Chapter 1195: Chapter 465 Hugo_1
The only source of slaves in the vicinity of Abigail City was General Hugo. However, with a monthly quota of a hundred strong slaves, Hugo could barely manage his own needs, let alone distribute to his subordinates. Judging by the secretive manner of these two individuals, the source of these slave-bloodmeals was anything but reputable.
Owen Bertram felt more and more suspicious about Ghost Chariot General’s fixed monthly purchase of slaves, leading him to caution against hasty decisions.
The town was full of wild demons attracted by the reputation of the challenge - the Demonic Hero Pass. Therefore, the following morning, Lord Bertram and his entourage blended into the crowd and arrived at the main entrance of the Ghost Chariot Guard headquarters. Even from a distance, they were able to see the two massive rocks, known as the Red Horse Life Gate, standing across from each other like mirror images.
The two towering stones reached a height of about 500 feet, giving them the stature of mountains rather than merely ’large rocks’. Their ’backs’ were covered in strange twisted trees and layers of ancient vines, resembling spider webs. However, the faces of the stones facing each other remained remarkably smooth after countless years, without a single fissure.
Directly opposite the Red Horse and Life Gate, the headquarters was built on an area of nearly a hundred acres. The entrance led to a vast open square, which was now divided into four checkpoints by the dark red aura of a demon array. A straight tunnel, piercing through the center of the array, led directly to the main entrance of the Ghost Chariot Guard once all these checkpoints were cleared.
Some of the arriving wild demons had already rushed into the Demonic Hero Pass. The light in the demonic array instantly increased in intensity, projecting images in real-time, showcasing the specific events happening within.
On the surface, Bertram, like the other wild demons, watched the outcomes of the challengers, but he was actually observing the Ghost Chariot Guard headquarters in secret.
Two gargantuan stone beasts flanked the main gate. To the left was a row of hitching posts, and beast statues were perched on the corners of the wall and the ridges of the roof. All of these were actually potent demon beasts under a seal, some in their true bodies, some in their spirit forms. Unquestionably, they monitored the entire headquarters - anyone attempting to sneak in from any direction would be instantly exposed and subject to a frenzied attack.
Under the wall, a variety of demon plants filled the top of the wall, much like climbing tigers and roses.
However, the most troubling issue for Bertram was that there were four lookout towers on the perimeter wall of the headquarters, each hanging a demon lantern. Regardless of whether it was day or night, the demon lanterns surveyed the entire headquarters. Not even a puppet with special abilities could escape their scrutiny if it invaded the headquarters.
Similar measures were found in the Horizon Bureau and other government offices. However, these protective measures were now mostly ornamental in many places, often sabotaged by insiders.
It was only after Hugo took office that Ghost Chariot Guard instituted the four demon lanterns. Although Bertram had great confidence in the "Butterfly Transformation," he didn’t want to test it on himself. He glanced back at Santa, Magpie, and the Mesmerizing Demon... It was clear that Santa, the predecessor, was not under anyone’s control. As for Magpie... Moving on.
After weighing the options, he concluded that the Mesmerizing Demon was the most suitable choice.
At the moment, a demon had already reached the fourth checkpoint in the Demonic Hero Pass! The wild demons in the surroundings clapped and cheered, hoping that he could persevere and break through the four checkpoints in one go. However, the demon soldiers of the Ghost Chariot Guard seemed quite calm. Over these days, there had been tens of thousands of wild demons attempting the challenge! A few hundred had made it to the fourth checkpoint, but seizing a gold seal of Prescott from the grasp of the general was never going to be easy.
The challenger demon still had many companions. Among them was a goat demon with a big white beard, his age indistinguishable. He tore off his shirt, revealing his muscular upper body. He then took out a large drum from his Storage Brocade Pouch and started drumming to cheer on his fellow demon! The rhythmic drumming added to the excitement and enthusiasm of the cheering crowd.
Unfortunately, even after half an incense stick had burned, the luminosity at the fourth checkpoint withdrew like a receding tide. The side door of the fourth checkpoint opened, and that demon walked out, looking disappointed: "What a pity..."
"Aw," the wild demons watching let out a collective sigh of disappointment.
Bertram said to the Mesmerizing Demon, "You should give it a try." The Mesmerizing Demon, always docile, walked obediently to the front. The excitement among the wild demons picked up once again: "A formidable challenger is taking on the pass!"
But, Bertram and his team stood out among the wild demons due to their suppressed realms. Many fellow demons had already noticed them. The Mesmerizing Demon’s current domain was restricted to early Tire-5, and with such strength, she should be able to take the position of Prescott with ease.
If even she failed, it would indicate that the Ghost Chariot General was deliberately making things difficult, with no intention of handing over the Prescott position to the wild demons.
The Mesmerizing Demon, only carrying out the master’s orders, paid no attention to the onlooking demons. Her small figure entered the Demonic Hero Pass and effortlessly cleared the first checkpoint, followed by the second, and third, delaying not even a moment before walking into the fourth checkpoint with ease.
Perhaps the goat demon just enjoyed playing the drums. Seeing the Mesmerizing Demon enter the fourth checkpoint, he immediately beat his distinctively angular muscles to the drum beats. But after just three beats, he saw the light of the fourth checkpoint, having stopped countless wild demons, open up. The Mesmerizing Demon had already walked out of the fourth checkpoint and stood charmingly at the main gate of the headquarters with her big round, blood-red eyes.
The Ghost Chariot Guard was in chaos. A Prescott who was on duty trembled all over his body, charging back into the headquarters while shouting, "General, a beautiful woman has passed the fourth checkpoint!"
