Chapter 137: Chapter 135: Heavenly Eye (Seventh Update)_1
Owen Bertram slept peacefully that night, unaware that his unintentional act had adverted a major disaster at the outpost. If the Mountain Master launched an attack, he might be able to take his sister and escape, but the military officers would likely not be so lucky.
The outpost, located outside the village, was a safe place to rest as the giant beasts didn’t venture here.
In the wee hours, a warm current came from Little Loach, and Owen successfully ignited the fifth meridian. Moreover, a special Divine Skill emerged in his mind: the Sky Destiny Armor Skill!
It was the innate divine skill of that softshell turtle. By consuming shells of mollusks and turtles, one could form an armor around their body.
After being enhanced by Little Loach, not only shells could be consumed, but also metals! Also, this armor could be hidden inside the body in normal conditions and appear automatically to protect the body when danger approaches.
In terms of defense, as long as things are consumed in sufficient quantity and high grade, this "Sky Destiny Armor" at its peak strength could offer protection equivalent to a Tire-5 Magic Weapon.
Nonetheless, Owen Bertram didn’t show much interest in this Divine Skill. The reason was simple: Even after its modification by Little Loach, it couldn’t avoid the fundamental drawback. Once the Sky Destiny Armor was donned, there would be an abrupt drop in speed and agility.
Indeed, this Divine Skill had excellent defensive capabilities once in battle at the same level, it was almost as if it made the bearer "immune to attack". However, this didn’t match Owen’s self-proclaimed image of a "carefree", "elegant", "handsome", "nimble" swordsman!
Of course, he was well aware that he often had to face opponents who were more advanced than him. Given this, the protection offered by this divine skill was limited. Moreover, due to the sluggishness, it was likely easier to get attacked.
Although the Sky Destiny Armor Skill was not exactly beneficial for him, the fact that he managed to ignite the fifth meridian made Owen satisfied. He turned over contentedly and went back to sleep for a while.
...
When Owen was resting, the Mechanical Dao Soldiers would automatically patrol the surrounding area.
Early in the morning, the Mechanical Dao Soldiers noticed someone in the cave at the entrance of the village.
But without Owen’s commands, they wouldn’t make any further moves. Owen, through the eyes of the Mechanical Dao Soldiers, observed the situation in the cave in detail.
When creating these Mechanical Dao Soldiers, Owen had given them a telescopic vision function. As this was not a standard method in the Eight Desolations World, Owen was able to secretly observe the situation inside the cave through the Mechanical Dao Soldiers without raising any suspicion. Not even the Mountain Master who was in the cave noticed.
"Impressive!". That was Owen’s first thought. If these people bore any ill intentions, they would be tough enemies to handle.
Since they sneaked into the entrance of the village quietly, their intentions certainly were not good. With a sigh, Owen thought to himself, I’m naturally not fond of fights, yet my opponents keep showing up.
"Is it because of Burning Hillock?", Owen speculated based on common sense, unaware that he was off to a wrong start.
The subordinates of the Mountain Master had tried to expel the poisonous gas in their body all night, but the poison unexpectedly proved to be particularly tenacious, and they didn’t manage to expel it completely by dawn.
With no other option, the Mountain Master distributed one spiritual pill to each of them out of his own pocket. They now had to spend the morning in the cave to continue the detoxification.
This left the Mechanical Dao Soldiers lingering around the area. Feeling a bit annoyed, Owen thought that if the soldiers were tasked just to monitor the situation, one pair of eyes would be enough... wait! Owen had a flash of insight. Couldn’t he make use of the "Heavenly Eye" that was ubiquitous in his previous world?
Owen immediately got to work.
Creating an enhanced version of the Five-toothed Battleship Artifact had consumed a lot of treasure material, leaving Elder Brother quite depleted. However, crafting the "Heavenly Eye" required very little material.
He just had to individually craft the eyes of the Mechanical Dao Soldiers and then add an array that was linked to himself, just like the ones used by the Mechanical Dao Soldiers.
He was essentially creating a wireless surveillance device.
However, due to his own cultivation limitations, he couldn’t maintain such a connection from a long distance. After quickly crafting the first Heavenly Eye, Owen estimated that the effective connection distance was around ten miles.
After some contemplation, he started even a new experiment: creating a "Repeater".
Then, one Heavenly Eye could connect to up to five Repeaters. Any more than that would cause a severe lag and a significant attenuation of the "signal", making it unusable.
This would allow for an effective connection distance of sixty miles between the Heavenly Eye and himself, which was just about enough. The distance from Extinct Village to County Town was approximately fifty miles.
As the fabrication of the Heavenly Eye was simple, Owen made a large batch of them all at once. He then gave them to the Mechanical Dao Soldiers who installed them around the village.
Then Commander Bertram had the Mechanical Dao Soldiers set off towards Quinn Base to install a few more.
All these "heavenly eyes" were perfectly camouflaged, blending seamlessly with the surrounding trees and rocks.
Owen, for a split second, had an illusion that he had the whole world in his grasp. He chuckled and went out to find Little Loach.
Little Loach had moved from the Hunshui River to Mengjiang. It had been getting a good amount of nutrients and was growing bigger. The golden scale under its neck was glinting brightly.
He instructed Little Loach to go forage, and then he strolled towards the Gourd Vine. After the daily watering, he looked up at the seven gourds, delightful with their growth.
They were all about the same size, measuring around five to six feet.
The skin had also turned from green to deep yellow, indicating they were on the brink of ripeness. But then, he suddenly recalled that they looked the same a few days ago and muttered, "Why haven’t they grown in the past few days?"
Gourd Elder was secretly cursing: Those little rascals!
In the beginning, none of them were willing to ripe first. I was forced to take the lead. After seeing that one member, every single one got greedy and started scrambling for nutrients.
The result is this: They’ve divided the nutrients among themselves, thus stunting everyone’s growth.
Gourd Elder glanced bitterly at Owen’s lower body: You’re of no help either. When you divide the nutrients among seven, it’s too diluted.
Owen pursed his lips. The plans for the luxurious house for Little Loach would have to wait.
He turned and left. The seven Gourds started quarreling again, each accusing the other of snatching more nutrients. Gourd Elder growled in frustration. The six younger brothers banded against him, "We’ve given way to you for so long, but you’ve dilly-dallied and been unwilling to ripen. Since that’s the case, we, as younger brothers, won’t be modest anymore."
"You can’t get enough nutrients for yourself, and now you want to blame us?"
"We gave you a chance, but you didn’t use it. So stop acting like the elder brother!"
Gourd Elder: ...
Owen went back to the outpost under the pretext of "handling official duties", which was actually just hiding in his room to monitor the various locations.
By the cave, the subordinates of the Mountain Master had finally expelled the remaining poison and had regained their vitality.
The Mountain Master was full of ambition, planning to attack the outpost in the evening and capture Owen!
However, the Heavenly Eye could only see, not hear. Owen, thus, was unaware of their plan, and he became bored after watching for a while. The Mechanical Dao Soldiers had already finished installing the Heavenly Eyes around Quinn Base.
