"I must not suffer the slightest harm!" She continued to demand.

"I won’t let a hair on your head be harmed!" He assured firmly.

"Are you serious?"

"One hundred percent!" Qin Muchuan was confident.

Lin Xiangwan realized that she couldn’t let him remain shirtless, especially if there were wolves around, he couldn’t be improperly dressed, could he?

If he were to be clawed by a wolf, or bitten by a dog, it would be gory!

For her husband’s safety, and to prevent any mishaps, or at least to spare him the embarrassment in case of accidents, she stepped away so he could get dressed.

Given the chance to cover up, Qin Muchuan quickly picked up his clothes from the ground. He moved with such lightness that even standing next to him, she could barely hear a sound.

Lin Xiangwan marveled at his poise. She guessed this must be the result of years of training.

Once Qin Muchuan had finished dressing, he took Lin Xiangwan and stood beside a large tree, using it to shield their bodies.

There seemed to be some movements which were drawing closer and the sound of footsteps was quite clear now.

However, Lin Xiangwan couldn’t tell what was approaching.

"What?" Lin Xiangwan asked anxiously.

She was too tense. She could hear her heart pounding.

She didn’t even dare to take deep breaths for fear of attracting any creatures.

Qin Muchuan continued to whisper in her ear. "The footsteps are very light, probably not a wild dog. Dogs usually stomp heavily and are much faster."

Not a wild dog, then could it be something more formidable, like a wolf? "Could it really be a big, bad wolf?"

"..." Qin Muchuan didn’t respond immediately, taking a moment to contemplate and then finally conceding, "We can’t rule out the possibility!"

Lin Xiangwan was so frightened, her tears were about to fall. "But why have I never heard about wolves on this mountain in all these years? I didn’t hear any such stories when I was a child!"

"When you were young, the ecosystem was heavily disrupted, so all the dangerous animals had disappeared. But now the government has significantly increased its environmental protection measures. And what about your family, is there someone who can take care of them? I don’t have any relatives left, I only have you, only you..."

Qin Muchuan was pleased with her protectiveness, and even amused. Could his wife be any more adorable? Her fear was surely overblown, wasn’t it?

And she was far too gullible.

These days, the mountains were barren with businesses developing tourism attractions all over, and hordes of visitors flocking every day. If there were wolves, they would have been scared away a long time ago, wouldn’t they?

Could wolves really emerge to scare people at night?

Qin Muchuan consoled Lin Xiangwan, patting her back for reassurance. "Don’t worry. Tongtong and Ranran are very smart, and I have already saved a large amount for them in their funds. Even without us, they will live a good life."

He always planned for the future, not because he was overly traditional or spoiling of the children.

He had already saved a large amount of money for Ranran and Tongtong. They would withdraw some for college, then some for their weddings, then some more when they had children, in addition to their start-up funds.

If you let me die, I won’t let you off even in my next life. I’ll haunt you forever!" She threatened fiercely.

Qin Muchuan laughed and kissed her cheek. "Don’t worry, I don’t want to die so soon either. My wife is young and beautiful, with an excellent figure, and is absolutely devoted to me. How could I give up so easily? I’ll keep fighting to live and love my wife..."

"Hehe..." Lin Xiangwan chuckled at his praise. "You certainly have a way with words. But what do we do now?"

Qin Muchuan reached to hold the hand on his collar, and said with feigned sadness, "You should let me go now. Otherwise, I’ll be strangled by you, even before a wolf gets the chance!"

It was then that Lin Xiangwan noticed and let him go, checking his face anxiously. "Are you okay? Did I tighten it too much?"

Qin Muchuan waved her off. "I’m fine."

As he spoke, he bent down and picked up a stick from the ground.

The stick was fairly thick and long. Holding it gave it a certain weight.

He handed it to her. "Hold this. When I tell you to hit, hit with all your might. Got it?"

Lin Xiangwan gratefully took it. It was quite heavy. "Okay!"

In her heart, she knew that facing a crisis meant hands-on teamwork between husband and wife.

Just then, the footsteps that had been approaching began to recede. Qin Muchuan suddenly took another branch and swung at the tree, making a noise.

The footfalls abruptly shifted towards them, growing more insistent...
