Chapter 61: Felix’s Past; Dark Forest

It happened to be that Lucas had been inside that same dark room before Felix.

He had also gotten caught trying to run away and asking other children for help. He was also pushed inside the same way, but Lucas was more active than Felix since he did not get beaten up.

Lucas had been very attentive and immediately had caught the situation. He had cornered himself and sat in a corner in silence, trying his best not to even let his breathing make a sound.

His attempts saved him.

That person inside who Lucas didn’t catch the sight of, lost track of him and eventually forgot someone was there.

It became that easy for Lucas to protect himself for the time being.

Then, Felix was pushed there.

Unfortunately for him, it didn’t end well.

Felix was nervous, groaning in pain and his heavy breathing could reach the ears of Lucas who was in a far away corner of the room.

Lucas had to witness what Felix had to go through. Even though he didn’t see it, he knew what that person, a woman, was doing from the way she was talking, panting and moaning.

Lucas was trying his best not to make a sound because he feared he would also have the same fate if he were to get caught.

Lucas was eventually getting very nervous too. He became impatient and he wanted to escape there as soon as possible. But he couldn’t find or think of a way that would not put him in more trouble.

When he realised everything went silent, he gathered his courage to check on Felix. Even though he didn’t want to get caught, he was worried about the stranger. But he still didn’t move and it was just a thought for the moment.

Maybe he could get some help to escape there if he tagged along with this other child. But he wanted to find a way to at least approach him. It was all dark and one mistake, he might get caught.

However, soon he got the chance.

The timing was just perfect to escalate his plan.

A henchman of the counts came to pick them up again.

Lucas didn’t know if that was a new guy. He just stepped inside with no caution and was shouting for Felix. One thing Lucas noticed was the man that threw him into the room was quick with his actions and made no sound. He immediately closed the door, not letting the outside light fall on the room for long, pulling Lucas into the deep darkness.

However, this guy was different.

He didn’t seem to be scared of the woman...

Or...he had no idea.

The next thing Lucas heard was bloody screams and the woman cursing. The door wasn’t closed so Lucas could see well as it was not dark anymore.

He saw that woman was attacking that man.

The woman...

She looked absolutely horrifying. Long dirty hair, pale skin, a white nightgown that seemed to have lost its pieces with time. She had a crazy look on her eyes as she jumped on the man, biting on his arm, blood oozing out.

It would be unfair to say he wasn’t scared.

It was also why he was in a rush to run away now.

When she let go of that man, he thought he or that stranger would be her next target.

The man screamed again and Lucas took the chance to run to the door while the woman was focused on the man.

He turned to look at unconscious Felix on the ground, hesitating.

Should he grab him too?

Or leave him there?

Felix was unconscious at that time. Lucas was not enough to carry him. Felix would definitely slow him down and both of them might be in trouble.

But in the end, Lucas decided to take the risk against the odds.

Lucas literally dragged Felix from his legs on the ground. He had no other way and this was the easiest and fastest way. Even though Felix got a big bruise on his back later, they were safe in the end anyway.

It was quite surprising when Lucas was prepared to do something to fight off anyone getting in the way but there was no one to guard those backdoors. Lucas did later brag how easy it was to escape from there, only after he confirmed Felix would take a joke.

Felix was always awkward with strangers and seeing Lucas’s shiny and talkative behaviour, he felt even more awkward. But Felix thanked him later, despite wanting to completely shut down.

They were apparently held in a half built building, in the middle of a forest.

Lucas had seen the sight of it as he looked back on his way to run away from there.

Lucas was paying a lot of attention and very focused on his goal. He wanted to hide somewhere safe for the time being, then step outside of there after he confirms no one would come looking for them.

So, that big tree hollow was the best place.

Thankfully, it didn’t seem like it was in use by any animal to shelter.

Or else they would end up becoming a feast for some wild animal.

Lucas pushed Felix inside first, then went to erase the marks of his ’crime’.

The grass had got flattened all the way where he had been dragging Felix on the ground. With quick actions, he stomped on more grass around that area, making a big mess to the point it seemed like it had always been messed up like that.

It didn’t take much time before he got satisfied and felt safe that he ran to where Felix was, joining him and trying to cover up the entrance with big fluffed and dried pile of leaves before settling comfortably inside.

Satisfied with the efforts, he waited for Felix to wake up next.

Lucas was very confident he could escape this time. And since he is not alone, it made him feel more reassured. And also a little proud that he saved someone else too.

Lucas really believed those people wouldn’t just let them go. But for a very long time, no one came looking for them.

They were not very far and Lucas was sure they would go past where they were to look for them since they must already know they have run away.

But...

No one came looking for them.

When Felix finally gained consciousness, Lucas couldn’t help but cry as he was feeling very scared and nervous if he was really doing it the right way.

It was good he dragged Felix with him.

Or else he would be very lonely and discouraged.

Lucas and Felix got to know each other, silently following Lucas’s plan to step out after around a day and find a way to exit the forest.

One night, another day, then another night...

They stayed inside the huge tree, actually starving but not daring to go outside.

Lucas kept delaying going outside because he wasn’t sure. But they couldn’t do it anymore because they weren’t getting any water and food.

So they finally decided to take action and continue going in the opposite direction as they wanted to get away from the kidnappers.

Even if it will be very very far away, there will be an end to the forest. And...he just wished there would be no wild animals that they can’t handle.

They were so desperate to escape from this mess that they were ready to face anything else other than those kidnappers.

As they created a significant gap between, they finally slowed down and took a rest.

Lucas and Felix sat by the river, drinking water and picking all kinds of fruits to ease their hunger.

There, Lucas shared his story as he felt awkward since Felix was always silent and just following along with him.

So, Lucas was a beggar that wandered around begging for food. He had no one. Literally, no one...

Apparently, He didn’t even know who his parents were. He raised himself when he finally started to understand life.

Then, he was fooled by the sight of food and was kidnapped like this.

Felix felt kind of shaken that Lucas was complaining he didn’t even get the food they fooled him with. He was laughing about it and Felix didn’t know if he was seriously finding it funny saying it out, trying to make the atmosphere calm.

Felix felt sorry for Lucas.

He must have been desperate for food.

He never had such a hard life.

He only lacked attention.

Lucas seemed to have lacked almost everything.

Felix also eventually opened up during those times, finally talking.

Their days of walking finally were worth it.

They reached the end of the forest with no problems blocking their way.

The next challenge came when they found themselves in an unknown city, quite nervous to be around people again.

However, thanks to Felix, they soon found where they were.

Felix had travelled around with his father and he knew they were in their neighbouring city upon seeing the surrounding, which was apparently separated from their city with the little forest called ’dark forest.’

Even though his memory wasn’t very clear, some things did make him recall those times when he travelled around this town. He had always loved to go around with his father.

It’s their luck they ended up reaching the town not somewhere else in the city.

Because, Felix only knew about the town.

Now thinking about the places, so...they were in the dark forest all this time?
