought to serve the Lord. His final humiliation came from the fact that he was taken in only because of his sister’s influence.
Was there no dignity left?
Owen, in his capacity as a senior official, was also distressed. Having recruited someone as stubborn as Glenn into the organization, if things didn’t go well, it could upset the stability of the supervision office. This fellow was clearly not the type to get along with colleagues.
But Verna, indeed, had been very lonely this past year. As he became increasingly busy, his time for her diminished. She needed a playmate.
Glenn sternly nodded in agreement.
Owen thought for a moment and continued, "Brother Mitchell, you are already in the Fifth Great Domain. Locally, this level of cultivation is more than enough for a revered Lord. However, as a newcomer, promoting you directly to that position might be met with resistance from other officials, and it wouldn’t be beneficial for you either."
Unfamiliar with the hierarchy of positions, Glenn took some time, then asked, "And a Prescott... what would the salary be?"
Owen understood this mentality very well and pat his shoulder, saying, "It will certainly be enough for Brother Mitchell to provide Maria with a decent life."
Glenn secretly heaved a sigh of relief.
Then he cast his gaze outside the carriage. Two young girls, one chubby and one skinny, ran excitedly down the street. One hand was filled with candied gourds, the other with sour apricots. Their youthful exuberance pushed them ahead of the carriage.
Twelve military officers in their Horizon Bureau uniforms surrounded the carriage for protection. Beyond them, in the bustling crowd, Glenn could make out at least another six covert agents who, with the carriage and the two girls at its center, created one large circle.
The lowlifes that loitered on the streets took one look at this setup and promptly distanced themselves, wary of getting involved—it was certain that an incident like last time, where Maria had ventured out alone and been targeted by kidnappers, wouldn’t occur again.
He and Owen needn’t keep their eyes on the girls at all times. They could sit in the carriage and enjoy the leisurely journey; the two sisters could play to their hearts’ content without any fear.
A government official patrolled the intersection of the bustling street. As the carriage approached, they swiftly cleared the way, chasing off any vendors who blocked passage. They then stood on the side of the road with a pleasing smile, regardless of the dignitary’s response from within the carriage.
In this moment, Glenn found himself completely relaxed for the first time in years. He subconsciously followed Owen’s lead, lifting the teacup before him and taking a gentle sip. For the first time in his life, he discovered an array of delightful flavors amidst the normally bitter tea.
It dawned on Glenn: This is the taste of power, isn’t it. No wonder there have been countless individuals throughout history who have been driven mad by it... Indeed, it is very addictive.
Upon reaching Riverfront Street, Owen stopped the carriage to take a stroll with the girls. Truth is, by this time, Lily was already full from the various snacks they’ve enjoyed along the way. Owen had visibly eaten more, yet he was still stuffing his face with street food at Riverfront Street. Lily couldn’t help but look up to him: Truly amazing!
However, not long after Owen started walking, he felt a disturbance from Gourd’s elder brother: Let me out! I want to play in the river; my little one is still waiting for me.
Owen was apprehensive: Don’t be absurd. I’ll remind you again, this is the Capital...
Those fellows can’t see me! The gourd elder brother emphasized his power again.
Water surged in the Gourd space as Gourd’s elder brother threw a tantrum. Owen sighed and shook his head. Elder brother said: Nothing happened the last time, don’t be scared, Elder Brother.
Owen was helpless and could only negotiate: You can play for a while, but when I call you, you need to come back immediately.
The elder brother interrupted him: I understand. Stop nagging!
In his sleeve, Owen stretched his hand into the Gourd space, and sharply smacked the Gourd elder brother over the head. How dare he be impatient with his elder brother! Elder brother yelped, his eyes watering as he semi-floated in the water: Elder Brother, you hit me!
Owen rubbed his temples. Between the siblings, they all seemed to have reached the most challenging age to manage. He quickly found an opportunity to release the elder brother into the defensive river. Elder brother swam away very quickly and Owen’s ear finally gained a moment of respite.
However, it seems that the elder brother was "naïve" in thinking that the second brother just wanted to play in the river. Little Loach went straight to the Beast Cage managed by Lord Ruibin. The double-headed Eel had been feeling uncomfortable of late. When Lord Ruibin once again appeared in its field of vision and it felt the oppressive nature inherent to him, it belched out a string of bubbles in satisfaction: Finally, someone who gets me...
Lord Ruibin laid both his enormous heads on the ground, raising the end of his tail that was electrifying. It was serving as a lantern for the revered lord.
As Little Loach approached, its body grew bigger and bigger, quickly exceeding fifty feet! Actually, it had grown extremely quickly over this period, especially after it ate the Pig Carp.
Only in large rivers could it fully stretch out its body and swim freely. Upon reaching Ruibin, it flicked its tail, causing the double-headed Eel’s face to swell up. Ruibin remained motionless, internally praising: Surely enough, befitting of a revered lord, indeed ruthless in his attack!
