Chapter 384: Chapter 334: Cave Lake Navy_3

...

In the Naval Military Harbor, the camp commander was reporting to Governor Rod George, "Sir, I’ve done as you instructed."

Rod George asked, "Did it enrage him?"

The commander let out a grin, "I barely stopped myself from cursing him out in Owen Bertram’s face. If he can swallow that insult, he’s not a man but a turtle."

"Well done, you may leave."

After the commander left, Rod George activated a Communication Talisman with his spiritual energy, "I’ve done what you asked me to do. I’ve avenged you. Don’t backstab me now."

...

The bright moon illuminated the night sky, casting a unique beauty on the lake’s surface.

A massive creature slowly emerged from beneath the calm surface. It glanced at the military harbor from a distance, noticing its slack security just as it was during the day. There were only a few sentries on the docks and gun platforms.

Meanwhile, the sounds of gambling were even louder from the distant barracks.

Little Loach dived deeper and swam towards the entrance of the military harbor. According to the regulations of the Wood Dynasty, the waters surrounding the military harbor should have a complete Array set up, and the entrances and exits should be filled with enough "hidden reefs" of varying sizes. The safe passages within the military harbor were confidential and could not be revealed.

However, Little Loach saw none of these underwater.

When it reached the position of the harbor’s water gate, there should have been three magical iron nets, but there was only one, and it was two levels lower in quality.

Little Loach shrank its body and easily passed through the holes in the iron net. If the net had been of the required magical-grade, it would have been imbued with various Prohibition, making its Divine Powers of size alteration ineffective.

As Owen Bertram’s soul attached itself to his second brother’s body, they entered the harbor and swam around. His gaze fell on the four gun platforms. After a closer observation, he shook his head. Each platform should have been equipped with four Heavy Crossbows, two Rune Array Cannons, and one Long-arm Rune Launcher, but they were all mere shells, lifeless imitations without magical properties.

"Rod George refuses to let the Military Equipment Department’s artificers work with me, mainly because they know the actual state of the harbor. He fears that the embezzlement of military funds will be exposed."

Little Loach had swum around the entire military harbor and noticed that, out of the four gun platforms, only two Heavy Crossbows, one Rune Array Cannon, and two Long-arm Rune Launchers were real.

The six-foot-long Crossbow Arrows were thick as bowls, with arrowheads made of Spirit Jade. Intricate Arrays were engraved from the arrowhead to the arrow shaft, with a range of over thirty miles. They were available in varieties like "Penetrating Armor Arrow" and "Explosive Arrow", which could sink Iron-Shell Battleships in one direct hit.

The Rune Array Cannon was even more powerful. It relied on a mixture of talismans and Array structures in the cannon’s mount, unleashing thick beams of light with Spirit Jade power. It was the weapon of choice for naval warfare, and each unit was extremely expensive.

Long-arm Rune Launchers were similar to Stone-throwing Machines but had a longer range. They fired powerful talismans that exploded above enemy ships, raining down numerous "child talismans" to inflict massive casualties on enemy sailors. Although the Long-arm Rune Launchers cost less to make, they needed a large number of talismans, which were several times more expensive than the launcher itself.

"How much Spirit Jade has Rod George embezzled?"

As it approached midnight, Owen Bertram was alarmed: the sentries changed shifts, the previous group had gone back to the barracks, and the next group never came.

Instead, the gambling noises in the barracks became even louder.

Struck by a sudden idea, Owen Bertram took control of his second brother’s body and, like a nimble fat snake, quickly climbed the steps of a gun platform.

There was a Rune Array Cannon before him. Little Loach’s mouth gaped wide and swallowed it whole.

Then, it moved on to the second platform, swallowing a Heavy Crossbow, followed by the third platform, where it swallowed a Long-arm Rune Launcher.

After doing all that, Owen Bertram slithered down the steps and back into the water, just in time to see the second group of sentries coming out from the barracks, cursing and grumbling. They must have lost money in gambling. Without hesitation, it swam away from the military harbor.

After swimming several miles away and hearing the chaos caused by his prank at the military harbor, Owen Bertram couldn’t help but reveal a cold smile.

Rod George arrived at the harbor an hour later. He had spent the night at a mistress’s house in the city and was woken up by a Communication Talisman. As he rushed back and saw the empty spots where the Heavy Crossbows, Rune Array Cannons, and Long-arm Rune Launchers had been, his face turned ashen. He furiously beat the sentries with his whip, yelling, "Useless!"

These large-scale Magical Instruments were brought by the artificers from the Military Equipment Department and placed directly on the gun platforms, or else they would have turned into "shells" like the rest.

But even Rod George felt that to have such large Magical Instruments stolen so blatantly from the military harbor was an enormous issue. He immediately ordered a thorough investigation.

...

Owen Bertram waited until the next day to contact Master Lane, requesting the nearby Horizon Bureau to investigate the corruption of the Cave Lake Navy.

Within half a Shichen (an hour), Lane’s order was placed before Summit Commanding Officer Murphy of the Horizon Bureau in York County.

Murphy chuckled, waved his subordinates away, and took out a Communication Talisman, "Rodney, would you like to hear an interesting story about the Commander of Summit? Hahaha!"
