Chapter 184: Chapter 182: Secret Mansion_1
About half a day later, the Bat Taoist came out from the Royal Palace, his face beaming. Owen Bertram knew that he had gained the full support of Prince Henry - which meant a huge amount of treasure material was coming his way!
My treasure material!
Owen Bertram quietly followed behind. It was nearly dark now and they wouldn’t make it back to the Little Merchant Gathering. Bat Taoist would likely find an inn to lodge for the night - but as soon as he stepped out, he was taken away by the palace gatekeepers and settled across the street in a residence.
Owen Bertram eyed the situation and, as a caution, decided not to investigate further.
At night, the Bat Taoist revelled merrily within the courtyard, appraising the dancing girls’ costumes and the inevitable connection to their body language, enjoying his drunken stupor.
Meanwhile, Owen Bertram stood outside in the cold night air, hiding like a mouse from the patrolling teams that periodically swarmed the palace surroundings.
It was utterly unfair.
A modest carriage pulled up quietly at the back door of the yard. A middle-aged scholar stepped down and entered. After the scholar entered, the music within ceased. It was a shichen later that the scholar finally came out, got on the carriage, and departed unobtrusively.
Owen Bertram swiftly abandoned the Bat Taoist and followed the middle-aged scholar instead.
The carriage entered a mansion in the west of the city. Owen Bertram recognized it: the Collins Mansion.
He circled the mansion once and chose a secluded spot to break in.
As soon as he landed, Owen Bertram felt that something was different. The vital energy of heaven and earth in the air was extremely rich -and mysteriously confined within the wall, perceptible from the exterior.
Between the wall and the mansion building, there was a space of about ten yards, planted with various flowers and plants. However, using some unknown technique, all these "flowers and plants" had been demonized, their petals instantly transforming into gaping maws full of razor-sharp teeth, lunging towards Owen Bertram.
In the middle of the courtyard, atop a tall tower was what seemed like a rotating bronze mirror emitting a streak of spiritual light.
Owen Bertram muttered under his breath, throwing up the Flying Shield swiftly in front of the Mechanical Dao Soldier.
Boom!
The spiritual light hit the Flying Shield, a terrifying force sent the Mechanical Dao Soldier flying, banging heavily into the wall, seemingly loosened all over.
He sprung back to his feet, propelling himself high into the air with a whoosh, intending to jump over the wall.
But above the wall, an irregular silver-blue spiritual light surfaced, sealing off the entire sky.
Owen Bertram figured that both the Slaying God Breaker and Spiritual Pomegranate Sniper might not be able to break this seal, and immediately activated the Five-toothed Flying Sword!
Boom——
The huge flying sword and the seal collided heavily. The seal was slightly inferior and cracked consecutively at the position of the flying sword. The Mechanical Dao Soldier sprung out. Owen Bertram, frustrated, was not willing to leave like this. Behind him, four Spider Arms unfolded, and the Gatling Version of Slaying God Breaker launched a full-speed attack!
Whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh...
It wasn’t until the Mechanical Dao Soldier fell under the wall and lost its angle of fire that several thousand explosive crossbow arrows had poured out!
Boom boom boom! The mansion was swept by continuous booming sounds. The demonized flowers and plants within ten yards were incinerated, reduced to ashes.
The Mechanical Dao Soldier stepped on the Flying Shield underneath him, disappearing into the night with a whoosh.
The mansion was momentarily chaotic but responded with composure. Swiftly, cultivators extinguished the inferno and skilled array masters began to weave the sky seal anew.
In the meantime, four teams separately embarked in four directions to search.
In the dark, orders were issued. The City Protection Array of the entire Prefecture City activated, aiming to encase the "assassin". But the Flying Shield was too fast. The Mechanical Dao Soldier had already escaped.
In his outpost, Owen Bertram gritted his teeth: How could a modest looking mansion possess such formidable power?
"Magpie, come back!"This magpie was unusually large, so of course it couldn’t have followed the Mechanical Dao soldiers into the Prefecture City. Instead, it stayed outside, causing havoc among the field mice and sparrows in the wild. This made it a real "beneficial bird" for the farmers living around the city.
At Owen Bertram’s command, the magpie’s eyes instantly flared red. Flapping its wings fiercely, it accelerated towards the outpost. The Little Ghost hiding within its neck was nearly flung out with the speed. A ghostly arm stretched out long before it sprang back like a rubber band, allowing Little Ghost to burrow back into the feathers on the Magpie’s neck.
When the magpie put in the real effort, its speed was only a bit less than that of the Flying Shield.
In just a shichen and half, it returned to the outpost - Owen Bertram didn’t allow it in, mainly to avoid startling the soldiers.
A small flying bug fluttered out of the outpost and burrowed into the magpie’s feathers.
While burrowing, it bumped into the ghost.
As Little Ghost and the bug stared at each other, Owen Bertram cursed under his breath. He knew that the magpie had "sheltered" this strange Little Ghost, and originally planned to send it to the Ghost Zone, but the investigation had been delayed.
Now it seemed that Little Ghost and the magpie had got along well, it even seemed like they had developed a bond of sorts.
The bug was controlled by Owen Bertram’s Spirit Seed, making it the best choice to infiltrate that mansion.
The magpie, carrying the bug, returned to Darnell Manor.
During this time, Owen Bertram had read the memories of many cultivators, completely filling in his knowledge of the basic common sense of the Cultivation World. He also understood the unique advantage of the "Soul Puppetry Skill" given to him by his brother:
Within the Four Seas and Eight Desolation, most of the puppetry spells required the puppet to have a certain level of strength.
If the puppet was too weak, casting the puppetry spell could result in the puppet breaking apart.
For example, in Owen Bertram’s knowledge, those higher-level puppetry spells could only be used on larger insects like cicadas or beetles at the very least.
Only his "Soul Puppetry Skill" could be used on small flying bugs.
When the magpie returned to Darnell Manor, the day had already dawned. Due to last night’s citywide search for the assassin, not only was the City Protection Array still activated, but the city gates hadn’t opened either.
Outside each gate of the Prefecture City, long queues had formed and there were sounds of complaints everywhere.
Lately, the number of times the city got sealed had increased.
With the City Protection Array in place, the bug couldn’t fly in. After waiting another half shichen, the City Protection Array finally withdrew, and the city gates slowly opened. The bug flew over the city walls, passed many houses, and fell into the mansion.
Thankfully, Owen Bertram vengefully blew up all the enchanted plants in the garden last night, otherwise, the bug might not have made it through this checkpoint.
The bug fluttered around, observing from above. It followed the middle-aged scholar from last night as he hurriedly entered a large house.
In the room was a bed on which lay a frail-looking man. After the middle-aged scholar entered the room, he bowed with a fist-in-palm salute, "Your Highness."
The skinny man rubbed his temples and sat up, asking "Have they caught him?"
"Forgive me for my incompetence," the middle-aged scholar apologized, bowing his head.
Owen Bertram was surprised: Your Highness?
In the entire Darnell Manor, the only one entitled to be addressed as "Your Highness" was Prince Henry. But wasn’t Prince Henry supposed to be in the Royal Palace? The Bat Taoist had visited him yesterday and came out all radiant - wouldn’t that only be possible because he received some promise personally from Prince Henry?
Owen Bertram realized: The one in the Royal Palace is a body double.
No wonder after the Bat Taoist visited the Royal Palace during the day, Henry’s trusted middle-aged scholar had another deep conversation with the Bat Taoist at night.
However, this "highness" before him was skinny, sharp-faced, and his eyes were gloomy - there was no sign of "Henry" about him.
He simply waved a hand: "Forget it, things have been chaotic lately, just take care."
