Chapter 381: 386 Wanwan’s College Story_1

"Your flirting skills are pretty good. Every time you do it, you captivate me and fill my mind entirely with you!"

"Ahem..." She didn’t want to continue the conversation on that topic and wrinkled her nose. "Will you let me continue my story?"

"OK, go ahead!" Qin Muchuan gestured.

"Where did I stop?" Lin Xiangwan was momentarily lost for words as she could not recall where she had left off.

Qin Muchuan pressed his cigarette into the ashtray and extinguished it. He glanced at her and said, "You were saying that the boy from the countryside had a very simple village girlfriend."

"Yes, I was. But the girl was quite honest, she wasn’t manipulative. Cough, why do I keep using these words? Anyway, the easy-going girl used to always go watch the boy play sports, and then mess around with him, splashing him with water or getting him to fetch water for her, or tricking him into getting her food!"

Qin Muchuan disagreed slightly. "Didn’t you say that the boy’s family was very poor? If she was cheating him, wouldn’t he just run away?"

"You see, ordinary people think like that, right? But do you know? Men are naturally susceptible to being taken advantage of. His good old village girlfriend never asked him to buy stuff. Whenever there was water to be fetched, we would go together, never burdening the boy with anything. Yet, the apparently laid-back girl stole him away." Lin Xiangwan said, growing noticeably agitated as she spoke.

It was certainly an infuriating matter!

"And then?" Qin Muchuan asked, trying to follow her train of thought. "Did the boy give the job of being a campus instructor to the girl?"

Lin Xiangwan nodded vigorously. "Indeed, you’re correct! That boy was totally led astray by her."

Qin Muchuan had a different opinion. "Since they loved each other and wanted to be together, the boy giving the position of the instructor to the girl isn’t so bad, in my opinion. I think stable jobs are more suitable for women, and starting businesses is more suitable for men. A man can’t possibly spend his entire life in the ranks of university staff, right?"

Lin Xiangwan snorted. "Do you think the girl would marry the boy? Don’t forget how poor his family is!"

"Of course not!" Lin Xiangwan said angrily. "That girl swindled the boy and took the job he had. The second day after signing the contract, she said her goodbyes to the boy!"

Qin Muchuan shook his head. "That woman is too pragmatic. To think she would do all that just for the job of an instructor, I reckon it’s not worth it, the reward is too low!"

Lin Xiangwan twisted her mouth in disapproval. "Do you think everyone has the opportunity to latch onto a rich person? If they can’t find a rich person, they think any small profit is worth the effort! Moreover, the girl is pretty good. In her first year as a campus supervisor, she managed to get in with the school secretary. Before long, she got close to departmental director and landed the position of Principal’s Secretary. Now, despite being around my age, she’s secured a job at the Education Bureau! And from what I’ve heard, she’s got a pretty high position, even a division level post!"

Lin Xiangwan sighed at herself. "As for me, I’m still not accomplished at anything!"

"What happened to the boy?" Qin Muchuan asked, quite interested.

Lin Xiangwan shook her head, clearly regretful. "I told you, the girl made a fool out of him. The boy’s family lived in a poor village in a poverty-stricken county. They were extremely poor, and he also had a disabled older brother. His brother had high-level paraplegia and couldn’t get married. He needed constant medication. The boy being able to attend university was all down to his parents farming and working hard; a small portion was because he held a part-time job. They had hoped that he would secure a stable job and send some money home. But finding a job isn’t easy for fresh graduates. Especially in B City, where rents are exorbitant, and coupled with the low starting wages for recent graduates. The cost of living, rent, utilities, phone bills, these all pile up and often exceed the monthly salary. If his family were just a bit wealthier and could help him out for a year or two, I believe he could have survived in B City. But his family was really poor, and then his father fell ill. His mother had two patients to care for at home and couldn’t work. So, they asked him to return home, telling him they had found a job for him as a teacher in a middle school. Being a middle school teacher is equivalent to a civil servant job! After being dumped by the girl, he must’ve been really hurt, right? And then he returned to the countryside."

"Ah, that’s a bit of a pity. A B University graduate working in a rural middle school. He should have gotten a job in a county office at the very least," Qin Muchuan said, sharing in her regret.

"Get into a county office? Do you think it’s easy to get into a county office?" Lin Xiangwan asked loudly in response.

Qin Muchuan seemed puzzled by her question. "Is it such a reach for a B University graduate to get a job in a poor county office after graduation?"

Lin Xiangwan nodded, repeating the action. "What do you think? It’s a serious struggle! Since your family holds power, a simple word from you could get a job in B City, let alone in a county office. You know, these county offices are filled with uneducated people, all corrupt officials who got their positions through bribes. Their certificates are fake. Did you know, people are so capable of faking degrees they even get ones from Harvard and MIT, can you imagine how fake these are!"

Qin Muchuan was indeed amused by this revelation. "There are people with such high fake degrees?"

Lin Xiangwan nodded vigorously. "Yes, it’s true, very true! Because Qianqian’s uncle works in their local county government, and he has a fake degree from Stanford!"

Qin Muchuan couldn’t help but laugh out loud. "She told you guys this?"

Lin Xiangwan shrugged. "According to Qianqian, it’s a well-known secret where they come from. There’s nothing to hide. No one investigates or exposes it anyway. Even if the public did expose it, it’d be in vain. So, there’s nothing to keep secret!"

"The situation at the grassroots level is indeed quite chaotic!"

Lin Xiangwan nodded her agreement, returning to the main topic. "So, the high degree that my classmate has would cause envy in the county office. If he were to go there, wouldn’t he be potentially taking their jobs? So, those with high degrees looking to return to their hometown have no place in their offices. The county placing him in a rural middle school is already them showing significant consideration."

"A pinch and a stroke. Even if he becomes a school principal, there’s still room for development! No matter how they end, as long as he has the ability, he’ll be able to achieve something!!" Qin Muchuan said.
