Chapter 66: All Hers

The entire walk into the heart of the Montclair Estate, Leonor realized Gideon addressed the place they were going to as ’her wing’ or ’her room’. She didn’t know what to expect but assumed she would be sleeping next to the duke each night. Even though he valued privacy, he had retrieved her for a reason.

Except his insistence that he would never touch her rose to the surface of her thoughts again and it would most likely be strange sleeping next to someone you never had a more intimate relationship with before. He seemed to be on guard with her as well.

Gideon’s eyes were wide in response to Leonor’s question and he wasn’t quite sure how to navigate what she had just asked.

"Correct," Gideon finally responded. "This room will be yours. His grace’s quarters are in another wing. I will show them to you at a future date if you would like to see them."

It took Gideon a moment to respond to her because he had that conversation with Desmond in the past. When the duke requested a room be set up for Leonor, Gideon was surprised. Leonor was someone the duke cherished based on information given to Gideon by King Stephano.

However, the complicated situation about who he was and his insistence on hiding his true self from Leonor was brought up. He wouldn’t be able to sleep without bandages covering his face if they shared a room. He would never relax.

"Thank you for the information," Leonor said. "Then I suppose I will see you another time."

He gave her a slight bow.

"Please don’t hesitate if you have future questions," Gideon said.

When Leonor was finally by herself, she looked around the room slowly, taking in the opulence of the space.

There were cream-colored walls and ceilings that practically touched the sky. A chandelier was attached to the ceiling but it didn’t have candles on it. Instead, pieces of glass hung from it.

Leonor knew it must sparkle when the sun hit it just right. She would look forward to seeing that at some point.

Three large rectangular windows lined the wall and went to the ceiling. Each window had light green curtains on either side. On the center window, there was a set of double doors that opened to a balcony. It would be another place she explored when it was light outside.

Deeper in the room, there were two cream couches with dark wooden legs in front of a fireplace on the far wall. The fireplace went to the ceiling and was made up of light brown brick. On either side of the fireplace were two large bookshelves that stretched to the ends of each side.

They were already covered in books and pieces of art, but she knew a few more items could fit on the shelves and they wouldn’t be too crowded.

Under the couches in front of the fire was a large sage green rug with golden vines woven into it. There were also a few paintings on the walls depicting gardens or animals.

Closer to where she first entered the large room was a large four-poster bed with more sage green strips of sheer material covering the dark wooden frame. The bedding was cream with golden accents on some of the pillows.

On the same wall as the door there were two large armoires but she wasn’t sure if they were full. It was another thing she would explore later if she was bored. At that moment, she was feeling fatigued from traveling.

Overall, she found the place to be very peaceful looking. Although it felt like far too much for her to enjoy by herself.

Her entire life she lacked friends. She couldn’t even form a bond with her sister who chose the path of most resistance with her. She knew she should have gotten used to being alone. However, being somewhere so beautiful and not being able to share it with someone made the sting of loneliness hurt a little bit worse.

In an ideal world, she would have the companionship of Valerio. Even the friendship of Quinn or King Stephano would be nice, but none of their lives were compatible with hers any longer.

Leonor started to slump, feeling dejected about the loneliness she was likely going to face in a place like that.

However, she heard a maid knock at the door and she straightened her posture. A few of them scurried in to start a bath for her in the bathroom connected to the room near her bed.

They were fast and polite. Having so many people around would make someone think she wasn’t alone, but they talked to her with clear resistance to anything but a master and worker relationship.

"Right this way, your grace," one of them said.

"Would you like us to help you?" another chimed in.

She wasn’t used to the pampering but it would help fill her head with something else.

Leonor politely accepted their request and was given a luxurious bath in a silver tub with extremely warm water that soothed her to her core. Luckily, the oils used there weren’t as ridiculously potent with floral scents the way they were in the other places she had stayed. It wasn’t her preference to be smelled from miles away.

The maids couldn’t have been much older than Leonor. Their bubbly personalities and chattiness while helping her bathe were indicative of how young they were.

"My lady, you have such beautiful skin," one of them complimented her.

"And your dark hair paired with blue eyes," another gushed. "It’s no wonder his grace sought you out so aggressively."

One of the maids nudged the girl who said that, warning her she was saying a little bit too much.

Somehow Leonor kept a pleasant smile on her face the entire time, but she felt terrible that this image of the duke cherishing her was all in their heads. He might have sought her out aggressively and protected her on the journey there, but he wanted nothing more from her except a wife to fill in an empty position.

It was only making her long for a life full of love that much more.

When she was finished with her bath and given a beautiful light yellow nightgown and robe, food was brought to her on a tray and set down on the table between the two couches near the fire. She was also brought a pot of tea that was supposed to help her go to sleep. They said being in such an unfamiliar place would be hard to sleep in.

Soon after she tucked herself into bed and gazed towards the large windows.

They were right. It was hard to sleep in an unfamiliar place.

As always, she clasped her locket in her hands and the light blue mana she released seeped into it.

All she could look forward to was exploring her new home in the upcoming days.
