Chapter 162: Chapter 162: It’s None of Anyone’s Business Once I Join
The homeroom teacher didn’t stop everyone’s discussion, and a few minutes later he asked, "The sports committee has the list of events for the sports festival. Anyone who wants to participate in an event can sign up. It’s not about the results, but the participation that matters."
"What’s there to participate in? Every time at the sports festival, our class is the last one. I’m not going to embarrass myself."
A boy sitting in the front row said, wearing glasses and with a rather delicate appearance, but clearly the type who was not good at sports and had a strong sense of pride.
No sooner had he spoken than other students echoed his sentiments, refusing to participate and even suggesting that instead of joining the sports festival, it would be more fun for everyone to go for a KTV party.
Tang Ming listened to these students and couldn’t help but snort in contempt. Not only were they poor in their studies, but their physical abilities were terribly lacking as well. He really wondered what their privileged family backgrounds had given them.
"Ming, don’t count on those losers from our class; you might as well participate and at least try to win some honor for our class."
The chubby boy’s deskmate was also a homebody type, who usually read novels in class and played computer games at home. Seeing that there were no strong athletes in the class, he thought of getting Tang Ming to join.
Before he could finish, the homeroom teacher had already started shaking his head at the podium. He had hoped that his students would treasure their last collective event and participate wholeheartedly, but now it seemed they were not only lacking in sports talent but were also too proud to face losing.
However, when the homeroom teacher’s gaze reached the back row and suddenly found a pearl in the sea, upon looking at Tang Ming, he became a bit excited.
He had seen Tang Ming play basketball before; an athlete like that must be good in other sports events too, right?
If Tang Ming took the lead, maybe the rest of the class would be more willing to sign up as well.
"Tang Ming, why don’t you take the lead and inspire everyone’s enthusiasm?"
The homeroom teacher looked at Tang Ming, hoping he would agree.
"Exactly, Tang Ming’s basketball skills are so good. There’s definitely no problem with him participating in the sports festival."
A girl in the front row started egging him on.
"Yeah, even the PE teacher said Tang Ming has a talent for sports. If he’s participating, then it doesn’t matter if I sign up just for fun. With someone bringing honor to our class, we won’t lose face even if we lose."
Another boy joined in.
Seeing the students’ enthusiasm stirred up, the homeroom teacher said to Tang Ming:
"Tang Ming, this is our last sports festival. You wouldn’t want to have any regrets, right? Although you transferred here midway, you are still a part of our class. Please take the lead."
At that moment, Li Xiaoli also turned her head from the front row to persuade Tang Ming, "Brother Tang Ming, please participate in the sports festival. I have faith in you."
But Tang Ming just shook his head and said:
"I better not participate. If I do, then no one else will have anything to do. How would that be fun? Better to let others have a chance."
Li Xiaoli blinked and said with a smile, "You know, Meng Ting likes guys who are good at sports."
"What does that have to do with me?"
Tang Ming thought to himself: He was planning to break off an engagement, so if Liu Mengting were to like him, would the engagement still be called off?
"Classmates, this is our last sports festival—at least during high school, there won’t be another. So, I believe no one wants to have any regrets."
The homeroom teacher continued to encourage the students to take part in the sports festival.
The chubby boy also gave Tang Ming a meaningful look, and Tang Ming asked frowning, "What are you doing?"
"Ming, I want to participate too. Why don’t you take me with you? I don’t care about winning; finishing would be enough."
The chubby boy said, visibly moved by the homeroom teacher’s words. Having spent three years in high school with nothing academic to show for it, he couldn’t just go through it all without taking part in any collective activities.
Influenced by Tang Ming over the past couple of months, the chubby boy had become much more confident than before.
Tang Ming thought for a moment and said, "Alright, then I’ll participate."
"Great, Ming has decided to join the sports festival."
The chubby boy yelled towards the sports committee members in the front rows:
"Wang Sanyuan, quickly write Ming in for all the events no one else has signed up for."
The sports committee member was originally one of the more standout athletes in class five, but ever since Tang Ming shone on the basketball court, his limelight had been completely overshadowed, so now he muttered resentfully, "Stupid chubby, what are you shouting for? It’s not like you’re participating, acting as if you’re all that."
"Wang Sanyuan, what are you muttering about?"
The chubby boy, ever since following Tang Ming, had grown a lot bolder, at least within his own class, where many who used to bully him now dare not even look at him the wrong way.
"Nothing. Zhou Youfu, what events are you going to participate in?"
Though Wang Sanyuan was narrow-minded, he knew better than to provoke the relationship between the chubby boy and Tang Ming.
"Me? I’ll do the 100-meter dash. With Ming leading the way, I just need to finish."
The chubby boy said enthusiastically.
"Brown noser."
Wang Sanyuan scorned in his heart but then he bent his head down to write the names.
With Tang Ming and the chubby boy signed up, more and more classmates began to register, taking the sports festival as an occasion for fun and not worrying too much about winning. If they won, it would be great; if not, it wouldn’t matter.
Li Xiaoli and Liu Mengting were also encouraging everyone. After all, it was the last time, and if they were going to be embarrassed, so be it. If they were to grow older and regret not participating, that would truly be a disservice to their lives.
With the encouragement from the two beauties, especially Li Xiaoli’s comment about Liu Mengting liking guys who are good at sports, these boys were very enthusiastic, each vying to show their face in the last sports festival.
The homeroom teacher was delighted to see the large turnout and stepped down from the podium to check the list with sports committee member Wang Sanyuan. Yet, some particularly difficult or challenging events remained empty with no participants.
While many signed up impulsively, most chose easier events like the long and short runs, similar to the chubby boy. As for more challenging events like the long jump or high jump, still no one was willing to participate.
After some thought, the homeroom teacher added Tang Ming’s name to them. Counting carefully, Tang Ming had signed up for seven or eight events, which made him a true all-rounder.
"Isn’t Tang Ming signed up for too many events?"
Wang Sanyuan was only signed up for four or five events and now felt outdone by Tang Ming, which made him quite upset.
The homeroom teacher chuckled and said, "This is called the capable shouldering more tasks. Sanyuan, as a sports committee member, why not participate in a few more?"
"No thanks, I want to conserve my strength to try for a place in the short-distance running and high jump."
Wang Sanyuan shook his head and said.
