Chapter 517: Chapter 369: Capital City’s Moat_2
Verna actually preferred these kind of street snacks. Even though she was now in the Capital City and her elder brother held a high position, she never actively asked to eat at the famous restaurants since the consumption of these could be easily afforded by her elder brother.
When they went out in the Capital, they used Ferdinand’s mechanical horse-drawn carriage. With wheels stretching out below it, the carriage moved smoothly, quickly, and flexibly. In the streets of the capital, there were many such mechanical horse-drawn carriages, most of which were even more ostentatious than Ferdinand’s vehicle.
However, in the eyes of an expert mechanism master like Owen Bertram, those high-ranking families’ mechanical carriages focused more on superficial extravagance and were inferior in performance compared to Ferdinand’s creation.
Owen had even encountered some mechanical carriages marked with the insignia of the Lioyd Sect on the streets, each one very luxurious. Owen secretly chuckled, believing that they were being taken advantage of by the Lioyd Sect.
The streets of the Capital were bustling with people everywhere, and carriages moved at a rather slow pace. Close to leaving the city, a person suddenly dashed in, almost colliding with their carriage. The person was startled and fell in front of the carriage, looking like a frightened deer. It turned out to be a young girl, about the same age as Tabitha.
However, compared to Verna’s obviously well-nourished appearance, the girl was thin and appeared malnourished, her face full of terror and shock.
Several burly men followed, chasing and shouting, "Catch the thief!"
"Don’t let her escape! She dares to steal from Lord Roc’s house. Let’s break this little girl’s legs!"
The girl hurriedly tried to escape but was surrounded by the men.
Just when she was about to cry, she cried out with determination, "You’re lying! I didn’t steal anything!"
The few men sniggered and closed in on her menacingly, "Whether you stole or not isn’t for you to say. Let’s take her to see the official!"
"I won’t go! You are not good people." The girl backed away and then bumped into another burly man, who laughed loudly as he gripped her collar like a hawk catching a small bird.
"Let me go! You bad men!" The girl struggled, kicking and punching like a weak she-beast, but she couldn’t break free.
The shopkeepers nearby watched but chose not to intervene. Some kind-hearted ones dared not cause trouble and just sighed secretly.
Suddenly, the girl bit the burly man’s wrist. However, as these men were accustomed to doing such things, they had anticipated it. Another hand skillfully gripped the girl’s chin, and the man laughed heartily.
In the mechanical carriage, Verna tugged gently at her brother’s clothes, "Brother, save her, please."
Owen Bertram looked at his sister and asked, "Why? She stole. It’s right for them to catch her and take her to the official."
But Verna said, "She didn’t steal. She’s a good person. Those men are the bad ones. They definitely won’t take her to the official."
Owen laughed and asked, "How do you know?"
Tabitha opened her mouth but couldn’t find a reason, yet she stubbornly shook her head, "I just know."
Owen’s heart wavered, but he asked again, "This is the Capital. Everywhere are people of power. Behind these wicked servants, there might be some high-ranking official or a royal family member. If we meddle in others’ affairs, we might cause unnecessary trouble."
Verna hesitated for a moment before lowering her head pitifully, "Then... Let’s not intervene then. I don’t want to cause trouble for you, brother."
Owen chuckled and mussed Verna’s hair, messing up her bun. He then stepped out of the carriage.
As the men were about to leave with the girl, they suddenly felt an overwhelming terrifying force. One was sent flying, rolling wildly on the ground.
The man who had grasped the girl felt a severe pain in his arm and was horrified to see that it was now bent at an abnormal angle. The girl in his grasp had been taken away by someone else.
"Ah——" He screamed in pain, only to receive another blow to his face. Half of his face swelled up, and his teeth shattered.
Owen easily recognized that these men were wicked villains who specialized in human trafficking and had only been teasing his sister just now.
However, it was interesting that Verna had been able to determine that the girl was innocent and that these men were evil people.
"Who dares to interfere with our Sky Roar Sect’s business? Are you tired of living?" The men didn’t dare go forward but threatened menacingly, their faces fierce.
Owen first sent the girl to his own mechanical horse-drawn carriage, then turned around and showed his token, "I am the Commander of the Summit Office. Regardless of whoever is behind you, let them come to me if they have the ability!"
Any street gang that engaged in human trafficking would undoubtedly commit heinous crimes. Once Owen got involved and saved the girl, he certainly wouldn’t end there. By revealing his identity on purpose, he intended to eradicate the gang completely.
The burly men, with spiteful looks on their faces, assisted each other as they fled, "An out-of-town government official like you doesn’t know how deep the waters in the Capital run. Just you wait, you’re dead for sure! Your whole family is doomed!"
Owen’s face turned cold, and with a fierce grip, he crushed the legs of the burly men, leaving them screaming like slaughtered pigs. Although they dared not say anything more, they hurriedly crawled into a nearby alley.
In the streets, shopkeepers who knew the background of the Sky Roar Sect shook their heads and sighed. These days, there weren’t many officials willing to help the common people; today, there would be one fewer to save.
